How neutral is the intergalactic medium surrounding the redshift z=7.085 quasar ULAS J1120+0641?
The quasar ULAS J1120+0641 at redshift z=7.085 has a highly ionised near zone
which is smaller than those around quasars of similar luminosity at z~6. The
spectrum also exhibits evidence for a damping wing extending redward of the
systemic Lya redshift. We use radiative transfer simulations in a cosmological
context to investigate the implications for the ionisation state of the
inhomogeneous IGM surrounding this quasar. Our simulations show that the
transmission profile is consistent with an IGM in the vicinity of the quasar
with a volume averaged HI fraction of f_HI>0.1 and that ULAS J1120+0641 has
been bright for 10^6--10^7 yr. The observed spectrum is also consistent with
smaller IGM neutral fractions, f_HI ~ 10^-3--10-4, if a damped Lya system in an
otherwise highly ionised IGM lies within 5 proper Mpc of the quasar. This is,
however, predicted to occur in only ~5 per cent of our simulated sight-lines
for a bright phase of 10^6--10^7 yr. Unless ULAS J1120+0641 grows during a
previous optically obscured phase, the low age inferred for the quasar adds to
the theoretical challenge of forming a 2x10^9 M_sol black hole at this high

Closing in on the picture : analyzing interactions in video recordings
This paper provides a detailed account of the processing and analysing of data, obtained through video recording during reflective practitioner research. It sets out five stages in the analysis of video recordings of classroom interactions during a series of educational drama lessons: from decisions relating to the selection of data for close analysis, to the seeking of themes, and finally to the presentation of conclusions. The researcher adapted and synthesised several processes derived from discourse analysis (Wells, 2001; Spiers, 2004; Gee, 2005) to produce a range of instruments for use in transcription and analysis of verbal and non-verbal discourse. These include: a simple transcription key; classifications for verbal and non-verbal discourse; and a template for a transcription and analysis matrix
Putting Ethics on the Agenda for Real Estate Agents
This article uses sociological role theory to
help understand ethical challenges faced by Norwegian
real estate agents. The article begins with an introductory
case, and then briefly examines the strengths and limitations
of using legal definitions and rules for understanding
real estate agency and real estate agent ethics. It goes on to
argue that the ethical challenges of real estate agency can
be described and understood as a system of conflicting
roles with associated rights and duties, in particular sales
agent, intermediary and adviser sub-roles. The arguments
are developed using exploratory findings from a survey of
Norwegian real estate agents and from several focus
groups. The article then suggests the use of various
intranet tools as a kind of action research aimed at putting
ethics on the real estate agents’ agenda, working to
develop a collective conscience and collective selfcriticism
among the agents, and, in doing so, building
bridges between academic research and the practical
working world of the agents
Possible evidence for an inverted temperature-density relation in the intergalactic medium from the flux distribution of the Lyman-alpha forest
We compare the improved measurement of the Lya forest flux probability
distribution at 1.7<z<3.2 presented by Kim et al. (2007) to a large set of
hydrodynamical simulations of the Lya forest with different cosmological
parameters and thermal histories. The simulations are in good agreement with
the observational data if the temperature-density relation for the low density
intergalactic medium (IGM), T=T_0 Delta^{gamma-1}, is either close to
isothermal or inverted (gamma<1). Our results suggest that the voids in the IGM
may be significantly hotter and the thermal state of the low density IGM may be
substantially more complex than is usually assumed at these redshifts. We
discuss radiative transfer effects which alter the spectral shape of ionising
radiation during the epoch of HeII reionisation as a possible physical

Dietary intake in post-menopausal women
