Towards a Topology-Shape-Metrics Framework for Ortho-Radial Drawings
Ortho-Radial drawings are a generalization of orthogonal drawings to grids that are formed by concentric circles and straight-line spokes emanating from the circles\u27 center. Such drawings have applications in schematic graph layouts, e.g., for metro maps and destination maps.
A plane graph is a planar graph with a fixed planar embedding. We give a combinatorial characterization of the plane graphs that admit a planar ortho-radial drawing without bends. Previously, such a characterization was only known for paths, cycles, and theta graphs, and in the special case of rectangular drawings for cubic graphs, where the contour of each face is required to be a rectangle.
The characterization is expressed in terms of an ortho-radial representation that, similar to Tamassia\u27s orthogonal representations for orthogonal drawings describes such a drawing combinatorially in terms of angles around vertices and bends on the edges. In this sense our characterization can be seen as a first step towards generalizing the Topology-Shape-Metrics framework of Tamassia to ortho-radial drawings
Seebeck coefficients of half-metallic ferromagnets
In this report the Co2 based Heusler compounds are discussed as potential
materials for spin voltage generation. The compounds were synthesized by
arcmelting and consequent annealing. Band structure calculations were performed
and revealed the compounds to be half-metallic ferromagnets. Magnetometry was
performed on the samples and the Curie temperatures and the magnetic moments
were determined. The Seebeck coefficients were measured from low to ambient
temperatures for all compounds. For selected compounds high temperature

Portfolio Analysis Tool
Portfolio Analysis Tool (PAT) is a Web-based, client/server computer program that helps managers of multiple projects funded by different customers to make decisions regarding investments in those projects. PAT facilitates analysis on a macroscopic level, without distraction by parochial concerns or tactical details of individual projects, so that managers decisions can reflect the broad strategy of their organization. PAT is accessible via almost any Web-browser software. Experts in specific projects can contribute to a broad database that managers can use in analyzing the costs and benefits of all projects, but do not have access for modifying criteria for analyzing projects: access for modifying criteria is limited to managers according to levels of administrative privilege. PAT affords flexibility for modifying criteria for particular "focus areas" so as to enable standardization of criteria among similar projects, thereby making it possible to improve assessments without need to rewrite computer code or to rehire experts, and thereby further reducing the cost of maintaining and upgrading computer code. Information in the PAT database and results of PAT analyses can be incorporated into a variety of ready-made or customizable tabular or graphical displays
Health Risk of Obesity in Native American Adolescents
Recent reports demonstrate the need to improve methods for identifying obesity among adolescent minority populations, especially among Native American adolescents. Our study examined several anthropometric measures to see which one was the best indicator of obesity for Native American adolescents. We compared our data with that provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANESIII). We examined which measures diï¬ered signiï¬cantly from the NHANESIII, and which were most eï¬ective for measuring obesity in Native American adolescents. Our study population represented a cross-sectional, epidemiological population (N=183) of Native American students (ages 14-18) from diverse tribal backgrounds at an urban residential high school. We obtained baseline anthropometric measurements of height, weight, waist, triceps skin-fold, and calf skin-fold measures from the Native American students and compared this information with reference data to assess weight classiï¬cation by body mass indices for our population. Under the conditions of our study, we found the calf skin-fold measure to be the best indicator of normal weight in male Native American adolescents, and the triceps skin-fold measure to be the best indicator of obesity in male Native American adolescents. The assessment of health risk by anthropometric measures we obtained appears appropriate for predicting obesity and developing eï¬ective interventions for Native American adolescents in general. Correlations between anthropometric measures and obesity in our study population may prove of signiï¬cant interest for monitoring obesity prevention initiatives for Native American adolescents
ALMA Observations of Circumnuclear Disks in Early Type Galaxies: 12CO(2-1) and Continuum Properties
We present results from an Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array
(ALMA) Cycle 2 program to map CO(2-1) emission in nearby early-type galaxies
(ETGs) that host circumnuclear gas disks. We obtained resolution
Band 6 observations of seven ETGs selected on the basis of dust disks in Hubble
Space Telescope images. We detect CO emission in five at high signal-to-noise
ratio with the remaining two only faintly detected. All CO emission is
coincident with the dust and is in dynamically cold rotation. Four ETGs show
evidence of rapid central rotation; these are prime candidates for
higher-resolution ALMA observations to measure the black hole masses. In this
paper we focus on the molecular gas and continuum properties. Total gas masses
and H column densities for our five CO-bright galaxies are on average
and cm over the kpc-scale
disks, and analysis suggests that these disks are stabilized against
gravitational fragmentation. The continuum emission of all seven galaxies is
dominated by a central, unresolved source, and in five we also detect a
spatially extended component. The 230 GHz nuclear continua are modeled as
power laws ranging from to within the
observed frequency band. The extended continuum profiles of the two
radio-bright (and CO-faint) galaxies are roughly aligned with their radio jet
and suggests resolved synchrotron jets. The extended continua of the CO-bright
disks are coincident with optically thick dust absorption and have spectral

Bulk sensitive photo emission spectroscopy of C1b compounds
This work reports about bulk-sensitive, high energy photoelectron
spectroscopy from the valence band of CoTiSb excited by photons from 1.2 to 5
keV energy. The high energy photoelectron spectra were taken at the KMC-1 high
energy beamline of BESSY II employing the recently developed Phoibos 225 HV
analyser. The measurements show a good agreement to calculations of the
electronic structure using the LDA scheme. It is shown that the high energy
spectra reveal the bulk electronic structure better compared to low energy XPS

Range Process Simulation Tool
Range Process Simulation Tool (RPST) is a computer program that assists managers in rapidly predicting and quantitatively assessing the operational effects of proposed technological additions to, and/or upgrades of, complex facilities and engineering systems such as the Eastern Test Range. Originally designed for application to space transportation systems, RPST is also suitable for assessing effects of proposed changes in industrial facilities and large organizations. RPST follows a model-based approach that includes finite-capacity schedule analysis and discrete-event process simulation. A component-based, scalable, open architecture makes RPST easily and rapidly tailorable for diverse applications. Specific RPST functions include: (1) definition of analysis objectives and performance metrics; (2) selection of process templates from a processtemplate library; (3) configuration of process models for detailed simulation and schedule analysis; (4) design of operations- analysis experiments; (5) schedule and simulation-based process analysis; and (6) optimization of performance by use of genetic algorithms and simulated annealing. The main benefits afforded by RPST are provision of information that can be used to reduce costs of operation and maintenance, and the capability for affordable, accurate, and reliable prediction and exploration of the consequences of many alternative proposed decisions
Religious Language as Poetry: Heidegger's Challenge.
This paper examines how Heidegger’s view that language is poetry provides a way of conceptualising religious language. Poetry, according to Heidegger, is language in its purest form, in that it reveals Being, whilst also showing the difference between word and thing. In poetry, Heidegger suggests, we come closest to the essence of language itself and encounter its strangeness and impermeability. What would be the implications of viewing religious language in this way? Through examining Heidegger’s view that poetry is the purest form of language, I suggest that it would also be possible to view religious language as ‘poetry’ in this way, in that it also shows the transcendence of what cannot be brought to presence in language, except as concealed. Such a view of religious language leads to the view that it is not a special, unique or distinctive category of language, but rather a mode of language that, like poetry, can draw our attention to the inarticulable relationship between word and world that Heidegger argues pervades all forms of language
