Detection of Acetylene toward Cepheus A East with Spitzer
The first map of interstellar acetylene (C2H2) has been obtained with the
infrared spectrograph onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. A spectral line map
of the vibration-rotation band at 13.7 microns carried out toward the
star-forming region Cepheus A East, shows that the C2H2 emission peaks in a few
localized clumps where gas-phase CO2 emission was previously detected with
Spitzer. The distribution of excitation temperatures derived from fits to the
C2H2 line profiles ranges from 50 to 200 K, a range consistent with that
derived for gaseous CO2 suggesting that both molecules probe the same warm gas
component. The C2H2 molecules are excited via radiative pumping by 13.7 microns
continuum photons emanating from the HW2 protostellar region. We derive column
densities ranging from a few x 10^13 to ~ 7 x 10^14 cm^-2, corresponding to
C2H2 abundances of 1 x 10^-9 to 4 x 10^-8 with respect to H2. The spatial
distribution of the C2H2 emission along with a roughly constant N(C2H2)/N(CO2)
strongly suggest an association with shock activity, most likely the result of
the sputtering of acetylene in icy grain mantles.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter
The adsorption and desorption of ethanol ices from a model grain surface
Reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) and temperature programed desorption (TPD) have been used to probe the adsorption and desorption of ethanol on highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) at 98 K. RAIR spectra for ethanol show that it forms physisorbed multilayers on the surface at 98 K. Annealing multilayer ethanol ices (exposures > 50 L) beyond 120 K gives rise to a change in morphology before crystallization within the ice occurs. TPD shows that ethanol adsorbs and desorbs molecularly on the HOPG surface and shows four different species in desorption. At low coverage, desorption of monolayer ethanol is observed and is described by first-order kinetics. With increasing coverage, a second TPD peak is observed at a lower temperature, which is assigned to an ethanol bilayer. When the coverage is further increased, a second multilayer, less strongly bound to the underlying ethanol ice film, is observed. This peak dominates the TPD spectra with increasing coverage and is characterized by fractional-order kinetics and a desorption energy of 56.3 +/- 1.7 kJ mol(-1). A silica long base tiltmeter with high stability and resolution
International audienceIn order to be able to provide valuable data in multiparameter measurement field operations, tiltmeters need to have a noise level better or equal than 10-9 rad for a period range from a few minutes to a few years and a long term stability ranging from 10-7 to 10-8 rad/yr. Tiltmeter measurements should also be as much as possible insensitive to thermal disturbances, by taking great care of the horizontality of the base line tube first. Secondly, thermal responses have been assessed. We also took great care of the coupling of our tiltmeters with the bedrock. We've designed a long base tiltmeter with sensors in silica which has a low dilatation coefficient. The linear variable displacement transducer is based on coil coupling (powered by an alternative voltage). Finally we show the results of two 100 m silica water tube tiltmeters which were installed in a mine in the French Vosges massif in the framework of a hydrology research project. These instruments show a remarkably good stability (6.5×10-9 rad/month) and a low noise level (of the order of 10-11 rad). Protein crystals in adenovirus type 5-infected cells: requirements for intranuclear crystallogenesis, structural and functional analysis
Intranuclear crystalline inclusions have been observed in the nucleus of epithelial cells infected with Adenovirus serotype 5 (Ad5) at late steps of the virus life cycle. Using immuno-electron microscopy and confocal microscopy of cells infected with various Ad5 recombinants modified in their penton base or fiber domains, we found that these inclusions represented crystals of penton capsomers, the heteromeric capsid protein formed of penton base and fiber subunits. The occurrence of protein crystals within the nucleus of infected cells required the integrity of the fiber knob and part of the shaft domain. In the knob domain, the region overlapping residues 489–492 in the FG loop was found to be essential for crystal formation. In the shaft, a large deletion of repeats 4 to 16 had no detrimental effect on crystal inclusions, whereas deletion of repeats 8 to 21 abolished crystal formation without altering the level of fiber protein expression. This suggested a crucial role of the five penultimate repeats in the crystallisation process. Chimeric pentons made of Ad5 penton base and fiber domains from different serotypes were analyzed with respect to crystal formation. No crystal was found when fiber consisted of shaft (S) from Ad5 and knob (K) from Ad3 (heterotypic S5-K3 fiber), but occurred with homotypic S3K3 fiber. However, less regular crystals were observed with homotypic S35-K35 fiber. TB5, a monoclonal antibody directed against the Ad5 fiber knob was found by immunofluorescence microscopy to react with high efficiency with the intranuclear protein crystals in situ. Data obtained with Ad fiber mutants indicated that the absence of crystalline inclusions correlated with a lower infectivity and/or lower yields of virus progeny, suggesting that the protein crystals might be involved in virion assembly. Thus, we propose that TB5 staining of Ad-infected 293 cells can be used as a prognostic assay for the viability and productivity of fiber-modified Ad5 vectors
Distributional and classical solutions to the Cauchy Boltzmann problem for soft potentials with integrable angular cross section
This paper focuses on the study of existence and uniqueness of distributional
and classical solutions to the Cauchy Boltzmann problem for the soft potential