Si has been suggested as an essential element, and may be important in optimal bone, skin and cardiovascular health. However, there are few estimates of dietary Si intakes in man, especially in a UK population. Following the development of a UK food composition database for Si, the aim of the present study was to investigate dietary intakes of Si amongst healthy women aged over 60 years and to identify important food sources of Si in their diet. Healthy, post-menopausal female subjects (>60 years of age; n 209) were recruited from the general population around Dundee, Scotland as part of an unrelated randomised controlled intervention study where dietary intake was assessed using a self-administered, semi-quantitative food-frequency questionnaire at five time-points over a 2-year period. Food composition data on the Si content of UK foods was used to determine the Si content of food items on the food-frequency questionnaire. Mean Si intake was 18·6 (sd 4·6) mg and did not vary significantly across the 2 years of investigation. Cereals provided the greatest amount of Si in the diet (about 30%), followed by fruit, beverages (hot, cold and alcoholic beverages combined) and vegetables; together these foods provided over 75% about Si intake. Si intakes in the UK appear consistent with those reported previously for elderly women in Western populations, but lower than those reported for younger women or for men.<br /
The impact of relative position and returns on sacrifice and reciprocity: an experimental study using individual decisions
We present a comprehensive experimental design that makes it possible to characterize other-regarding preferences and their relationship to the decision maker’s relative position. Participants are faced with a large number of decisions involving variations in the trade-offs between own and other’s payoffs, as well as in other potentially important factors like the decision maker’s relative position. We find that: (1) choices are responsive to the cost of helping and hurting others; (2) The weight a decision maker places on others’ monetary payoffs depends on whether the decision maker is in an advantageous or disadvantageous relative position; and (3) We find no evidence of reciprocity of the type linked to menu-dependence. The results of a mixture-model estimation show considerable heterogeneity in subjects’ motivations and confirm the absence of reciprocal motives. Pure selfish behavior is the most frequently observed behavior. Among the subjects exhibiting social preferences, social-welfare maximization is the most frequent, followed by inequality-aversion and by competitiveness
A seven square degrees survey for galaxy-scale gravitational lenses with the HST imaging archive
We present the results of a visual search for galaxy-scale gravitational
lenses in nearly 7 square degrees of Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images. The
dataset comprises the whole imaging data ever taken with the Advanced Camera
for Surveys (ACS) in the filter F814W (I-band) up to August 31st, 2011, i.e.
6.03 square degrees excluding the field of the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS)
which has been the subject of a separate visual search. In addition, we have
searched for lenses in the whole Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) near-IR imaging
dataset in all filters (1.01 square degrees) up to the same date. Our primary
goal is to provide a sample of lenses with a broad range of different
morphologies and lens-source brightness contrast in order estimate a lower
limit to the number of galaxy-scale strong lenses in the future Euclid survey
in its VIS band. Our criteria to select lenses are purely morphological as we
do not use any colour or redshift information.The final candidate selection is
very conservative hence leading to a nearly pure but incomplete sample. We find
49 new lens candidates: 40 in the ACS images and 9 in the WFC3 images. Out of
these, 16 candidates are secure lenses owing to their striking morphology, 21
more are very good candidates, and 12 more have morphologies compatible with
gravitational lensing but also compatible with other astrophysical objects. It
is therefore insensitive to cosmic variance and allows to estimate the number
of galaxy-scale strong lenses on the sky for a putative survey depth, which is
the main result of the present work. Because of the incompleteness of the
sample, the estimated lensing rates should be taken as lower limits. Using
these, we anticipate that a 15 000 square degrees space survey such as Euclid
will find at least 60 000 galaxy-scale strong lenses down to a limiting AB
magnitude of I = 24.5 (10-sigma) or I = 25.8 (3-sigma).Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRA
Validation of the log e–log σ normal compression law using particle strength data
This note is a study of experimental data on particle strength and normal compression, to establish whether the recently proposed normal compression law by McDowell and de Bono (2013) is supported and confirmed. A number of different sands are examined and found to support the hypothesis. In addition, some new simulations on sand mixtures are used to explain experimental results for quartz-feldspar mixtures. It would appear that the proposed compression law is also supported by the data for the sand mixtures
