    Simulation de la recharge artificielle de nappe en oued par un modèle à réservoirs

    Dans la zone semi-aride de Tunisie centrale, un grand barrage a été construit en 1982 sur l'oued Zeroud, dont l'infiltration des crues naturelles constituait jadis la principale source d'alimentation des nappes de la plaine de Kairouan. Ce barrage est destiné à l'écrêtement des crues, l'irrigation et à la recharge des nappes à l'aval de la retenue.Entre 1988 et 1996, plus de 70 millions de m3 d'eau ont été mobilisés sous forme d'ondes de lâchers à partir du barrage pour la recharge artificielle par infiltration dans le lit de l'oued. Le suivi des ondes de lâchers est effectué sur 3 stations de contrôle disposées sur une distance de 40 km le long du lit. L'analyse de l'évolution des débits a révélé que la capacité d'infiltration du lit augmente progressivement avant de se stabiliser, mettant en évidence l'effet de l'air sur le processus de recharge.Un modèle conceptuel à réservoirs conjuguant fonctions de production et de transfert avec discrétisation spatiale a permis de modéliser la propagation et l'infiltration des ondes de lâchers le long de l'oued. Son ajustement sur un échantillon de six événements de lâchers a fourni des résultats satisfaisants. Même si la validation reste insuffisante en raison de la rareté des données, ce modèle peut constituer un premier outil d'évaluation de l'efficacité de la recharge et de prédiction de son impact sur la nappe souterraine de la plaine de Kairouan.In semi-arid central Tunisia, flood infiltration through the streambed of the ephemeral Zeroud Wadi has long been the principal mechanism of recharging aquifers beneath the plains of the city of Kairouan. In addition to controlling infiltration, a dam built on the Zeroud in 1982 to supply water to Kairouan also protects the city from floods.From 1988 to 1996 over 70 million cubic meters of dam-held water were mobilized in the form of flood waves over the stream channel to recharge the Kairouan aquifers. Analysis of flow discharges measured at three control stations spanning 40 km of the stream reveals that infiltration is reduced during initial flood-wave spreading and increases gradually before stabilizing. The differential rate of infiltration is thought to be caused by interstitial air initially present.A conceptual reservoir model based on production and transfer functions with spatial discretization was used to simulate flood-wave propagation and infiltration along the Zeroud. After calibration with six flood events the model produced satisfactory results. Though current data scarcity prevents its validation, the model constitutes a prototype for the evaluation of recharge efficiency and for the prediction of recharge impact on Kairouan aquifers

    Composición en ácidos grasos de fosfolípidos y triacilgliceroles de la carne del salmonete gris de labios gruesos (Chelon labrosus) que vive en agua geotérmica y agua de mar tunecina: un estudio comparativo

