Primordial Black Holes, Hawking Radiation and the Early Universe

    Get PDF
The 511 keV gamma emission from the galactic core may originate from a high concentration (1022\sim 10^{22}) of primordial black holes (PBHs) in the core each of whose Hawking radiation includes 1021\sim 10^{21} positrons per second. The PBHs we consider are taken as near the lightest with longevity greater than the age of the universe (mass 1012\sim 10^{12} kg; Schwarzschild radius 1\sim 1 fm). These PBHs contribute only a small fraction of cold dark matter, ΩPBH108\Omega_{PBH} \sim 10^{-8}. This speculative hypothesis, if confirmed implies the simultaneous discovery of Hawking radiation and an early universe phase transition.Comment: 4 Page

MeV-mass dark matter and primordial nucleosynthesis

The annihilation of new dark matter candidates with masses mXm_X in the MeV range may account for the galactic positrons that are required to explain the 511 keV γ\gamma-ray flux from the galactic bulge. We study the impact of MeV-mass thermal relic particles on the primordial synthesis of 2^2H, 4^4He, and 7^7Li. If the new particles are in thermal equilibrium with neutrinos during the nucleosynthesis epoch they increase the helium mass fraction for m_X\alt 10 MeV and are thus disfavored. If they couple primarily to the electromagnetic plasma they can have the opposite effect of lowering both helium and deuterium. For mX=4m_X=4--10 MeV they can even improve the overall agreement between the predicted and observed 2^2H and 4^4He abundances.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, references and two appendices added, conclusions unchanged; accepted for publication in Phys.Rev.

    Casimir interactions in graphene systems

The non-retarded Casimir interaction (van der Waals interaction) between two free standing graphene sheets as well as between a graphene sheet and a substrate is determined. An exact analytical expression is given for the dielectric function of graphene along the imaginary frequency axis within the random phase approximation for arbitrary frequency, wave vector, and doping.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Investigating the pre-main sequence magnetic chemically peculiar system HD 72106

The origin of the strong magnetic fields observed in chemically peculiar Ap and Bp stars stars has long been debated. The recent discovery of magnetic fields in the intermediate mass pre-main sequence Herbig Ae and Be stars links them to Ap and Bp stars, providing vital clues about Ap and Bp stars and the origin and evolution of magnetic fields in intermediate and high mass stars. A detailed study of one young magnetic B star, HD 72106A, is presented. This star appears to be in a binary system with an apparently normal Herbig Ae star. A maximum longitudinal magnetic field strength of +391 +/- 65 G is found in HD 72106A, as are strong chemical peculiarities, with photospheric abundances of some elements ranging up to 100x above solar.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. Self-interacting dark matter and Higgs bosons in the SU(3)_C x SU(3)_L x U(1)_N model with right-handed neutrinos

We investigate the possibility that dark matter could be made from CP-even and CP- odd Higgs bosons in the SU(3)_C X SU(3)_L X U(1)_N (3-3-1) model with right-handed neutrinos. This self-interacting dark matters are stable without imposing of new symmetry and should be weak-interacting.Comment: 7 pages, Latex, To appear in Europhys. Let

Some Findings Concerning Requirements in Agile Methodologies

    Get PDF
gile methods have appeared as an attractive alternative to conventional methodologies. These methods try to reduce the time to market and, indirectly, the cost of the product through flexible development and deep customer involvement. The processes related to requirements have been extensively studied in literature, in most cases in the frame of conventional methods. However, conclusions of conventional methodologies could not be necessarily valid for Agile; in some issues, conventional and Agile processes are radically different. As recent surveys report, inadequate project requirements is one of the most conflictive issues in agile approaches and better understanding about this is needed. This paper describes some findings concerning requirements activities in a project developed under an agile methodology. The project intended to evolve an existing product and, therefore, some background information was available. The major difficulties encountered were related to non-functional needs and management of requirements dependencies

Music Tagging Type Definitions: Systems for Music Representation and Retrieval.

    Get PDF
The paper discusses the general issues surrounding structured music information representation and music information retrieval, and present the result of the UK-JISC funded “proof-of-concept” project: MuTaTeD! (C. Hall and C. Boehm, 2000) (Music Tagging Type Definition) and discuss further development within the UK Library Information Commission funded MuTaTeD'II project (C. Boehm and D. MacLellan, 2000). Work within the two projects MuTaTeD! and MuTaTeD'II, striving towards the design and implementation of an expandable, flexible music information retrieval system with delivery/access services for encoded music, has resulted in involvement in standards development such as MPEG7, to support the needs of developers within music information retrieval research

MeV Dark Matter: Has It Been Detected?

We discuss the possibility that the recent detection of 511 keV gamma-rays from the galactic bulge, as observed by INTEGRAL, is a consequence of low mass (~MeV) particle dark matter annihilations. We discuss the type of halo profile favored by the observations as well as the size of the annihilation cross section needed to account for the signal. We find that such a scenario is consistent with the observed dark matter relic density and other constraints from astrophysics and particle physics.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur
