Structured Rehabilitation Exercise Program in Parkinson’s Disease
Title of the article: A Study of structured rehabilitationexercise program in Parkinson’s diseaseContext: There is a growing need to address rehabilitationissues to supplement medical therapy.Aims: To assess the impact of rehabilitation interventionin the functional status and quality of life in patients withParkinson’s disease.Settings and Design: Prospective follow-up study in ateaching hospitalMaterials and Methods: Twenty-eight cases withParkinson’s Disease on a stable pharmacological regimenand moderately disabled participated in this study. Allpatients were given the same set of exercises. Duringthe first month, patients performed exercises undersupervision at the hospital and rest of the days at home.In the second and third month, patients continued thesame exercises at home. During the fourth month, patientsmaintained their usual level of physical activity butdiscontinued the exercises. All patients were evaluatedat 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 months. Outcome measures used wereUnified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS)version 3.0, Webster step seconds product, andParkinson’s Disease Quality of Life Questionnaire(PDQL)Results: Significant improvements were observed inUPDRS section 1 (Mentation, behavior and mood),sections 2 and 6 (Activities of Daily Living), PDQLsubscales (parkinsonian symptoms, systemic symptomsand social functioning), and Webster step-seconds product. Conclusions: Systematic program of physical therapy isbeneficial in patients suffering from moderately disabledParkinson’s disease. Activities of daily living like dressing, turning in bed and walking respond favorably to exercises.Quality of life improves considerably following exercisesleading to increased social participatio
Femtosecond nonlinear ultrasonics in gold probed with ultrashort surface plasmons
Fundamental interactions induced by lattice vibrations on ultrafast time
scales become increasingly important for modern nanoscience and technology.
Experimental access to the physical properties of acoustic phonons in the THz
frequency range and over the entire Brillouin zone is crucial for understanding
electric and thermal transport in solids and their compounds. Here, we report
on the generation and nonlinear propagation of giant (1 percent) acoustic
strain pulses in hybrid gold/cobalt bilayer structures probed with ultrafast
surface plasmon interferometry. This new technique allows for unambiguous
characterization of arbitrary ultrafast acoustic transients. The giant acoustic
pulses experience substantial nonlinear reshaping already after a propagation
distance of 100 nm in a crystalline gold layer. Excellent agreement with the
Korteveg-de Vries model points to future quantitative nonlinear femtosecond

Observation of chi_c2 Production in B-meson Decay
We report the first observation of chi_c2 production in B-meson decays. We
find an inclusive B -> chi_c2 X branching fraction of (1.80^{+0.23}_{-0.28}+/-
0.26) 10^-3. The data set, collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e^+e^-
collider, consists of 31.9 million B\bar B events. We also present branching
fractions and momentum spectra for both chi_c1 and chi_c2 production.Comment: 5 pages with 2 figure
Measurement of B0d - B0d-bar mixing rate from the time evolution of dilepton events at the Upsilon(4S)
We report a determination of the B0d - B0d-bar mixing parameter Delta-m_d
based on the time evolution of dilepton yields in Upsilon(4S) decays. The
measurement is based on a 5.9 /fb data sample collected by the Belle detector
at KEKB. The proper-time difference distributions for same-sign and
opposite-sign dilepton events are simultaneously fitted to an expression
containing Delta-m_d as a free parameter. Using both muons and electrons, we
obtain Delta-m_d = 0.463 +- 0.008(stat.) +- 0.016(sys.) ps^{-1} This is the
first determination of Delta-m_d from time evolution measurements at the
Upsilon(4S). We also place limits on possible CPT violations.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure
Combined search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a bb pair using the full CDF data set
We combine the results of searches for the standard model Higgs boson based
on the full CDF Run II data set obtained from sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV p-pbar
collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron corresponding to an integrated luminosity
of 9.45/fb. The searches are conducted for Higgs bosons that are produced in
association with a W or Z boson, have masses in the range 90-150 GeV/c^2, and
decay into bb pairs. An excess of data is present that is inconsistent with the
background prediction at the level of 2.5 standard deviations (the most
significant local excess is 2.7 standard deviations).Comment: To be published in Phys. Rev. Lett (v2 contains minor updates based
on comments from PRL
Observation of Mixing-induced CP Violation in the Neutral B Meson System
This report describes an observation of mixing-induced CP violation and a
measurement of the CP violation parameter, sin(2phi_1), with the Belle detector
at the KEKB asymmetric e+e- collider. Using a data sample of 29.1 fb-1 recorded
on the Upsilon(4S) resonance that contains 31.3 million BBbar pairs, we
reconstruct decays of neutral B mesons to the following CP eigenstates: J/psi
K_S^0, psi(2S) K_S^0, chi_c1 K_S^0, eta_c K_S^0, J/psi K_L^0 and J/psi K^*0.
The flavor of the accompanying B meson is identified by combining information
from primary and secondary leptons, K+/- mesons, lambda baryons, slow and fast
pions. The proper-time interval between the two B meson decays is determined
from the distance between the two decay vertices measured with a silicon vertex
detector. The result sin(2phi_1) = 0.99 +/- 0.14(stat) +/- 0.06(syst) is
obtained by applying a maximum likelihood fit to the 1137 candidate events. We
conclude that there is large CP violation in the neutral B meson system. A zero
value for sin(2phi_1) is ruled out by more than six standard deviations.Comment: 25 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review
Measurement of CP-violation asymmetries in D0 to Ks pi+ pi-
We report a measurement of time-integrated CP-violation asymmetries in the
resonant substructure of the three-body decay D0 to Ks pi+ pi- using CDF II
data corresponding to 6.0 invfb of integrated luminosity from Tevatron ppbar
collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. The charm mesons used in this analysis come
from D*+(2010) to D0 pi+ and D*-(2010) to D0bar pi-, where the production
flavor of the charm meson is determined by the charge of the accompanying pion.
We apply a Dalitz-amplitude analysis for the description of the dynamic decay
structure and use two complementary approaches, namely a full Dalitz-plot fit
employing the isobar model for the contributing resonances and a
model-independent bin-by-bin comparison of the D0 and D0bar Dalitz plots. We
find no CP-violation effects and measure an asymmetry of ACP = (-0.05 +- 0.57
(stat) +- 0.54 (syst))% for the overall integrated CP-violation asymmetry,
consistent with the standard model prediction.Comment: 15 page