    This study was conducted to elucidate the effects of rearing conditions on the composition of different phospholipid (PLs) classes and triacylglycerols (TAG) of the thick-lipped grey mullet (Chelon labrosus), a muscle originating from seawater and geothermal water. The major fatty acids in the examined lipid classes of the two fish groups were palmitic acid (C16:0), stearic acid (C18:0), oleic acid (C18:1n-9), linoleic acid (C18:2n-6), arachidonic acid (C20:4n-6), eicosapentaenoic acid (C20:5n-3), and docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6n-3). The analyses demonstrated that the fatty acid profiles of the PL classes in the seawater fish group were characterized by the predominance of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). By contrast, in geothermal fish, the distribution of PUFA series proportions differed between the phospholipid fractions. It was found PUFA n-3 was particularly abundant in PS and PI, while the n-6 series dominated the PC and PE PUFA group. Nonetheless, it was found that neutral lipid fatty acids were characterized by saturated fatty acids (SFA) followed by monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) in the seawater fish and by PUFA in the geothermal fish. The results presented here give useful information on the role of lipid classes in the physiological adaptation of C. labrosus which can serve for the optiminzation of these aquaculture systems.Este estudio se llevó a cabo para dilucidar los efectos de las condiciones de cría sobre la composición de diferentes clases de fosfolípidos (PL) y triacilgliceroles (TAG) del músculo de salmonetes de labios gruesos (Chelon labrosus) procedentes de agua de mar y de agua geotérmica. Los principales ácidos grasos en las clases de lípidos examinados de los dos grupos de peces fueron, palmítico (C16:0), esteárico (C18:0), oleico (C18:1n-9), linoleico (C18:2n-6), araquidónico (C20:4n-6), eicosapentaenoico (C20:5n-3) y ácido docosahexaenoico (C22:6n-3). Las determinaciones mostraron que los perfiles de ácidos grasos de los PL, en el grupo de peces de agua de mar, se caracterizaron por el predominio de ácidos grasos poliinsaturados n-3 (PUFA). Por el contrario, en los peces geotérmicos, la distribución de las proporciones de las series de PUFA difirió entre las fracciones de fosfolípidos. Se encontró que los PUFA n-3 eran particularmente abundantes en PS y PI, mientras que la serie n-6 dominaba el grupo de PUFA PC y PE. No obstante, se encontró que en lipidos neutros, los mayoritarios son los ácidos grasos saturados (SFA) seguidos de los ácidos grasos monoinsaturados (MUFA) en el pescado de agua de mar y los PUFA en el pescado geotérmico. Los resultados actuales brindan información útil sobre el papel de las clases de lípidos en la adaptación fisiológica de C. labrosus que puede servir para la optimización de estos sistemas de acuicultura

    Évaluation des transferts entre barrage et aquifères par la méthode de bilan d'une retenue en zone semi-aride. Cas d'El Haouareb en Tunisie centrale

