Interpretación y formación ad hoc. Una aproximación contextual y ascendiente a la noción de calidad

Research on interpreting and quality has tended to remain centered on highly institutionalized contexts. In an attempt to fill this gap, this paper proposes to extend the scope of analysis of professional practice and teaching-learning to ad hoc interpreting situations. In its approach to quality, it also aims to pay special attention to the socio-economic, geopolitical and socio-professional circumstances in which interpreting takes place. The case study of ad hoc initiatives to guarantee interpreting quality in social forums — characterized by volunteer work, political engagement and lack of resources— invites for an approach to the notion of quality that is both contextual and bottom-up (stemming from the ground within which interpreting is practiced and learnt) so as to identify relevant and appropriate guidelines for the situation under study.La investigación sobre interpretación y calidad ha tendido a ceñirse a contextos altamente institucionalizados. Para tratar de llenar este vacío, este artículo propone ampliar el escopo de análisis dela práctica profesional y de la enseñanza-aprendizaje a situaciones de interpretación ad hoc. Asimismo, pretende abordar la calidad prestando especial atención a las circunstancias socio-económicas, geopolíticas y socio-profesionales en las que se plasman la interpretación así como la calidad de la misma. El estudio de caso de las iniciativas ad hoc para garantizar la calidad de la interpretación en los foros sociales — caracterizado por el trabajo voluntario, el compromiso político y la falta de recursos— invita a una aproximación de la noción de calidad que sea contextual y ascendiente (que parta del terreno en el que se practica y se aprende la interpretación) con el fin de identificar pautas de actuación que sean relevantes y apropiadas para la situación contemplada

Les langues au cœur des dispositifs des mouvements sociaux transnationaux : processus d’innovation au sein du réseau Babels

La traduction constitue un maillon essentiel de la construction communicationnelle de l’engagement citoyen au sein des mouvements sociaux transnationaux. Afin de rendre compte de ce rôle, nous nous pencherons sur Babels, le réseau international de traducteurs et interprètes volontaires, qui considère que la traduction et l’interprétation (ainsi que la diversité linguistique et culturelle dont elles sont garantes) sont inhérentes au processus de transformation sociale à l’échelle planétaire porté par l’altermondialisme. Nous structurerons notre analyse autour de la dialectique entre contrainte et liberté qui, au sein de ce mouvement social transnational, se déploie autour de quatre sous-dialectiques : représentation/participation, révolution/délibération, événement/processus, verticalité/horizontalité.Translation constitutes a critical link for the communicational construction of civic engagement within transnational social movements. In an attempt to account for this role, I will focus on Babels, the international network of volunteer translators and interpreters, which considers translation and interpreting (as well as linguistic and cultural diversity) to be inherent to the process of world-wide social transformation processes sparked by the alter-globalisation movement. The analysis will be structured around the dialectic between freedom and constraints which, within this transnational social movement, takes the shape of four sub-dialectics: representation/participation, revolution/deliberation, event/process, verticality/horizontality

Emerging narratives of conference interpreters’ training: a case study of ad hoc training in Babels and the Social Forum

Desde una perspectiva narrativa, este artículo explora cómo la práctica y la formación en interpretación de conferencias/nse han percibido en la disciplina, en la profesión y en diferentes/ncolectivos de traductores e interpretes comprometid@s como ECOS/ny Babels. Sostiene que estas distintas maneras de percibir la interpretación no son meramente opuestas sino que su potencial confluencia es clave para hacer posible una interpretación de conferencias más comprometida políticamente y más socio-crítica en un mundo de desigualdades cada vez más acentuadas y de mercantilización creciente de todos los aspectos de la vida. El artículo lleva a cabo un estudio de caso sobre la formación ad hoc de intérpretes en el Foro Social, en particular el Foro Social Europeo de Londres, y analiza cómo el trabajo colectivo entre instituciones educativas y sociedad civil tanto local como global ha dado luz a prácticas transformadoras hacia una metodología de formación más/nsocio-critica y con mayor consciencia ética

The Political Challenges of Cooperative Translation Platforms in the Age of Globalization

À l’ère de la mondialisation et du numérique dit « contributif », la coopération entre les machines et les usagerstraducteurs est en plein essor et soulève des interrogations politiques et éthiques pour les SIC et les SHS. Ce phénomène de coopération entre la machine et l’humain entraîne des médiations multiples de la communication : médiation interlinguistique, interculturelle, technologique, scientifique, etc. À partir d’une définition interdisciplinaire de la traduction, au croisement des translation studies, des cultural studies et de la sociologie de la traduction, cet article propose le concept de « dispositif de traduction coopérative » pour examiner ces médiations au sein de ces dispositifs de communication, tout en reconnaissant l’engagement politique et éthique du chercheur en tant que médiateur au sein des dispositifs qu’il co-construit et analyse. Cette démarche critique et méta-critique de l’innovation dépasse la question de la traduction mais en demeure indissociable.In the age of globalization and digital “collaboration,” the burgeoning cooperation between machines and translatorusers raises political and ethical questions not only for communication studies but also for the social sciences and humanities as a whole. This phenomenon of human-machine cooperation involves numerous mediations of communication: interlinguistic, intercultural, technological, and scientific, etc. On the basis of an interdisciplinary definition of translation, at the intersection of translation studies, cultural studies, and the sociology of translation, this article explores the concept of the “cooperative translation platform.” It does so in order to examine how communication is mediated within these communication platforms, while also acknowledging the political and ethical commitments of the researcher as mediator within the tools s/he co-constructs and analyzes. This critical and meta-critical approach to innovation goes beyond the question of translation, while remaining indissociable from it

Vers une approche communicationnelle de l’engagement : les récits des traducteurs-interprètes du réseau Babels dans le mouvement altermondialiste

The paradigm of neutrality which has long prevailed in the conceptualisation of Translation and Interpreting practices has been largely questioned by translation scholars in the 90s. Like fieldwork anthropologists in the 50/60s, translation scholars recognised that neither knowledge transfer nor intercultural/linguistic mediation can ever take place objectively. In the context of this epistemological shift, the study of translators’ and interpreters’ engagement is faced with a double challenge : opening up the scope of analysis of engagement and problematizing the subjectivity of any actor involved in the analysis, practitioners and researchers alike. Engagement, in the sense of action oriented towards societal change, ought to be analyzed beyond the human/social divide. This study proposes a communicational and narrative approach to explore the relationships between “collective identity”, “collective action” and organizations, at the heart of social movements theory, and recounts the ways in which these three elements, co-constructed by actors of a given translators’ and interpreters’ organization, underpin any type engagement. Resorting to narrative theory, this study focuses on interactions among actors within the communicational device of Babels, the international network of volunteer translators and interpreters, born in the context of the social forums, and examines the ways in which practitioners grant meaning to their engagement in time and space

Babels, the social forum and the conference : interpreting community overlapping and competing narratives on activism and interpreting in the era of globalisation

In a society increasingly polarised by processes of globalisation, and given the shift from national to transnational spheres of action in resisting these processes, there is a pressing need to reflect on the socio-political profile of translators and interpreters, not only in the labour market of the public and private sectors, but also in civil society. This case-study of activist interpreting ultimately invites practitioners, professionals and scholars to critically reflect on the narratives that circulate in the field in order to bring about greater engagement with the role played by translation and interpreting in an increasingly competitive, polarised and violent society.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo
