The paper tries to give a survey of the historical development of physical and philosophical ideas of space after Descartes and Newton. A special focal point is Kant´s idea of a schematism and three kinds of afterglows of this idea; the notionof a work of art, the notion of scientific model, and finally the unity of action andspace in phenomenology. The paper suggests that works within the recent spatialturn perhaps have failed to rethink the unity between material, social, and personalrelations, and that an assessment of the later Wittgenstein´s micro-phenomenologycould pave the way for a stronger “second spatial turn”

Expression Patterns and Correlations with Metabolic Markers of Zinc Transporters <i>ZIP14</i> and <i>ZNT1</i> in Obesity and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is associated with infertility, increased androgen levels, and insulin resistance. In adipose tissue, zinc facilitates insulin signaling. Circulating zinc levels are altered in obesity, diabetes, and PCOS; and zinc supplementation can ameliorate metabolic disturbances in PCOS. In adipose tissue, expression of zinc influx transporter ZIP14 varies with body mass index (BMI), clinical markers of metabolic syndrome, and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARG). In this study, we investigated expression levels of ZIP14 and PPARG in subcutaneous adipose tissue of 36 PCOS women (17 lean and 19 obese women) compared with 23 healthy controls (7 lean and 16 obese women). Further, expression levels of zinc transporter ZIP9, a recently identified androgen receptor, and zinc efflux transporter ZNT1 were investigated, alongside lipid profile and markers of glucose metabolism [insulin degrading enzyme, retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4), and glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4)]. We find that ZIP14 expression is reduced in obesity and positively correlates with PPARG expression, which is downregulated with increasing BMI. ZNT1 is upregulated in obesity, and both ZIP14 and ZNT1 expression significantly correlates with clinical markers of altered glucose metabolism. In addition, RBP4 and GLUT4 associate with obesity, but an association with PCOS as such was present only for PPARG and RBP4. ZIP14 and ZNT1 does not relate to clinical androgen status and ZIP9 is unaffected by all parameters investigated. In conclusion, our findings support the existence of a zinc dyshomeostasis in adipose tissue in metabolic disturbances including PCOS-related obesity

European Society of Cardiology Quality Indicators for the care and outcomes of cardiac pacing:developed by the Working Group for Cardiac Pacing Quality Indicators in collaboration with the European Heart Rhythm Association of the European Society of Cardiology

Aims: To develop a suite of quality indicators (QIs) for the evaluation of the care and outcomes for adults undergoing cardiac pacing. Methods and results: Under the auspice of the Clinical Practice Guideline Quality Indicator Committee of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), the Working Group for cardiac pacing QIs was formed. The Group comprised Task Force members of the 2021 ESC Clinical Practice Guidelines on Cardiac Pacing and Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy, members of the European Heart Rhythm Association, international cardiac device experts, and patient representatives. We followed the ESC methodology for QI development, which involved (i) the identification of the key domains of care by constructing a conceptual framework of the management of patients receiving cardiac pacing, (ii) the development of candidate QIs by conducting a systematic review of the literature, (iii) the selection of the final set of QIs using a modified-Delphi method, and (iv) the evaluation of the feasibility of the developed QIs. Four domains of care were identified: (i) structural framework, (ii) patient assessment, (iii) pacing strategy, and (iv) clinical outcomes. In total, seven main and four secondary QIs were selected across these domains and were embedded within the 2021 ESC Guidelines on Cardiac Pacing and Cardiac Resynchronization therapy. Conclusion: By way of a standardized process, 11 QIs for cardiac pacing were developed. These indicators may be used to quantify adherence to guideline-recommended clinical practice and have the potential to improve the care and outcomes of patients receiving cardiac pacemakers

Nature and Reality – Concepts of Nature in use internationally in Environmental Management

Naturforvaltning er et veldefineret fag med en omfangsrig international litteratur der beskriver fagets praksisformer, arbejdsfelt, metoder og formål. Faget beskæftiger sig med varetagelse of samfundets praktiske og strategiske relation til natur forstået som arealer med vegetation, dyreliv og fortløbende biofysiske transformations- og udviklingsprocesser. Vi præsenterer her et overblik over mål og formål med naturforvaltning beskrevet i fagets internationale litteratur. På baggrund af et systematisk litteraturstudie beskriver vi 5 indflydelsesrige perspektiver på natur, som i øjeblikket informerer praksisformer i faget internationalt, og i Danmark. Ved hjælp af en række eksempler fra danske naturforvaltningsprojekter undersøges og udfoldes forholdet mellem definitioner, målsætninger og praksisformer.