    Le barrage d'El Haouareb est situé en Tunisie centrale, dans une zone caractérisée par un climat semi-aride. Il draine le bassin versant de l'oued Merguellil d'une superficie d'environ 1 200 km2. Le but de cette recherche est d'évaluer, à partir du bilan du barrage, l'impact de la mise en place de cet ouvrage sur les ressources en eau de surface et souterraine, en vue de mieux cerner le fonctionnement de l'ensemble de ce système et faciliter ainsi sa gestion.Le bilan en eau de surface fait appel à deux termes non mesurés : l'infiltration à travers la cuvette de la retenue et les apports des oueds incomplètement contrôlés. Par une méthodologie originale, nous avons modélisé et calculé l'infiltration. Les apports journaliers au barrage, déduits du bilan ont été ensuite validés par comparaison aux débits mesurés sur une station située, plus en amont, sur le tributaire principal.Cette recherche a mis en évidence que, malgré des pertes non négligeables par évaporation (25% des apports), l'infiltration constitue, de loin, le terme le plus important du bilan de la retenue d'El Haouareb (63% des apports).Cette dernière a ainsi injecté, directement ou par nappe interposée, dans l'aquifère aval de la plaine de Kairouan plus de 9 millions de m3 par an.The El Haouareb dam and the neighbouring dams (Nebhana and Sidi Saâd) were constructed with the objective of protecting the inhabitants of the Kairouan plain from floods. This area constitutes the natural downstream region of three principal wadis of central Tunisia (Merguellil, Nebhana and Zeroud) where there have been floods in the past. The second objective of this dam is to control the recharge of the Kairouan groundwater aquifer in the absence of natural wadi flows, by diverting flows from the dam and by infiltration through the foundation and basin of the dam. In a semi-arid region characterized by very strong evaporation and plant transpiration rates (about 1700 mm per year), it is obviously of great importance to recharge the underground water systems, which are less subject to these kinds of losses and which better preserve the water resources. The last objective of this dam is to supply water to the population, especially for agricultural needs. The dam was expected to supply water to an irrigated area of about 2500 hectares in this region. During the construction of the El Haouareb dam spillway, underground flows occurred in the limestone of the El Haouareb Hill. At the beginning of the exploitation of the dam these underground flows increased. This development has affected the management plans for the dam and accordingly a monitoring program has been put in place to follow of the evolution over time of the infiltration. The purpose of this research was to evaluate, by the water balance method, the impact of the construction of this dam on surface and ground water. This research will improve the understanding of the system, and thus, facilitate management. In addition, this project will evaluate recharge rates towards the groundwater reserves of the Kairouan plain, which constitutes the natural downstream region of this system.The dam is situated at an interface of several superficial and underground hydraulic systems. For surface water, the El Haouareb dam drains the Merguellil wadi catchment whose surface area is about 1200 km2. Besides the Merguellil wadi, two of its tributaries flow directly into the El Haouareb dam (Hammam and Ben Zitoune wadis) but without any measurement of their flows. Nevertheless, two hydrometric stations were established on the Merguellil wadi, upstream of El Haouareb dam: Haffouz in 1966 and Sidi Boujdaria in 1974. The first station is still functional whereas the second one stopped working in 1989. For underground systems, the Aïn Baïdha groundwater located upstream from the dam, and the downstream groundwater of the Kairouan plain constitute the principal aquifers in relation to this dam. A third aquifer of the El Haouareb hill, composed mainly of limestone, was also identified. It receives both Aïn Baïdha groundwater and infiltrations from the El Haouareb dam, and empties towards the groundwater of the Kairouan plain. A daily database of El Haouareb dam management, collected by the agricultural ministry, was available. The data-base contained the following elements: rainfall amounts for the site; water levels in the dam; evaporation rates measured by a Colorado tub; three states of the physical characteristics of dam measured before the beginning of exploitation (1989) and during two drying times of the dam (1994 and 1997); releases from the dam for irrigation; releases from the dam to fight against siltation of the dam and to recharge the Kairouan plain aquifer. There were also rain data measured from the surrounding rain gages and hydrometric data observed at the Haffouz and Sidi Boujdaria stations. The water balance equation of this dam presents two unknowns: the infiltration from the dam and the flows that arrive in the dam by wadis. To resolve these unknowns, we proceeded by minimizing one of the two unknowns with a goal to determine the other one.As infiltration rates were inaccessible, we worked on periods without flows, chosen according to four criteria. During these periods the rain on the dam and on the surrounding rain gages must be equal to 0 mm, the flows measured at the upstream station of Haffouz must be inferior or equal to 50 L/s, and the variation of the water level in the dam must always be decreasing. Finally, the fourth criterion is that the length of these periods that must be equal or greater than 15 d. Thus we were able to calculate the infiltration flows during the periods without flows. These values were corrected by adding the low water flows, which were assumed to arrive at the dam. These flows were calculated by a linear equation established between the low water flows at the Haffouz and Sidi Boujdaria stations. The representation of this calculated infiltration according to the water level in the dam gave a cluster of points from which three simple linear adjustments were done. Thus, we obtained a model composed of three linear equations that represented the changes in infiltration as a function of time. This model showed that the infiltration flow ratecorresponding to a particular level, decreased with time as sedimentation in the dam proceeded. For the daily average level (206 meters), the infiltration rate passed from 650 L/s in 1989 to 310 L/s in 1998.Despite the scarcity of "periods without flows" between 1989 and 1991, and some uncertainties due essentially to the measurement of water levels in the dam, this model is representative of reality because it takes into account the evolution of sedimentation in the dam. The model yielded infiltration flow rates that were higher than those calculated in preceding studies. The infiltration model obtained was then applied to the entire period of study, allowing resolution of the water balance equation for the dam (which now has only one unknown): the flows of the different wadis arriving in the dam.In conclusion, this research showed that despite considerable losses by evaporation (25% of flows), infiltration (accounting for 63% of flows) constituted the more important term in the water balance of the El Haouareb dam. This dam has thus injected, directly or via the interposed limestone aquifer, more than 9 million m3 per year into the downstream groundwater of the Kairouan plain

