Consumer Directed Healthcare: Except for the Healthy and Wealthy It’s Unwise
Many politicians and business leaders are advocating high deductible health insurance plans linked with health savings accounts—so-called consumer-directed healthcare. These policies penalize the sick, discourage needed care (especially primary and preventive care), and direct tax subsidies towards the wealthiest Americans. They offer little hope of slowing the growth of health care costs and add further bureaucratic costs and complexity to our health care financing system
Names, bodies and identities
In this article, I argue that the emerging field of the sociology of naming should recognize the fundamental importance of bodies in the range of social practices through which individuals come to have, and to be identified by, names. I introduce the concept of ‘embodied named identity’ to describe the outcome of identificatory practices of naming fundamentally orientated around and rooted in the body. I argue that the concept addresses the neglect of the body within the sociology of names and the neglect of naming within both the sociology of identity and in the sociology of the body. In my elaboration of the value of the concept of embodied named identity for enhancing sociological understanding, I focus on evidence on naming practices in relation to sexed and gendered bodies, racialized and ethnic bodies, bodies, nicknames and characterization, ‘nameless’ bodies and ‘body-less’ names
Art work or money: Conflicts in the construction of a creative identity
The identity projects of novice creative practitioners must take account of the economy of art work. It has been suggested (McRobbie, 2002a) that in the contemporary cultural industries in the UK, a new understanding of the connection between creative work and money has replaced past 'anti-commercial' notions. This claim is investigated through a narrative-discursive analysis of interviews from a longitudinal study with current and recent Art and Design postgraduates. Their ongoing identity projects are shaped by established understandings of creative work and the prospects it offers for earning and employment, and also by more local discursive resources given by personal life contexts. An analysis of two interviews with a single speaker shows how these resources are taken up within her ongoing and distinctive identity project. Both old and new repertoires of art and money are in play in her talk. She must negotiate dilemmas and potentially troubled positionings in order to reconcile a creative identity with relationships and responsibilities towards others. Coherence is only achieved momentarily and is disrupted by new life circumstances. By investigating an identity project at the level of talk, the analysis shows the complexity of the speaker's work to construct and claim a creative identity
What about money?:Earnings, household financial organization, and housework
Objective: This research investigates the role played by household financial organization in configuring the housework participation of women and men and in moderating the influence of earnings on housework. Background: Existing research has focused on the ways in which earnings shape gendered power and housework performance in couple relationships. However, no research has examined how household financial organization intervenes between the receipt of earnings in the labor market and the performance of housework at home. Method: Two-stage least squares regressions were used to analyze data from Waves 2 and 4 of the United Kingdom Household Longitudinal Study (N = 6,070 couples). Results: Management of household finances is associated with an increase in housework time for both men and women, whereas control of household financial decisions reduces men’s but not women’s housework time. Women’s individual earnings reduce their housework time only when they can access these earnings. Supporting both resource bargaining theory and gendered resources theory, men’s relative earnings reduce their housework time when they or their partners manage the couple’s earnings, but not when partners manage their earnings independently. Women’s individual earnings and men’s relative earnings reduce their housework time only when they have partial or full control of household financial decisions. Conclusion: The management and control of household finances influence the time spent by women and men on housework in ways distinct from yet equally as important as those of earnings. Household financial organization is a key premise moderating when and how gender equality in the public sphere helps promulgate gender equality at home
Delivery of Dark Material to Vesta via Carbonaceous Chondritic Impacts
NASA's Dawn spacecraft observations of asteroid (4) Vesta reveal a surface
with the highest albedo and color variation of any asteroid we have observed so
far. Terrains rich in low albedo dark material (DM) have been identified using
Dawn Framing Camera (FC) 0.75 {\mu}m filter images in several geologic
settings: associated with impact craters (in the ejecta blanket material and/or
on the crater walls and rims); as flow-like deposits or rays commonly
associated with topographic highs; and as dark spots (likely secondary impacts)
nearby impact craters. This DM could be a relic of ancient volcanic activity or
exogenic in origin. We report that the majority of the spectra of DM are
similar to carbonaceous chondrite meteorites mixed with materials indigenous to
Vesta. Using high-resolution seven color images we compared DM color properties
(albedo, band depth) with laboratory measurements of possible analog materials.
Band depth and albedo of DM are identical to those of carbonaceous chondrite
xenolith-rich howardite Mt. Pratt (PRA) 04401. Laboratory mixtures of Murchison
CM2 carbonaceous chondrite and basaltic eucrite Millbillillie also show band
depth and albedo affinity to DM. Modeling of carbonaceous chondrite abundance
in DM (1-6 vol%) is consistent with howardite meteorites. We find no evidence
for large-scale volcanism (exposed dikes/pyroclastic falls) as the source of
DM. Our modeling efforts using impact crater scaling laws and numerical models
of ejecta reaccretion suggest the delivery and emplacement of this DM on Vesta
during the formation of the ~400 km Veneneia basin by a low-velocity (<2
km/sec) carbonaceous impactor. This discovery is important because it
strengthens the long-held idea that primitive bodies are the source of carbon

