    Observing the sky at extremely high energies with the Cherenkov Telescope Array: Status of the GCT project

    The Cherenkov Telescope Array is the main global project of ground-based gamma-ray astronomy for the coming decades. Performance will be significantly improved relative to present instruments, allowing a new insight into the high-energy Universe [1]. The nominal CTA southern array will include a sub-array of seventy 4 m telescopes spread over a few square kilometers to study the sky at extremely high energies, with the opening of a new window in the multi-TeV energy range. The Gamma-ray Cherenkov Telescope (GCT) is one of the proposed telescope designs for that sub-array. The GCT prototype recorded its first Cherenkov light on sky in 2015. After an assessment phase in 2016, new observations have been performed successfully in 2017. The GCT collaboration plans to install its first telescopes and cameras on the CTA site in Chile in 2018-2019 and to contribute a number of telescopes to the subsequent CTA production phase.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, ICRC201

    Low Energy States of 3181Ga50^{81}_{31} Ga_{50} : Elements on the Doubly-Magic Nature of 78^{78}Ni

    Excited levels were attributed to 3181^{81}_{31}Ga50_{50} for the first time which were fed in the β\beta-decay of its mother nucleus 81^{81}Zn produced in the fission of nat^{nat}U using the ISOL technique.     Partnering in a Pandemic: a Case Study on Designing Teaching and Learning Tools by Undergraduate and Graduate Medical Students with Academic Support

    This case study reflects on the concept of student\u27s-as-partners in a project that took place during the Summer 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, involving nine students from two medical schools in Ireland (University College Dublin (UCD) and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) and makes a pedagogical case for partnership in learning and teaching in medical education. This virtual partnership project lasted three weeks under the supervision of practitioners from the National Maternity Hospital (NMH). The focus of this paper on one output from the project: designing and developing Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) bank. This bank of MCQ questions were written by the students, based on national and international guidelines, then peer reviewed by the students before final review by academic staff and then integrated into the online teaching for the next iteration of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology module in September 2020. The reflections on this MCQ development work provides valuable insights on challenges and opportunities for medical students at both undergraduate and graduate level who are planning for collaborative partnerships as a component of their medical education, as well as academic-practitioners in medical education who are initiating student-staff partnership

    Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Engage Complement and Complement Receptor Bearing Innate Effector Cells to Modulate Immune Responses

    Infusion of human third-party mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) appears to be a promising therapy for acute graft-versus-host disease (aGvHD). To date, little is known about how MSCs interact with the body's innate immune system after clinical infusion. This study shows, that exposure of MSCs to blood type ABO-matched human blood activates the complement system, which triggers complement-mediated lymphoid and myeloid effector cell activation in blood. We found deposition of complement component C3-derived fragments iC3b and C3dg on MSCs and fluid-phase generation of the chemotactic anaphylatoxins C3a and C5a. MSCs bound low amounts of immunoglobulins and lacked expression of complement regulatory proteins MCP (CD46) and DAF (CD55), but were protected from complement lysis via expression of protectin (CD59). Cell-surface-opsonization and anaphylatoxin-formation triggered complement receptor 3 (CD11b/CD18)-mediated effector cell activation in blood. The complement-activating properties of individual MSCs were furthermore correlated with their potency to inhibit PBMC-proliferation in vitro, and both effector cell activation and the immunosuppressive effect could be blocked either by using complement inhibitor Compstatin or by depletion of CD14/CD11b-high myeloid effector cells from mixed lymphocyte reactions. Our study demonstrates for the first time a major role of the complement system in governing the immunomodulatory activity of MSCs and elucidates how complement activation mediates the interaction with other immune cells

    New levels were attributed to 81_31^{81}\_{31}Ga_50\_{50} and 83_32^{83}\_{32}Ge_51\_{51} which were fed by the β\beta-decay of their respective mother nuclei 81_30^{81}\_{30}Zn_51\_{51} and 83_31^{83}\_{31}Ga_52\_{52} produced by fission at the "PARRNe" ISOL set-up installed at the Tandem accelerator of the Institut de Physique Nucl\'eaire, Orsay.     Chronic Kidney Disease and Cognitive Function in Older Adults: Findings from the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort Cognitive Study

    To investigate cognitive impairment in older, ethnically diverse individuals with a broad range of kidney function, to evaluate a spectrum of cognitive domains, and to determine whether the relationship between chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cognitive function is independent of demographic and clinical factors.Cross-sectional.Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort Study.Eight hundred twenty-five adults aged 55 and older with CKD.Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR, mL/min per 1.73 m 2 ) was estimated using the four-variable Modification of Diet in Renal Disease equation. Cognitive scores on six cognitive tests were compared across eGFR strata using linear regression; multivariable logistic regression was used to examine level of CKD and clinically significant cognitive impairment (score ≤1 standard deviations from the mean).Mean age of the participants was 64.9, 50.4% were male, and 44.5% were black. After multivariable adjustment, participants with lower eGFR had lower cognitive scores on most cognitive domains ( P <.05). In addition, participants with advanced CKD (eGFR<30) were more likely to have clinically significant cognitive impairment on global cognition (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 2.0, 95% CI=1.1–3.9), naming (AOR=1.9, 95% CI=1.0–3.3), attention (AOR=2.4, 95% CI=1.3–4.5), executive function (AOR=2.5, 95% CI=1.9–4.4), and delayed memory (AOR=1.5, 95% CI=0.9–2.6) but not on category fluency (AOR=1.1, 95% CI=0.6–2.0) than those with mild to moderate CKD (eGFR 45–59).In older adults with CKD, lower level of kidney function was associated with lower cognitive function on most domains.     The COSMOS-WIRCam near-infrared imaging survey: I: BzK selected passive and star forming galaxy candidates at z>1.4

    (abridged) We present a new near-infrared survey covering the 2 deg sq COSMOS field. Combining our survey with Subaru B and z images we construct a deep, wide-field optical-infrared catalogue. At Ks<23 (AB magnitudes) our survey completeness is greater than 90% and 70% for stars and galaxies respectively and contains 143,466 galaxies and 13,254 stars. At z~2 our catalogues contain 3931 quiescent and 25,757 star-forming BzK-selected galaxies representing the largest and most secure sample of these objects to date. Our counts of quiescent galaxies turns over at Ks~22 an effect which we demonstrate cannot be due to sample incompleteness. In our survey both the number of faint and bright quiescent objects exceeds the predictions of a semi-analytic galaxy formation model, indicating potentially the need for further refinements in the amount of merging and AGN feedback at z~2 in these models. We measure the angular correlation function for each sample and find that at small scales the correlation function for passive BzK galaxies exceeds the clustering of dark matter. We use 30-band photometric redshifts to derive the spatial correlation length and the redshift distributions for each object class. At Ks<22 we find r_0^{\gamma/1.8}=7.0 +/-0.5h^{-1} Mpc for the passive BzK candidates and 4.7+/-0.8h^{-1} Mpc for the star-forming BzK galaxies. Our pBzK galaxies have an average photometric redshift of z_p~1.4, in approximate agreement with the limited spectroscopic information currently available.