    Social welfare and profit maximization from revealed preferences

    Consider the seller's problem of finding optimal prices for her nn (divisible) goods when faced with a set of mm consumers, given that she can only observe their purchased bundles at posted prices, i.e., revealed preferences. We study both social welfare and profit maximization with revealed preferences. Although social welfare maximization is a seemingly non-convex optimization problem in prices, we show that (i) it can be reduced to a dual convex optimization problem in prices, and (ii) the revealed preferences can be interpreted as supergradients of the concave conjugate of valuation, with which subgradients of the dual function can be computed. We thereby obtain a simple subgradient-based algorithm for strongly concave valuations and convex cost, with query complexity O(m2/ϵ2)O(m^2/\epsilon^2), where ϵ\epsilon is the additive difference between the social welfare induced by our algorithm and the optimum social welfare. We also study social welfare maximization under the online setting, specifically the random permutation model, where consumers arrive one-by-one in a random order. For the case where consumer valuations can be arbitrary continuous functions, we propose a price posting mechanism that achieves an expected social welfare up to an additive factor of O(mn)O(\sqrt{mn}) from the maximum social welfare. Finally, for profit maximization (which may be non-convex in simple cases), we give nearly matching upper and lower bounds on the query complexity for separable valuations and cost (i.e., each good can be treated independently)

    Size-dependent infrared properties of MgO nanoparticles with evidence of screening effect

    We have investigated the infrared (IR) absorption properties of MgO nanoparticles (NPs) with the means of molecular dynamics simulations. Several size effects have been observed. We show in particular that the absorption of IR radiation does not occur predominantly through the polariton mode but preferentially through surface modes. This enhanced surface absorption is found to result from the absence of dielectric screening of the first atomic layer of the NPs. We demonstrate concomitantly that a macroscopic description of electrodynamics is inadequate to capture these unusual IR properties

    Pedestrian detection in far-infrared daytime images using a hierarchical codebook of SURF

    One of the main challenges in intelligent vehicles concerns pedestrian detection for driving assistance. Recent experiments have showed that state-of-the-art descriptors provide better performances on the far-infrared (FIR) spectrum than on the visible one, even in daytime conditions, for pedestrian classification. In this paper, we propose a pedestrian detector with on-board FIR camera. Our main contribution is the exploitation of the specific characteristics of FIR images to design a fast, scale-invariant and robust pedestrian detector. Our system consists of three modules, each based on speeded-up robust feature (SURF) matching. The first module allows generating regions-of-interest (ROI), since in FIR images of the pedestrian shapes may vary in large scales, but heads appear usually as light regions. ROI are detected with a high recall rate with the hierarchical codebook of SURF features located in head regions. The second module consists of pedestrian full-body classification by using SVM. This module allows one to enhance the precision with low computational cost. In the third module, we combine the mean shift algorithm with inter-frame scale-invariant SURF feature tracking to enhance the robustness of our system. The experimental evaluation shows that our system outperforms, in the FIR domain, the state-of-the-art Haar-like Adaboost-cascade, histogram of oriented gradients (HOG)/linear SVM (linSVM) and MultiFtrpedestrian detectors, trained on the FIR images

    Chemical properties of 11 date cultivars and their corresponding fiber extracts

    Date palm fruit from 11 Tunisian cultivars (Phoenix dactylifera L.) were analyzed for their main chemical composition. Results showed that date fruits were rich in sugar (79.93 - 88.02 g/100 g dry matter), fiber(8.09 - 20.25 g/100 g dry matter) and ash (1.73 - 2.59 g/100 g dry matter). Mineral fraction was dominated by potassium and sugar fraction was dominated by reducing sugar (glucose, fructose) except for Deglet Nour, Kentichi and Bajo which are rich in sucrose. Date fiber concentrates (DFC) were extracted and analyzed for their proximate content (moisture, fiber, protein, lipid and ash) and some functional properties such as water holding capacity (WHC) and oil holding capacity (OHC). DFC presented high dietary fiber content (90.71 - 93.92 g/100g dry matter). Protein and lipid contents (dry matter basis) ranged between 3.66 and 6.06 g/100 g and between 0.35 and 1.08 g/100 g, respectively. DFC presentedhigh WHC (6.20 g water/g dry fiber) and high OHC (1.80 g oil/g dry fiber). Results showed that dates could be a valuable source of highly techno-functional fibers that could be used in food formulations