The {\eta}'-carbon potential at low meson momenta
The production of mesons in coincidence with forward-going
protons has been studied in photon-induced reactions on C and on a
liquid hydrogen (LH) target for incoming photon energies of 1.3-2.6 GeV at
the electron accelerator ELSA. The mesons have been identified
via the decay
registered with the CBELSA/TAPS detector system. Coincident protons have been
identified in the MiniTAPS BaF array at polar angles of . Under these kinematic constraints the
mesons are produced with relatively low kinetic energy (
150 MeV) since the coincident protons take over most of the momentum of the
incident-photon beam. For the C-target this allows the determination of the
real part of the -carbon potential at low meson momenta by
comparing with collision model calculations of the kinetic energy
distribution and excitation function. Fitting the latter data for
mesons going backwards in the center-of-mass system yields a potential depth of
V = (44 16(stat)15(syst)) MeV, consistent with earlier
determinations of the potential depth in inclusive measurements for average
momenta of 1.1 GeV/. Within the experimental
uncertainties, there is no indication of a momentum dependence of the
-carbon potential. The LH data, taken as a reference to check
the data analysis and the model calculations, provide differential and integral
cross sections in good agreement with previous results for

The polarization observables T, P, and H and their impact on multipoles
Data on the polarization observables T, P, and H for the reaction are reported. Compared to earlier data from other experiments, our
data are more precise and extend the covered range in energy and angle
substantially. The results were extracted from azimuthal asymmetries measured
using a transversely polarized target and linearly polarized photons. The data
were taken at the Bonn electron stretcher accelerator ELSA with the CBELSA/TAPS
detector. Within the Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis, the new polarization
data lead to a significant narrowing of the error band for the multipoles for
neutral-pion photoproduction
The N(1520) 3/2- helicity amplitudes from an energy-independent multipole analysis based on new polarization data on photoproduction of neutral pions
New data on the polarization observables T, P, and H for the reaction are reported. The results are extracted from azimuthal
asymmetries when a transversely polarized butanol target and a linearly
polarized photon beam are used. The data were taken at the Bonn electron
stretcher accelerator ELSA using the CBELSA/TAPS detector. These and earlier
data are used to perform a truncated energy-independent partial wave analysis
in sliced-energy bins. This energy-independent analysis is compared to the
results from energy-dependent partial wave analyses

Warm Molecular Gas in Dwarf Starburst Galaxies: CO(3-2) Observations
Eight dwarf starburst galaxies have been observed with the Caltech
Submillimeter Observatory (CSO) telescope in the CO J= 3 - 2 transition. The
galaxies observed are He 2-10, NGC 5253, NGC 1569, NGC 3077, Haro 2, Haro 3, II
Zw 40 and Mrk 86; all but the last two are detected. The central regions of He
2-10 and NGC 5253 were mapped and a CO(2-1) spectrum of NGC 5253 was obtained.
The error weighted mean CO(3-2)/CO(1-0) ratio of the detected galaxies is
0.600.06, which is virtually identical to what is found for starbursts in
the nuclei of nearby spirals, and suggests that the molecular gas is optically
thick, warm (T20 K), and moderately dense (). The CO(3-2)/CO(1-0) ratio peaks at or close to the starburst in all
cases. CO emission does not appear to be optically thin in these dwarfs,
despite the low metallicity and intense radiation fields, which is probably
because in order for CO to exist in detectable amounts it must be
self-shielding and hence optically thick. Physical properties of the molecular
clouds in these dwarf starbursts appear to be essentially the same as nearby
spiral nuclei, with the possible exception that CO is more confined to the
