Abstract Pollution from human activities is a major threat to the ecological integrity of fluvial ecosystems. Microbial communities are the most abundant organisms in biofilms, and are key indicators of various pollutants. We investigated the effects some human stressors (nutrients and heavy metals) have on the structure and activity of microbial communities in seven sampling sites located in the Ter River basin (NE Spain). Water and biofilm samples were collected in order to characterize physicochemical and biofilm parameters. The 16S rRNA gene was analysed out from DNA and RNA extracts to obtain α and β diversity. Principal coordinates analyses (PCoA) of the operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in the resident microbial community revealed that nutrients and conductivity were the main driving forces behind the diversity and composition. The effects of mining have had mainly seen on the taxonomic composition of the active microbial community, but also at the OTUs level. Remarkably, metal-impacted communities were very active, which would indicate a close link with the stress faced, that is probably related to the stimulation of detoxification

Uma causa rara de tumefação axilar

Axillary swelling is a common condition in pediatric age. The most common diagnosis is lymph node swelling, but it can also be caused by soft tissue tumors, vascular lesions, or inflammation of sweat glands. In rare cases, it can be due to ectopic breast tissue (EBT). A 14-year-old female presented with right axillary pain with one year of evolution and swelling for the past two months, gradually increasing in size, especially during menstruation. Sonography revealed EBT in both axillae, and further study showed duplication of the excretory system in both kidneys. The tissue on the right axilla was excised. EBT should be considered in the differential diagnosis of axillary swelling in adolescents and young females. When the diagnosis is established, the presence of associated urologic anomalies should be investigated. Clinicians should be aware that EBT can undergo the same pathological changes as normally located breast tissue. Surgical removal should be considered for cosmetic and prophylactic treatment.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Octreotide in the treatment of neonatal postoperative chylothorax : report of three cases and literature review

    Get PDF
Chylothorax is a well-recognized omplication after neonatal cardiothoracic surgery. Management strategies include cessation of enteral feedings, repeated aspiration, chest drainage, and total parenteral nutrition. Somatostatin and its analogue, octreotide, have been used with promising results. The authors present three cases of neonatal postoperative chylothorax in which ctreotide was used. After literature review, we can say that octreotide is relatively safe, and may reduce clinical course and complications associated with neonatal postoperative chylothorax. One should be aware of possible association between octreotide and necrotizing enterocolitis. Prospective controlled trials supporting octreotide use are lacking

Y-Chromosome Variation in Hominids: Intraspecific Variation Is Limited to the Polygamous Chimpanzee

The original publication is available at www.plosone.orgBackground: We have previously demonstrated that the Y-specific ampliconic fertility genes DAZ (deleted in azoospermia) and CDY (chromodomain protein Y) varied with respect to copy number and position among chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). In comparison, seven Y-chromosomal lineages of the bonobo (Pan paniscus), the chimpanzee’s closest living relative, showed no variation. We extend our earlier comparative investigation to include an analysis of the intraspecific variation of these genes in gorillas (Gorilla gorilla) and orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus), and examine the resulting patterns in the light of the species’ markedly different social and mating behaviors. Methodology/Principal Findings: Fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis (FISH) of DAZ and CDY in 12 Y-chromosomal lineages of western lowland gorilla (G. gorilla gorilla) and a single lineage of the eastern lowland gorilla (G. beringei graueri) showed no variation among lineages. Similar findings were noted for the 10 Y-chromosomal lineages examined in the Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus), and 11 Y-chromosomal lineages of the Sumatran orangutan (P. abelii). We validated the contrasting DAZ and CDY patterns using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) in chimpanzee and bonobo. Conclusion/Significance: High intraspecific variation in copy number and position of the DAZ and CDY genes is seen only in the chimpanzee. We hypothesize that this is best explained by sperm competition that results in the variant DAZ and CDY haplotypes detected in this species. In contrast, bonobos, gorillas and orangutans—species that are not subject to sperm competition—showed no intraspecific variation in DAZ and CDY suggesting that monoandry in gorillas, and preferential female mate choice in bonobos and orangutans, probably permitted the fixation of a single Y variant in each taxon. These data support the notion that the evolutionary history of a primate Y chromosome is not simply encrypted in its DNA sequences, but is also shaped by the social and behavioral circumstances under which the specific species has evolved.Funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (SCHE 214/8)Publisher's versio

Antioxidant enzyme activities in fluvial biofilms as biomakers of metal pollution

    Get PDF
The present thesis aims to evaluate the use of antioxidant enzyme activities (AEA) of biofilm communities as biomarkers of metal pollution (mainly Zn) in fluvial ecosystems. In order to test AEA as biomarkers of metal pollution as well as their responses to environmental variables, several ecotoxicological experiments have been performed. A zoom from field studies (with high ecological realism) to microcosm experiments (under controlled conditions) has been done to fill the gap between both approaches and understand AEA responses under a multiple-stress (environmental and metallic) scenario. The field studies were carried out in the Riera d’Osor, a tributary of the Ter, located in the region of La Selva (Girona province)L’objectiu d’aquesta tesi és avaluar l’ús de les activitats enzimàtiques antioxidants (AEA) dels biofilms com a biomarcadors de contaminació metàl·lica (principalment per zinc (Zn)) en els ecosistemes fluvials.
