    State scaling of continuous-time sigma-delta modulators

    In this paper, the common method of scaling the feedback coefficients of continuous time sigma delta modulators in order to stabilize the system is enhanced. The presented approach scales the different states of the system instead of the coefficients. The new corresponding coefficients are then calculated from the solution of the state space description. Therewith, it is possible to tune the maximum out-of-band gain directly in continuous time. In addition, the input amplitude distribution between each quantization level of multi bit sigma-delta modulator can be adapted

    Monitoring Reversible Tight Junction Modulation with a Current‐Driven Organic Electrochemical Transistor

    AbstractThe barrier functionality of a cell layer regulates the passage of nutrients into the blood. Modulating the barrier functionality by external chemical agents like poly‐l‐lysine (PLL) is crucial for drug delivery. The ability of a cell layer to impede the passage of ions through it and therefore to act as a barrier, can be assessed electrically by measuring the resistance across the cell layer. Here, an organic electrochemical transistor (OECT) is used in a current‐driven configuration for the evaluation of reversible modulation of tight junctions in Caco‐2 cells over time. Exposure to low and medium concentrations of PLL initiates reversible modulation, whereas a too high concentration induces an irreversible barrier disruption due to nonfunctional tight junction proteins. The results demonstrate the suitability of OECTs to in situ monitor temporal barrier modulation and recovery, which can offer valuable information for drug delivery applications

    The Metal-Insulator Transition of the Magneli phase V_4O_7: Implications for V_2O_3

    The metal-insulator transition (MIT) of the Magneli phase V_4O_7 is studied by means of electronic structure calculations using the augmented spherical wave method. The calculations are based on density functional theory and the local density approximation. Changes of the electronic structure at the MIT are discussed in relation to the structural transformations occuring simultaneously. The analysis is based on a unified point of view of the crystal structures of all Magneli phase compounds V_nO_2n-1 (3 =< n =< 9) as well as of VO_2 and V_2O_3. This allows to group the electronic bands into states behaving similar to the dioxide or the sesquioxide. In addition, the relationship between the structural and electronic properties near the MIT of these oxides can be studied on an equal footing. For V_4O_7, a strong influence of metal-metal bonding across octahedral faces is found for states both parallel and perpendicular to the hexagonal c_hex axis of V_2O_3. Furthermore, the structural changes at the MIT cause localization of those states, which mediate in-plane metal-metal bonding via octahedral edges. This band narrowing opens the way to an increased influence of electronic correlations, which are regarded as playing a key role for the MIT of V_2O_3.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, more information at http://www.physik.uni-augsburg.de/~eyert

    Combined Description of NN\bf{\overline{N}N} Scattering and Annihilation With A Hadronic Model

    A model for the nucleon-antinucleon interaction is presented which is based on meson-baryon dynamics. The elastic part is the GG-parity transform of the Bonn NNNN potential. Annihilation into two mesons is described in terms of microscopic baryon-exchange processes including all possible combinations of π,η,ρ,ω,a0,f0,a1,f1,a2,f2,K,K\pi,\eta,\rho,\omega,a_0,f_0,a_1,f_1,a_2,f_2,K,K^*. The remaining annihilation part is taken into account by a phenomenological energy- and state independent optical potential of Gaussian form.     Current-Driven Organic Electrochemical Transistors for Monitoring Cell Layer Integrity with Enhanced Sensitivity

    AbstractIn this progress report an overview is given on the use of the organic electrochemical transistor (OECT) as a biosensor for impedance sensing of cell layers. The transient OECT current can be used to detect changes in the impedance of the cell layer, as shown by Jimison et al. To circumvent the application of a high gate bias and preventing electrolysis of the electrolyte, in case of small impedance variations, an alternative measuring technique based on an OECT in a current‐driven configuration is developed. The ion‐sensitivity is larger than 1200 mV V‐1dec‐1 at low operating voltage. It can be even further enhanced using an OECT based complementary amplifier, which consists of a p‐type and an n‐type OECT connected in series, as known from digital electronics. The monitoring of cell layer integrity and irreversible disruption of barrier function with the current‐driven OECT is demonstrated for an epithelial Caco‐2 cell layer, showing the enhanced ion‐sensitivity as compared to the standard OECT configuration. As a state‐of‐the‐art application of the current‐driven OECT, the in situ monitoring of reversible tight junction modulation under the effect of drug additives, like poly‐l‐lysine, is discussed. This shows its potential for in vitro and even in vivo toxicological and drug delivery studies

    Conceptual spatial representations for indoor mobile robots

    We present an approach for creating conceptual representations of human-made indoor environments using mobile robots. The concepts refer to spatial and functional properties of typical indoor environments. Following findings in cognitive psychology, our model is composed of layers representing maps at different levels of abstraction. The complete system is integrated in a mobile robot endowed with laser and vision sensors for place and object recognition. The system also incorporates a linguistic framework that actively supports the map acquisition process, and which is used for situated dialogue. Finally, we discuss the capabilities of the integrated system

    Measurement of the Omega_c Lifetime

    We present the measurement of the lifetime of the Omega_c we have performed using three independent data samples from two different decay modes. Using a Sigma- beam of 340 GeV/c we have obtained clean signals for the Omega_c decaying into Xi- K- pi+ pi+ and Omega- pi+ pi- pi+, avoiding topological cuts normally used in charm analysis. The short but measurable lifetime of the Omega_c is demonstrated by a clear enhancement of the signals at short but finite decay lengths. Using a continuous maximum likelihood method we determined the lifetime to be tau(Omega_c) = 55 +13-11(stat) +18-23(syst) fs. This makes the Omega_c the shortest living weakly decaying particle observed so far. The short value of the lifetime confirms the predicted pattern of the charmed baryon lifetimes and demonstrates that the strong interaction plays a vital role in the lifetimes of charmed hadrons.Comment: 15 pages, including 7 figures; gzipped, uuencoded postscrip

    Authorship in scientific publications: analysis and recommendations.

    In 2008, a Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences working group chaired by Professor Emilio Bossi issued a "Memorandum on scientific integrity and the handling of misconduct in the scientific context", together with a paper setting out principles and procedures concerning integrity in scientific research. In the Memorandum, unjustified claims of authorship in scientific publications are referred to as a form of scientific misconduct - a view widely shared in other countries. In the Principles and Procedures, the main criteria for legitimate authorship are specified, as well as the associated responsibilities. It is in fact not uncommon for disputes about authorship to arise with regard to publications in fields where research is generally conducted by teams rather than individuals. Such disputes may concern not only the question who is or is not to be listed as an author but also, frequently, the precise sequence of names, if the list is to reflect the various authors' roles and contributions. Subjective assessments of the contributions made by the individual members of a research group may differ substantially. As scientific collaboration - often across national boundaries - is now increasingly common, ensuring appropriate recognition of all parties is a complex matter and, where disagreements arise, it may not be easy to reach a consensus. In addition, customs have changed over the past few decades; for example, the practice of granting "honorary" authorship to an eminent researcher - formerly not unusual - is no longer considered acceptable. It should be borne in mind that the publications list has become by far the most important indicator of a researcher's scientific performance; for this reason, appropriate authorship credit has become a decisive factor in the careers of young researchers, and it needs to be managed and protected accordingly. At the international and national level, certain practices have therefore developed concerning the listing of authors and the obligations of authorship. The Scientific Integrity Committee of the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences has collated the relevant principles and regulations and formulated recommendations for authorship in scientific publications. These should help to prevent authorship disputes and offer guidance in the event of conflicts
