    Emotional competence and prosocial skills in children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

    openIl Disturbo da Deficit di Attenzione e Iperattività (ADHD) ha carattere pervasivo, ovvero compromette il funzionamento della sfera familiare, scolastica e sociale del bambino (Di Pietro & Bassi, 2013). In particolare, i bambini con questo disturbo sembrano avere difficoltà nel riconoscere e regolare le emozioni e tendono a mettere in atto minori comportamenti prosociali rispetto ai bambini senza diagnosi. Lo scopo della presente ricerca, dunque, risulta essere quello di approfondire la competenza emotiva e le abilità prosociali dei bambini con diagnosi di ADHD, confrontando un gruppo sperimentale di 10 bambini e adolescenti con diagnosi tra gli 8 e i 16 anni, con un gruppo di controllo di 10 bambini senza diagnosi (SD), appaiati per genere, età e funzionamento cognitivo. Al fine di indagare tali costrutti, sono stati proposti una prova computerizzata creata ad hoc, e alcuni questionari, somministrati sia bambini che ai genitori, al fine di indagare i comportamenti prosociali e la competenza emotiva. Si ipotizza che, in linea con quanto riportato in letteratura, confrontati con il gruppo SD, i bambini con ADHD presenteranno scarse competenze emotive e minori abilità prosociali. Infine, ci si aspetta una discrepanza, tra la versione somministrata ai genitori e quella compilata dai bambini, del questionario indagante le abilità prosociali, in quanto si ipotizza che i bambini con ADHD tendano a sovrastimare le proprie abilità nella performance sociale. Verranno discussi i risultati e le implicazioni cliniche.Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has a pervasive character, i.e. it impairs the child's family, school and social functioning (Di Pietro & Bassi, 2013). In particular, children with this disorder seem to have difficulties in recognising and regulating emotions and tend to engage in less prosocial behaviour than children without a diagnosis. The aim of the present research, therefore, is to investigate the emotional competence and prosocial skills of children with a diagnosis of ADHD, comparing an experimental group of 10 children and adolescents with a diagnosis between the ages of 8 and 16 years, with a control group of 10 children without a diagnosis (SD), matched for gender, age and cognitive functioning. In order to investigate these constructs, an ad-hoc computerised test and questionnaires, administered to both children and parents, were proposed to investigate prosocial behaviour and emotional competence. It is hypothesised that, in line with what is reported in the literature, compared with the SD group, children with ADHD will have poorer emotional skills and lower prosocial skills. Finally, it is expected that there will be a discrepancy between the version administered to the parents and the one completed by the children, of the questionnaire investigating prosocial skills, as it is hypothesised that children with ADHD tend to overestimate their social performance skills. The results and clinical implications will be discussed

    The EuroLifeNet Study: How Different Microenvironments Influence Personal Exposure to PM 2.5 among High-School Students in Milan A. Borgini et al

    Abstract Background: Epidemiological studies show that long-term exposure to PM is associated with an increased risk of cancer. The EuroLifeNet study measured the personal exposure to PM 2.5 in 90 pupils attending three schools in Milan, using a portable nephelometer, over a three-week period spanning November and December 2006. Background levels explained 40% of the variability of the exposure. Methods: As a second part of that study we analyzed the role of different microenvironments as determinants of personal exposure to PM 2.5 . Results: Exposure was influenced by the time of day, zone of the city and different microenvironments. Exposure was higher indoors than out, and indoors it was higher in the kitchen, particularly during cooking. In outdoor environments exposure was higher at bus stops where road traffic was heavy. Conclusions: Even though background concentration can be a good predictor of personal exposure to PM, students' personal exposure is strongly influenced by different microenvironments and should be considered in population studies. The EuroLifeNet experience gives a contribution to personal exposure measure methodology

    Measurements of Particulate Matter from Electronic and Conventional Cigarettes: A Comparative Analysis of Methods

    Due to the growing popularity of electronic cigarettes (ECs) and heated tobacco products (HTPs) as alternatives to conventional cigarettes (CCs), there is an increasing need to monitor the emissions of these new devices. ECs generate significant concentrations of second-hand aerosol (ECSHA), which is visible in dense clouds and can be smelled. Particulate matter (PM) is an important component of CC, HTP and EC aerosols, and Optical Particle Counters (OPCs) enable its real-time measurement, which is expressed either as the number of particles or as mass. This study specifically addresses the limitations associated with EC mass measurement using OPC technology and identifies the strict necessity of the measurement of a corresponding density (k factor) not only for each specific PM source but also for the desired PM size. Therefore, a standard measurement requires the simultaneous operation of the OPC equipment and a certified reference instrument. Four different OPCs were used. Crucially, this study also proves that this setup may be inapplicable because the extreme volatility of EC-generated aerosols makes it impractical to gauge the correct EC k factor

    Subjective Symptoms in Magnetic Resonance Imaging Personnel: A Multi-Center Study in Italy

