Cooperative learning in higher education: Training in social skills of group work

El aprendizaje cooperativo se presenta como una metodología idónea para abordar el desarrollo de la competencia de trabajo en equipo dentro del proceso enseñanza y aprendizaje universitarios. La experiencia se desarrolló en seis grupos distintos que suman un total de 185 estudiantes de distintos centros y titulaciones de la Universidad del País Vasco (UPV/EHU). Se analizan los resultados obtenidos por esta experiencia mediante un cuestionario que recoge las principales competencias del trabajo en equipo. El análisis de las dimensiones del cuestionario muestra una estructura con dos dimensiones: a. ‘Saber ser/estar’, b. ‘Saber Estar’. Esta estructura es coherente conceptualmente y consistente empíricamente. Asimismo, los resultados obtenidos muestran diferencias apreciables entre ambas dimensiones por lo que cabe afirmar el poder discriminativo de esta estructura dimensional.Cooperative Learning seems to be the right methodology to tackle the development of the teamwork competence inside the process of teaching-learning at the University. The experience was developed in six different groups which add up as 185 students of different faculties and schools of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). The outcome of that experience was analyzed by means of a questionnaire which gathers the main competences of teamwork. The analysis of the dimensions of the questionnaire shows a structure with two dimensions: a. ‘Interpersonal competences’, b. ‘Instrumental competences’. This structure is conceptually coherent and empirically con sistent. Results also show significant differences between both dimensions which may be stating the discriminative power of this dimensional structure.peerReviewe

Los Llanos son bien conocidos por su música, su folclor, sus llaneros y también por su participación en la gesta emancipadora; en cambio son prácticamente desconocidas la estructura y las actividades económicas que se han adelantado a lo largo de varios siglos en esa región (4). Dynamics of carbon formation during the catalytic hydrodeoxygenation of raw bio-oil

The formation, growth and transformation of the carbon residue (coke) deposited on the catalyst during the raw bio-oil hydrodeoxygenation have been studied. These deposits have a great impact on the overall process performance, and they have been formed in accelerated deactivation conditions (450 degrees C, 65 bar, space time of 0.09 g(cat) h g(bio-oil)(-1)) using a continuous fixed bed reactor and a FeMoP/HZSM-5 catalyst. Coke deposition causes partial deactivation of the catalyst, which reaches a pseudosteady state of constant activity and also contant yields of interesting chemicals. The evolution of the coke in the transient state has been studied through temperature-programmed oxidation, Raman spectroscopy and elemental analysis. We have identified three different types of coke, whose composition evolves with time on stream towards condensed and stable structures. The assessment of the evolution of the reaction medium composition and the application of the principal component analysis (PCA) methodology have evidenced that the dynamics of coke have three stages: (1) it is controlled by the thermally-induced deposition of thermal lignin; (2) followed by the interconversion into intermediate coke through aging reactions; and (3) it ends up in a pseudosteady state dominated by the formation of catalytic coke species originating from both deoxygenated and carbonized intermediate coke as well as the condensation of aromatics in the reaction medium.This work has been carried out with the financial support of the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness of the Spanish Government, some co-founded with ERDF funds (CTQ201567425-R, CTQ2016-79646-P), the Basque Government (IT121819), and the European Commission (Horizon H2020-MSCA RISE-2018, Contract No. 823745). Good is stronger than bad for eudaimonic well-being

[ES] Los cambios percibidos en creencias básicas y crecimiento relacionados con los eventos vitales se examinaron en tres estudios. Una muestra representativa (N = 885), una muestra de estudiantes y sus familiares (N = 291) y una de estudiantes (N = 245) respondieron una lista de eventos vitales positivos y negativos, una escala de cambios en creencias básicas y una escala de crecimiento postraumático. Los eventos positivos se asociaron fuertemente con cambios en las creencias básicas, mientras que solo se encontraron asociaciones débiles para los eventos negativos. Además, cambios negativos en las creencias básicas se asociaron con el crecimiento solo en eventos negativos de la vida y los cambios positivos en las creencias básicas se asociaron en general con el crecimiento.[EN] Perceived changes in basic beliefs and growth related to life events were examined in three studies. Network Coding-Based Next-Generation IoT for Industry 4.0

Industry 4.0 has become the main source of applications of the Internet of Things (IoT), which is generating new business opportunities. The use of cloud computing and artificial intelligence is also showing remarkable improvements in industrial operation, saving millions of dollars to manufacturers. The need for time-critical decision-making is evidencing a trade-off between latency and computation, urging Industrial IoT (IIoT) deployments to integrate fog nodes to perform early analytics. In this chapter, we review next-generation IIoT architectures, which aim to meet the requirements of industrial applications, such as low-latency and highly reliable communications. These architectures can be divided into IoT node, fog, and multicloud layers. We describe these three layers and compare their characteristics, providing also different use-cases of IIoT architectures. We introduce network coding (NC) as a solution to meet some of the requirements of next-generation communications. We review a variety of its approaches as well as different scenarios that improve their performance and reliability thanks to this technique. Then, we describe the communication process across the different levels of the architecture based on NC-based state-of-the-art works. Finally, we summarize the benefits and open challenges of combining IIoT architectures together with NC techniques

On the combination of multi-cloud and network coding for cost-efficient storage in industrial applications

The adoption of both Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) and the Internet-of-Things (IoT) has enabled the evolution towards the so-called Industry 4.0. These technologies, together with cloud computing and artificial intelligence, foster new business opportunities. Besides, several industrial applications need immediate decision making and fog computing is emerging as a promising solution to address such requirement. In order to achieve a cost-efficient system, we propose taking advantage from spot instances, a new service offered by cloud providers, which provide resources at lower prices. The main downside of these instances is that they do not ensure service continuity and they might suffer from interruptions. An architecture that combines fog and multi-cloud deployments along with Network Coding (NC) techniques, guarantees the needed fault-tolerance for the cloud environment, and also reduces the required amount of redundant data to provide reliable services. In this paper we analyze how NC can actually help to reduce the storage cost and improve the resource efficiency for industrial applications, based on a multi-cloud infrastructure. The cost analysis has been carried out using both real AWS EC2 spot instance prices and, to complement them, prices obtained from a model based on a finite Markov chain, derived from real measurements. We have analyzed the overall system cost, depending on different parameters, showing that configurations that seek to minimize the storage yield a higher cost reduction, due to the strong impact of storage cost.This work has been partially supported by the Basque Government through the Elkartek program (Grant agreement no.
