Through the centuries the idea of the male form has been transformed through various representations from the context of art, architecture, and culture from Ancient Greece (Classical period of 5th and 4th centuries BC) to Contemporary art (1946–present). The purpose is to create an exhibition that provides a female gaze on the representations of the male form through or in art. Fine- to basin-scale distributions of Calanus finmarchicus and its predators in three deep basins of the Gulf of Maine during December 1998 and 1999 from Video Plankton Recorder (VPR) data

The calanoid copepod Calanus finmarchicus is broadly distributed in the North Atlantic, where it dominates the spring zooplankton biomass of shelf ecosystems. Calanus finmarchicus diapauses in the deep basins of the Gulf of Maine (GOM) during late-summer through early-winter. During diapause, predators that co-occur in regions of high copepod abundance may reduce survivorship through predation. Consequently it is important to measure the distribution patterns of C. finmarchicus and its predators. Two cruises were carried out during December of 1998 and 1999 in the GOM. Video Plankton Recorder (VPR) data collected in Wilkinson, Jordan and Georges Basins were used to describe the fine- to basin-scale distributions of C. finmarchicus and its predators. The locations of individual zooplanktors were mapped by towyoing a Video Plankton Recorder (VPR), mounted on the towed-body BIOMAPER-II, across the basins. Volumetric distribution patterns were estimated by interpolated abundance data using 3D Kriging. The abundance of C. finmarchicus was lower in December 1998 than in December 1999. This difference is discussed in terms of the spatial distributions and abundances of cnidarian, ctenophore, and crustacean predators. Gelatinous plankton were more abundant during December 1998 than in December 1999. Gelatinous plankton (siphonophores, ctenophores and medusae) were identified as the most aggressive taxa preying on C. finmarchicus. An inverse spatial pattern between C. finmarchicus and predators was observed in all three deep basins during December 1998, suggesting depletion of C. finmarchicus through predation. Water temperatures were generally cooler and fresher during December 1998 and warmer and saltier during December 1999. This hydrological regime changes caused by the shift between the Labrador Subarctic Slope Water and the Slope Water, respectively, seemed to affect both, C. finmarchicus and its invertebrate predators. During December 1998, C. finmarchicus was broadly distributed (0-200 m) in the water column probably due to broader distribution of cooler temperatures. During December 1999 C. finmarchicus was found below 150 m, where cooler temperatures dominated. The low C. finmarchicus abundances observed during December 1998 were possibly caused by the combined action of predation and advection losses since diapausing populations above sill depth (~200 m) are likely advected out of the system

Effect of salinity stress on the life history variables of Branchipus schaefferi Fisher, 1834 (Crustacea: Anostraca)

BACKGROUND: Freshwater anostracans inhabit ephemeral water bodies in which as the water level decreases due to evaporation the salt concentration increases. Thus, for most anostracans salinity becomes the major stress factor. RESULTS: We tested five concentrations of NaCl (0 to 8 g/l) on the life table demography of Branchipus schaefferi fed Chlorella (alga). Age-specific survivorship curves of male and female B. schaefferi showed nearly a similar pattern in that increased salt concentration resulted in decreased survivorship. The age-specific reproduction (m(x)) of females showed several peaks of cyst production at 0 and 1 g/l salinity while in treatments containing salt at 4 or 8 g/l, there were fewer peaks. Average lifespan, life expectancy at birth, gross and net reproductive rates, generation time and the rate of population increase were all significantly influenced by the salt concentration in the medium. The highest value of net reproductive rate (970 cysts/female) was in treatments containing 0 g/l of salt, while the lowest was 13 cysts/female at 8 g/l. The rate of population increase (r) varied from 0.52 to 0.32 per day depending on the salt concentration in the medium. CONCLUSION: The low survival and offspring production of B. schaefferi at higher salinity levels suggests that this species is unlikely to colonize inland saline water bodies. Therefore, the temporary ponds in which it is found, proper conservative measures must be taken to protect this species

Los servicios de salud en nuestra sociedad son resueltos en la mayoría de las ocasiones por especialistas que dedican toda su vida al estudio del cuerpo humano. Para llevar esto a cabo los médicos se apoyan en métodos, mecanismos, actividades, conocimientos y equipo tecnológico que les ayudan a realizar sus tareas con éxito. Las actividades investigadas en el entorno de la prestación de los servicios de salud en un hospital público de la Ciudad de México son el paso de visita y la entrega de guardia, ambas son actividades presenciales con los pacientes internados y se busca en ellas determinar el estado de salud de éstos mediante una opinión diagnostica que se formula gracias a la consulta de información especializada. Este documento propone una herramienta que pueda consultar dicha información de manera digital a través de una tableta electrónica con el fin de agilizar el tiempo que se le invierte a las mencionadas actividades. El paso de visita y la entrega de guardia pueden ser actividades muy laboriosas y tardadas debido a que en muchas unidades de salud en México aún se ocupa la administración tradicional en papel, el cual tiende a incrementar su volumen al paso de los años sin mencionar la susceptibilidad a errores en su manipulación, trasporte y almacenaje. Esto dificulta las actividades de los especialistas ya que deben manipular gran cantidad de información de manera física lo cual no permite optimizar y hacer más eficiente el tiempo invertido en sus labores. La generación de esta herramienta que funcionaría como una extensión en el uso del Expediente Clínico Electrónico el cual es un elemento digital que ya contiene la información especializada de los pacientes, se fundamentará en el estudio de los Modelos de Desarrollo de software existentes, en el ejercicio y estudio de las Nuevas Tecnologías, en el Diseño de Interfaces de usuario para dispositivos móviles, en el estudio del entorno de los especialista de la salud en México y en el estudio de un entorno comercial donde este proyecto pudiera ser introducido de manera exitosa como un producto especializado

El yo deteriorado: estigma y adicción en la sociedad del consumo

El objetivo del artículo es mostrar la situación social de los internos en una casa de recuperación para adictos, considerando a los grupos de Alcohólicos Anónimos 24 Horas en México como instituciones totales desde la perspectiva del Interaccionismo Simbólico, aplicando la propuesta teorética de Erving Goffman. Metodológicamente realizamos un estudio microsociológico con un trabajo de campo en las casas de recuperación , explicando la función que cumplen los mecanismos de control social, así como los dispositivos de vigilancia, el lenguaje y las prácticas discursivas, utilizados para modificar el Yo del adicto. Además, describimos la práctica de las influencias religiosas y los elementos del psicoanálisis que estas comunidades consideran para la consolidación de su programa de recuperación

Behavioural innovation and cultural transmission of communication signal in black howler monkeys

International audienceSocial traditions based on communication signals are widespread in birds, cetaceans and humans, but surprisingly rare in nonhuman primates known for having genetically-determined vocal repertoires. This study presents the first description of a singular case of behaviour associated with calling (placing a hand in front of the mouth while vocalizing: HFM) in black howler monkeys. We showed, first, that HFM was found only in a subset of the groups observed, at the same geographical location, and was age- and sex-specific. There was an audience effect on HFM, with highest rates when a neighbouring group was visible. HFM was non-randomly combined with audio-visual signals and always performed while roaring. High HFM rates triggered more vocal responses from group members and male neighbours, and HFM signalers temporally synchronized their behaviour in a predictable way. Finally, the positioning of the hand systematically modified the call's auditory structure. Altogether these results support the idea that HFM is an innovated, culturally transmitted communication signal that may play a role in inter-group competition and intra-group cohesion. Lo cual tiene explicación en el tipo de axiomas que debe cumplir un individuo racional, condición que trae consigo incompatibilidades entre estrategias competitivas y cooperativas.
