Mach number and wall thermal boundary condition effects on near-wall compressible turbulence
We investigate the effects of thermal boundary conditions and Mach number on
turbulence close to walls. In particular, we study the near-wall asymptotic
behavior for adiabatic and pseudo-adiabatic walls, and compare to the
asymptotic behavior recently found near isothermal cold walls (Baranwal et al.
(2022)). This is done by analyzing a new large database of highly-resolved
direct numerical simulations of turbulent channels with different wall thermal
conditions and centerline Mach numbers. We observe that the asymptotic
power-law behavior of Reynolds stresses as well as heat fluxes does change with
both centerline Mach number and thermal-condition at the wall. Power-law
exponents transition from their analytical expansion for solenoidal fields to
those for non-solenoidal field as the Mach number is increased, though this
transition is found to be dependent on the thermal boundary conditions. The
correlation coefficients between velocity and temperature are also found to be
affected by these factors. Consistent with recent proposals on universal
behavior of compressible turbulence, we find that dilatation at the wall is the
key scaling parameter for this power-law exponents providing a universal
functional law which can provide a basis for general models of near-wall

Development of a mechanism to facilitate the safety stock planning configuration in ERP
Safety stock planning in ERP in general is dependent upon the planner having the experience to simulate planning scenarios. This paper focuses on the development of a mechanism to calculate adequate safety stocks in accordance with required service levels while enabling efficient configuration of the ERP safety stock parameters. The proposed mechanism could be of great benefit to industrial firms as it offers the ability to classify demand patterns, proposes replenishment strategies that are consistent with the demand profile, calculates key parameters and identifies the changes required to the ERP master data. The associated real world application is able to identify potential to save approximately £1.2 M in stock reductions and, more importantly, allows targeted actions to be implemented at material level. These results demonstrated that the proposed mechanism can be considered as a valuable new development for manufacturing industry to gain the competitive advantage

Analyzing a fleet solution using scenarios
Transportation is one of the most important logistics activities, accounting for a significant part of the logistics costs and with high level of impact in terms of the service level provided to the customer. To counteract the upward trend in costs, it is fundamental to identify a transport strategy that can reduce costs and, at the same time, does not adversely affect the service levels agreed with customers. The main objective of this research is to propose a methodology for companies to identify, from a set of scenarios proposed and through a comparative analysis of scenarios, a new fleet solution, allowing the Company under study to reduce its transport costs without harming the current service level agreements with its customers. This research is grounded on a case study methodology. The case study used is of a small Portuguese company that produces, imports and distributes a wide range of products. The distribution is conducted based on both its own fleet and subcontracted transportation. The comparative analysis of scenarios allowed identifying the current transportation solution as the most advantageous one for the company. Plutonium isotopic composition by gamma-ray spectroscopy
We discuss the general approach, computerized data analysis methods, and results of measurements to determine the isotopic composition of plutonium by gamma-ray spectroscopy. The simple techniques are designed to be applicable to samples of arbitrary size, geometry, chemical and isotopic composition that have attained /sup 241/Pu-/sup 237/U equilibrium. The combination of the gamma spectroscopic measurement of isotopic composition coupled with calorimetric measurement of total sample power is shown to give a totally nondestructive determination of sample Pu mass with a precision of 0.6% for 1000-g samples of PuO/sub 2/ with 12% /sup 240/Pu content. The precision of isotopic measurements depends upon many factors including sample size, sample geometry, and isotopic content. Typical ranges are found to be /sup 238/Pu, < 1 to 10%; /sup 239/Pu, 0.1 to 0.5%; /sup 240/Pu, 2 to 5%; /sup 241/Pu, 0.3 to 0.7%; /sup 242/Pu (determined by isotopic correlation); and /sup 241/Am, 0.2 to 10%
A mathematical model for the onset of avascular tumor growth in response to the loss of p53 function
We present a mathematical model for the formation of an avascular tumor based on the loss by gene mutation of the tumor suppressor function of p53. The wild type p53 protein regulates apoptosis, cell expression of growth factor and matrix metalloproteinase, which are regulatory functions that many mutant p53 proteins do not possess. The focus is on a description of cell movement as the transport of cell population density rather than as the movement of individual cells. In contrast to earlier works on solid tumor growth, a model is proposed for the initiation of tumor growth. The central idea, taken from the mathematical theory of dynamical systems, is to view the loss of p53 function in a few cells as a small instability in a rest state for an appropriate system of differential equations describing cell movement. This instability is shown (numerically) to lead to a second, spatially inhomogeneous, solution that can be thought of as a solid tumor whose growth is nutrient diffusion limited. In this formulation, one is led to a system of nine partial differential equations. We show computationally that there can be tumor states that coexist with benign states and that are highly unstable in the sense that a slight increase in tumor size results in the tumor occupying the sample region while a slight decrease in tumor size results in its ultimate disappearance
An investigation into E-business service in the UK telecommunication manufacturing industry
Nowadays, suppliers’ product and service quality has risen in importance with a manufacturer’s push to develop core competencies and capitalise on global operations and markets. However, due to the complex features of business service, suppliers are facing significant challenges in providing service effectively and developing business collaboration. This is further complicated by the development of information and communication technologies (ICTs). This paper thus attempts to investigate the factors influencing buyers’ e-service (EBS) requirements and the impact of these requirements on business collaboration. Based on a questionnaire survey with 500 UK telecommunication manufacturers, this research identifies buyers’ different EBS requirements for different types of suppliers and the impact of ICTs on EBS requirements. While for suppliers our findings provide insights into buyers’ EBS requirements, they can help buyers to develop appropriate supplier selection criteria. The findings also contribute to a better understanding of the development of buyer and supplier business collaboration