case assuming integrability of the angular part of the collision
kernel (Grad cut-off assumption). For this purpose we revisit the
Kaniel--Shinbrot iteration technique to present an elementary proof of
existence and uniqueness results that includes large data near a local
Maxwellian regime with possibly infinite initial mass. We study the propagation
of regularity using a recent estimate for the positive collision operator given
in [3], by E. Carneiro and the authors, that permits to study such propagation
without additional conditions on the collision kernel. Finally, an
-stability result (with ) is presented assuming the

Visible photodissociation spectroscopy of PAH cations and derivatives in the PIRENEA experiment
The electronic spectra of gas-phase cationic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
(PAHs), trapped in the Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance cell of the
PIRENEA experiment, have been measured by multiphoton dissociation spectroscopy
in the 430-480 nm spectral range using the radiation of a mid-band optical
parametric oscillator laser. We present here the spectra recorded for different
species of increasing size, namely the pyrene cation (C16H10+), the
1-methylpyrene cation (CH3-C16H9+), the coronene cation (C24H12+), and its
dehydrogenated derivative C24H10+. The experimental results are interpreted
with the help of time-dependent density functional theory calculations and
analysed using spectral information on the same species obtained from matrix
isolation spectroscopy data. A kinetic Monte Carlo code has also been used, in
the case of pyrene and coronene cations, to estimate the absorption
cross-sections of the measured electronic transitions. Gas-phase spectra of
highly reactive species such as dehydrogenated PAH cations are reported for the
first time
Laboratory evidence for efficient water formation in interstellar ices
Even though water is the main constituent in interstellar icy mantles, its
chemical origin is not well understood. Three different formation routes have
been proposed following hydrogenation of O, O2, or O3, but experimental
evidence is largely lacking. We present a solid state astrochemical laboratory
study in which one of these routes is tested. For this purpose O2 ice is
bombarded by H- or D-atoms under ultra high vacuum conditions at astronomically
relevant temperatures ranging from 12 to 28 K. The use of reflection absorption
infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) permits derivation of reaction rates and shows
efficient formation of H2O (D2O) with a rate that is surprisingly independent
of temperature. This formation route converts O2 into H2O via H2O2 and is found
to be orders of magnitude more efficient than previously assumed. It should
therefore be considered as an important channel for interstellar water ice

The state of European nursing research : dead, alive, or chronically diseased? a systematic literature review
Background: Reviews of nursing research have suggested that most is descriptive; with no more than 15% providing strong evidence for practice. No studies have examined this from the perspective of nursing research conducted in Europe.
Objective: The aim of this study was to review reports of European clinical nursing research in the top 20 nursing journals in 2010 to establish a baseline of nursing research activity in the year immediately prior to the launch of a European Science Foundation network to increase the proportion of intervention research in Europe.
Methods: We identified eligible reports that were then data-extracted by two independent reviewers. Disagreements were resolved through pair discussion and independent arbitration. We appraised and synthesized topics, methods, and the extent to which studies were programmatic.
We synthesized data as proportions of study reports meeting our a priori categorization criteria.
Results: We identified 1995 published reports and included 223 from 21 European countries, of which 193 (86.6%) reported studies of primary research only, 30 (13.5%) secondary research, and three (1.4%) a mix of primary and secondary. Methodological description was often poor, misleading, or even absent. One hundred (44.8%) articles reported observational studies, 87 (39.0%) qualitative studies. We found 26 (11.7%) articles reporting experimental studies, 10 (4.5%) of which were randomized controlled trials. We found 29 (13.0%) reports located within a larger program of research. Seventy-six (34.1%) articles reported studies of nursing interventions.
Linking Evidence to Action: European research in nursing reported in the leading nursing journals remains descriptive and poorly described. Only a third of research reports concerned nursing interventions, and a tiny proportion were part of a programmatic endeavor. Researchers in nursing must become better educated and skilled in developing, testing, evaluating, and reporting complex nursing interventions. Editors of nursing journals should insist on systematic reporting of research designs and methods in published articles
Gametocytes: insights gained during a decade of molecular monitoring
In vertebrate hosts, malaria parasites produce specialized male and female sexual stages (gametocytes). Soon after being taken up by a mosquito, gametocytes rapidly produce gametes and, once mated, they infect their vector and can be transmitted to new hosts. Despite being the parasite stages that were first identified (over a century ago), gametocytes have remained elusive, and basic questions remain concerning their biology. However, the postgenomic era has substantiated information on the specialized molecular machinery of gametocytogenesis and expedited the development of molecular tools to detect and quantify gametocytes. The application of such highly sensitive and specific tools has opened up novel approaches and provided new insights into gametocyte biology. Here, we review the discoveries made during the past decade, highlight unanswered questions and suggest new directions
