Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Jane Austen consumed by her popularity

    Get PDF
This paper presents an analysis of the novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (Seth Grahame-Smith, 2009), a parody of Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice (1813), and the movie with the same title released in 2016. It begins with a reflection about Austen’s popularity through an examination of the current increasing publication of sequels and adaptations of her novels, a phenomenon that, among other consequences, has consolidated an image of her work as naïve love stories for women and the initiator of the modern ‘chick lit’. Next, it moves to the study of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies that includes the origins and entrance into popular culture of the zombie figure and a presentation of some excerpts from this parody in order to observe the changes made to the original and how these changes are related to contemporary values and concepts, which contribute to the weakening of Austen’s work through the erasure of her irony and social criticism. Finally, a brief analysis of the movie will be conducted not only in relation to the original novel and its parody but also to the characteristics expected from the universe built by Austen’s fans

A biased random-key genetic algorithm for the two-stage capacitated facility location problem

Artigo CientíficoThis paper presents a new metaheuristic approach for the two-stage capacitated facility location problem (TSCFLP), which the objective is to minimize the operation costs of the underlying two-stage transportation system, satisfying demand and capacity constraints. In this problem, a single product must be transported from a set of plants to meet customers demands passing out by intermediate depots. Since this problem is known to be NP-hard, approximated methods become an efficient alternative to solve real-industry problems. As far as we know, the TSCFLP is being solved in most cases by hybrid approaches supported by an exact method, and sometimes a commercial solver is used for this purpose. Bearing this in mind, a BRKGA metaheuristic and a new local search for TSCFLP are proposed. It is the first time that BRKGA had been applied to this problem and the computational results show the competitiveness of the approach developed in terms of quality of the solutions and required computational time when compared with those obtained by state-of-the-art heuristics. The approach proposed can be easily coupled in intelligent systems to help organizations enhance competitiveness by optimally placing facilities in order to minimize operational costs.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES

This essay analyzes selected aspects present in narratives of memory from former members of the anarcho-feminist group Mujeres Libres, active during the Spanish Revolution (1936- 1939), in close dialogue with some of the concepts proposed by the philosopher Michel Foucault. Particularly, it focus on his concepts of care of the self, aesthetics of existence and biopolitics to reflect on the actions taken by that group to promote freedom for women. It also discusses themes such as libertarian pedagogy and anarchist culture to understand its proposals for a new ethical construction of libertarian individuals. At the same time, it analyzes the contradictions related to matters such as abortion, maternity and free love, which were highly debated by the Mujeres Libres’ members to promote a true equality between men and women and to face daily resistances present even among the anarchist. It aims to show that the study of this experience from the theoretical framework proposed by Foucault can illuminate different aspects usually ignored of this rich story. Besides, it also shows that the work of the historian itself is radically modified when formulated along with that philosopher’s ideas.O presente artigo analisa alguns aspectos presentes em relatos de memória das ex-militantes do grupo anarco-feminista Mujeres Libres, que esteve ativo durante a Revolução Espanhola (1936- 1939), a partir de conceitos propostos pelo filósofo Michel Foucault.

    Get PDF
Diabetes Mellitus is today a global epidemic, posing a major challenge for health systems around the world. The number of people with diabetes is growing, about 422 million adults worldwide, estimated to reach 642 million in the year 2040, with Diabetes type 1 (DM1) responsible for a 3% increase in cases each year. Portugal, is no exception, and in the last decades, the prevalence of diabetes has increased (WHO, 2016, IDF, 2015, SPD, 2016). Therapeutic goals in diabetes management, including DM1, include, in addition to feeding control, insulin delivery and the adoption of an active lifestyle, literacy and therapeutic education, considered as the process of providing the individual of knowledge, skill and technical capacity, necessary for the promotion of self-care and self-efficacy, recognized as important aspects for better glycemic control, prevention of complications and, above all, better quality of life (WHO, 2016; AAED 2007) . The present study aims to promote self-care and self-efficacy in adults with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, patients at the HDFF Diabetes Day Hospital, for the implementation of an educational intervention. The project involved 20 adults with DM1 undergoing treatment at the HDFF Diabetes Day Hospital with an assessment of diabetes knowledge, self-efficacy levels, and glycated hemoglobin analysis of the participants before and after the three educational sessions implemented. Patients presented good knowledge of diabetes, high levels of self-efficacy and unsatisfactory glycemic control before the sessions. After the end of this project, it was found that the objectives were achieved, since 74% of the users increased their knowledge in diabetes, 74% had improvement in the levels of the global self-efficacy scale and 84% had glycemic control improved. Through the results presented, where knowledge in diabetes and self-efficacy are related to the results of glycated hemoglobin, the project is considered to have a relevant role in the better control of diabetes

This work analises the narratives of memory of some women who participated at the Spanish anarchist and feminist movement of the group ¿Mujeres Libres¿, which was active during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). It focuses on the interviews, books and documentaries that have been produced by these women, especially at the 1980s and 1990s, about those events and their experiences. It asks about how this work of memory happens, which keeps strong marks of the present, and how this memories contribute to the construction of their subjectivities as anarchist women, even fifty years ou more after the defeat to the franquist army in 1939MestradoHistoria CulturalMestre em Históri

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates have been successfully employed in the direct and regioselective arylation of heteroaromatics such as indole, benzofuran and benzothiophene. The cationic aryl palladium intermediates derived from the aryldiazonium salts act as effective electrophiles in the process. These arylating reactions display operational simplicity and provide the arylated heterocycles regioselectively in moderate to excellent yields.2311193011935Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq)Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq

Intelligent approach to solvent substitution : the identification of a new class of levoglucosenone derivatives

    Get PDF
With the increasing restriction and control of hazardous solvents, safer alternatives need to be identified. Here a contemporary approach to solvent selection and substitution is presented that offers a more scientific alternative to the simple “like-for-like” exchange. A new family of levoglucosenonederived compounds is proposed, modeled to determine their solvent properties, synthesized, and tested. These new molecules show promise as replacements for polar aprotic solvents that have chronic toxicity issues, such as dichloromethane, nitrobenzene, and N-methylpyrrolidinone. The success of this approach makes it possible for academia and industry to make calculated, intelligent choices for solvent substitution in the future
