Increased susceptibility to proactive interference in adults with dyslexia?

    Get PDF
Recent findings show that people with dyslexia have an impairment in serial-order memory. Based on these findings, the present study aimed to test the hypothesis that people with dyslexia have difficulties dealing with proactive interference (PI) in recognition memory. A group of 25 adults with dyslexia and a group of matched controls were subjected to a 2-back recognition task, which required participants to indicate whether an item (mis)matched the item that had been presented 2 trials before. PI was elicited using lure trials in which the item matched the item in the 3-back position instead of the targeted 2-back position. Our results demonstrate that the introduction of lure trials affected 2-back recognition performance more severely in the dyslexic group than in the control group, suggesting greater difficulty in resisting PI in dyslexia.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

DAC-Less amplifier-less generation and transmission of QAM signals using sub-volt silicon-organic hybrid modulators

    Get PDF
We demonstrate generation and transmission of optical signals by directly interfacing highly efficient silicon-organic hybrid (SOH) modulators to binary output ports of a field-programmable gate array. Using an SOH Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) and an SOH IQ modulator we generate ON-OFF- keying and binary phase-shift keying signals as well as quadrature phase-shift keying and 16-state quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) formats. Peak-to-peak voltages amount to only 0.27 V-pp for driving the MZM and 0.41 V-pp for the IQ modulator. Neither digital-to-analog converters nor drive amplifiers are required, and the RF energy consumption in the modulator amounts to record-low 18 fJ/bit for 16QAM signaling

Modulation with 7.5dB transmitter penalty is demonstrated from a novel 1.5Vpp differential CMOS driver flip-chip integrated with a Si ring modulator, consuming 350fJ/bit from a single 1V supply at bit rates up to 10Gb/s

Modeling of chemical processes in the low pressure capacitive RF discharges in a mixture of Ar/C2H2

We study the properties of a capacitive 13.56 MHz discharge properties with a mixture of Ar/C2H2 taking into account the plasmochemistry and growth of heavy hydrocarbons. A hybrid model was developed to combine the kinetic description for electron motion and the fluid approach for negative and positive ions transport and plasmochemical processes. A significant change of plasma parameters related to injection of 5.8% portion of acetylene in argon was observed and analyzed. We found that the electronegativity of the mixture is about 30%. The densities of negatively and positively charged heavy hydrocarbons are sufficiently large to be precursors for the formation of nanoparticles in the discharge volume.Comment: 11 pages, 14 figure

The aims of this study was to develop a computer-based learning media is valid and practical course on pastry in the ca of IKK FPP UNP. This study uses Research And Development (R & D) is the method used to produce a specific product and test the feasibility of the product. Products produced in the form of computer-based learning media in the Department of IKK FPP UNP. Data collection techniques in this study conducted using questionnaires given to lecturers caterers and questionnaire responses of students to the media developed and analyzed using analysis deskripstif which includes analysis of the validity, and analysis of the practicalities. The results of this study indicate that the validity of computer-based learning media on valid category (0.89). While the practicalities of the test, the lecturer / practitioner gives very practical category (92.7%) and students leave with a very practical category (88.7%). Based on these findings it can be concluded that computer-based learning media is valid and practical to be used as a medium of learning in the subject of Pastry

Mental health professionals’ knowledge, skills and attitudes on domestic violence and abuse in the Netherlands:Cross-sectional study

    Get PDF
Background Despite the high prevalence of domestic violence and abuse (DVA) among patients with psychiatric conditions, detection rates are low. Limited knowledge and skills on DVA in mental healthcare (MHC) professionals might contribute to poor identification.AimsTo assess the level of, and factors associated with, DVA knowledge and skills among MHC professionals. Method A total of 278 professionals in Dutch MHC institutions completed a survey assessing factual knowledge, perceived knowledge, perceived skills and attitudes about DVA. Results On average, low scores were reported for perceived skills and knowledge. MHC professionals in primary care scored higher than those working with individuals with severe mental illness (P<0.005). Levels of factual knowledge were higher; levels of attitudes moderate. Previous training was positively associated with skills (odds ratios (OR) = 3.0) and attitudes (OR = 2.7). Years of work was negatively associated with factual knowledge (OR = 0.97). Larger case-loads predicted higher scores on skills (OR = 2.1). Conclusions Training is needed, particularly for clinicians working with patients with severe mental illness

Spin-dependent resonant tunneling through semimetallic ErAs quantum wells

Resonant tunneling through semimetallic ErAs quantum wells embedded in GaAs structures with AlAs barriers was recently found to exhibit an intriguing behavior in magnetic fields which is explained in terms of tunneling selection rules and the spin-polarized band structure including spin-orbit coupling.Comment: 4 pages, figures supplied as self-unpacking figures.uu, uses epsfig.sty to incorporate figures in preprin

Blood pressure, antihypertensive medication and neuropsychiatric symptoms in older people with dementia: The COSMOS study

    Get PDF
Objectives Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are very common in older patients with dementia. There is increasing evidence that hypoperfusion of the brain plays a role in the development of NPS. The aim of this study is to assess whether there is an association between low systolic blood pressure (SBP) and NPS and if NPS are more prevalent in older people with dementia using antihypertensive medication. Methods We studied the baseline data from participants in the Communication, Systematic pain treatment, Medication review, Organized activities and Safety study, a multicenter clustered trial with 765 participants from 72 nursing home units from 37 nursing homes in Norway. SBP (lowest quartile vs rest) and use of antihypertensive medication were predictors and Neuropsychiatric Inventory—Nursing Home version (NPI-NH) score (total and clusters) was the outcome. Missing data were imputed, except for missing data in predictors. We used a mixed model analysis adjusted for age, sex and Minimal Mental State Examination (MMSE) score. In a sensitivity analysis, continuous SBP values were used. Results In total, 412 patients were included with a mean age of 86.9 years, 53.9% had a MMSE score of <11. There was no difference in total NPI-NH score between low and high SBP (difference −1.07, Pdj = 0.62). There was no difference between high and low SBP and the NPI clusters. The use of antihypertensive medication was not associated with a different total or cluster NPI-NH score compared to no use (difference −0.99, Padj = 0.95, Pall = 0.37-0.99, respectively). In the sensitivity analyses with the continuous SBP levels, there was no association between SBP and NPI-NH score (estimate 1.00, 95%CI 0.98-1.01, P = 0.25). Conclusion We found no association between low SBP and NPS, nor between antihypertensive use and NPS.publishedVersio