    Introduction: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) personnel have significant exposure to static and low-frequency time-varying magnetic fields. In these workers an increased prevalence of different subjective symptoms has been observed. The aim of our study was to investigate the prevalence of non-specific subjective symptoms and of “core symptoms” in a group of MRI personnel working in different centers in Italy, and of possible relationships with personal and occupational characteristics.Methods: The occurrence of 11 subjective symptoms was evaluated using a specific questionnaire with 240 subjects working in 6 different Italian hospitals and research centers, 177 MRI health care and research personnel and 63 unexposed subjects employed in the same departments. Exposure was subjectively investigated according to the type of MRI scanner (≤1.5 vs. ≥3 T) and to the number of MRI procedures attended and/or performed by the personnel, even if no information on how frequently the personnel entered the scanner room was collected. The possible associations among symptoms and estimated EMF exposure, the main characteristics of the population, and job stress perception were analyzed.Results: Eighty-six percent of the personnel reported at least one symptom; drowsiness, headache, and sleep disorders were the most frequent. The total number of symptoms did not differ between exposed persons and controls. Considering the total number of annual MRI procedures reported by the personnel, no significant associations were found nor with the total number of symptoms, nor with “core symptoms.” Only subjects complaining of drowsiness also reported a significantly higher mean annual number of MRI procedures with ≤ 1.5 T scanners when compared with exposed subjects without drowsiness. In a multivariate model, subjects with a high level of perceived stress complained of more symptoms (p = 0.0002).Conclusions: Our study did not show any association between the occurrence of reversible subjective symptoms, including the more specific “core symptoms,” and the occupational exposure of MRI personnel to static and low-frequency time-varying magnetic fields. On the other hand, the role played by occupational stress appears to be not negligible. In further research in this field, measurements of EMF exposure should be considered

    Gas and dust cooling along the major axis of M 33 (HerM33es). Herschel/PACS [C II] and [O I] observations

M 33 is a gas rich spiral galaxy of the Local Group. Its vicinity allows us to study its interstellar medium (ISM) on linear scales corresponding to the sizes of individual giant molecular clouds. Aims. We investigate the relationship between the two major gas cooling lines and the total infrared (TIR) dust continuum. Methods. We mapped the emission of gas and dust in M 33 using the far-infrared lines of [CII] and [OI](63 mu m) and the total infrared continuum. The line maps were observed with the PACS spectrometer on board the Herschel Space Observatory. These maps have 50 pc resolution and form a similar to 370 pc wide stripe along its major axis covering the sites of bright HII regions, but also more quiescent arm and inter-arm regions from the southern arm at 2 kpc galacto-centric distance to the south out to 5.7 kpc distance to the north. Full-galaxy maps of the continuum emission at 24 mu m from Spitzer/MIPS, and at 70 mu m, 100 mu m, and 160 mu m from Herschel/PACS were combined to obtain a map of the TIR. Results. TIR and [CII] intensities are correlated over more than two orders of magnitude. The range of TIR translates to a range of far ultraviolet (FUV) emission of G(0, obs)similar to 2 to 200 in units of the average Galactic radiation field. The binned [CII]/TIR ratio drops with rising TIR, with large, but decreasing scatter. The contribution of the cold neutral medium to the [CII] emission, as estimated from VLA HI data, is on average only 10%. Fits of modified black bodies to the continuum emission were used to estimate dust mass surface densities and total gas column densities. A correction for possible foreground absorption by cold gas was applied to the [OI] data before comparing it with models of photon dominated regions. Most of the ratios of [CII]/[OI] and ([CII]+[OI])/TIR are consistent with two model solutions. The median ratios are consistent with one solution at n similar to 2x10(2) cm(-3), G(0)similar to 60, and a second low-FUV solution at n similar to 10(4) cm(-3), G(0)similar to 1.5. Conclusions. The bulk of the gas along the lines-of-sight is represented by a low-density, high-FUV phase with low beam filling factors similar to 1. A fraction of the gas may, however, be represented by the second solution. © C.     Particulate matter in aerosols produced by two last generation electronic cigarettes: a comparison in a real-world environment

    The design of e-cigarettes (e-cigs) is constantly evolving and the latest models can aerosolize using high-power sub-ohm resistance and hence may produce specific particle concentrations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the aerosol characteristics generated by two different types of electronic cigarette in real-world conditions, such as a sitting room or a small office, in number of particles (particles/cm3). We compared the real time and time-integrated measurements of the aerosol generated by the e-cigarette types Just Fog and JUUL. Real time (10 s average) number of particles (particles/cm3) in 8 different aerodynamic sizes was measured using an optical particle counter (OPC) model Profiler 212-2. Tests were conducted with and without a Heating, Ventilating Air Conditioning System (HVACS) in operation, in order to evaluate the efficiency of air filtration. During the vaping sessions the OPC recorded quite significant increases in number of particles/cm3. The JUUL e-cig produced significantly lower emissions than Just Fog with and without the HVACS in operation. The study demonstrates the rapid volatility or change from liquid or semi-liquid to gaseous status of the e-cig aerosols, with half-life in the order of a few seconds (min. 4.6, max 23.9), even without the HVACS in operation.     Exposure to secondhand and thirdhand smoke in private vehicles: Measurements in air and dust samples

    Background: This study aimed to estimate airborne nicotine concentrations and nicotine, cotinine, and tobaccospecific nitrosamines (TSNAs) in settled dust from private cars in Spain and the UK. Methods: We measured vapor-phase nicotine concentrations in a convenience sample of 45 private cars from Spain (N = 30) and the UK (N = 15) in 2017-2018. We recruited non-smoking drivers (n = 20), smoking drivers who do not smoke inside the car (n = 15), and smoking drivers who smoke inside (n = 10). Nicotine, cotinine, and three TSNAs (NNK, NNN, NNA) were also measured in settled dust in a random subsample (n = 20). We computed medians and interquartile ranges (IQR) of secondhand smoke (SHS) and thirdhand smoke (THS) compounds according to the drivers' profile.
