Research note: Measuring cultural values - The case of residents' attitudes to the Saltaire Festival
This research note discusses the findings and methodological issues arising from a cultural values survey of residents, particularly in relation to civic pride. In addition to offering insights to the particular case - the Saltaire Festival in the north of England - it provides an approach that might be used elsewhere
Critical branching processes in digital memcomputing machines
Memcomputing is a novel computing paradigm that employs time non-locality
(memory) to solve combinatorial optimization problems. It can be realized in
practice by means of non-linear dynamical systems whose point attractors
represent the solutions of the original problem. It has been previously shown
that during the solution search digital memcomputing machines go through a
transient phase of avalanches (instantons) that promote dynamical long-range
order. By employing mean-field arguments we predict that the distribution of
the avalanche sizes follows a Borel distribution typical of critical branching
processes with exponent . We corroborate this analysis by solving
various random 3-SAT instances of the Boolean satisfiability problem. The
numerical results indicate a power-law distribution with exponent , in very good agreement with the mean-field analysis. This indicates
that memcomputing machines self-tune to a critical state in which avalanches
are characterized by a branching process, and that this state persists across
the majority of their evolution.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Measurement of Source Chaoticity for Particle Emission in Au+Au Collisions at = 130 GeV using 3-Particle HBT Correlations
Data from the first physics run at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider at
Brookhaven National Laboratory from the STAR experiment have been analyzed
using three-pion correlations to study whether pions are emitted independently
at freezeout. We have made a high-statistics measurement of the three-pion
correlation function and calculated the normalized three-particle correlator to
obtain a quantitative measurement of the degree of chaoticity in the freeze-out

Recent results from BRAHMS
The BRAHMS collaboration ended its data collection program in 2006. We are
now well advanced in the analysis of a comprehensive set of data that spans
systems ranging in mass from p+p to Au+Au and in energy from to 200 GeV. Our analysis has taken two distinct paths: we explore the
rapidity dependence of intermediate and high-transverse-momentum,
identified-particle production, thus helping to characterize the
strongly-interacting quark-gluon plasma (sQGP) formed at RHIC; we also explore
particle yields at lower transverse momentum to develop a systematic

Increasing Doctoral Student Completion Rates Within the College of Humanities and Sciences at Virginia Commonwealth University
Research on doctoral education primarily focuses on broad fields of study and general attrition. Often overlooked, is an examination of the student at each stage of their program and the challenges they face that can potentially lead to stopping out. This capstone project explored the doctoral student experience within the Department of Humanities and Sciences at Virginia Commonwealth University. A mixed method study via an online survey was utilized to gather data about the student experience on their path towards candidacy. Quantitative and qualitative data was analyzed through Chi-square tests and thematic coding to identify answers to each research question. This paper aims to inform students, faculty, and administrators, of common attrition points on a doctoral student’s path to completion. In addition, this research aims to use the data to identify interventions that will support doctoral students in their journey and increase retention rates
BRAHMS Overview
A brief review of BRAHMS measurements of bulk particle production in RHIC
Au+Au collisions at is presented, together with some
discussion of baryon number transport. Intermediate measurements in
different collision systems (Au+Au, d+Au and p+p) are also discussed in the
context of jet quenching and saturation of the gluon density in Au ions at RHIC
energies. This report also includes preliminary results for identified

Does parton saturation at high density explain hadron multiplicities at RHIC ?
We discuss the recent claim that hadron multiplicities measured at RHIC
energies are directly described in terms of gluon degrees of freedom fixed from
the initial conditions of central heavy ion collisions. The argument is based
on the parton saturation scenario expected to be valid at high parton densities
and on the assumption of conserved gluon number. Alternatively we conjecture
that "bottom-up" equilibration before hadronization modifies this picture, due
to nonconservation of the number of gluons.Comment: 8 page
Nuclear Modification Factor for Charged Pions and Protons at Forward Rapidity in Central Au+Au Collisions at 200 GeV
We present spectra of charged pions and protons in 0-10% central Au+Au
collisions at GeV at mid-rapidity () and forward
pseudorapidity () measured with the BRAHMS experiment at RHIC. The
spectra are compared to spectra from p+p collisions at the same energy scaled
by the number of binary collisions. The resulting nuclear modification factors
for central Au+Au collisions at both and exhibit suppression
for charged pions but not for (anti-)protons at intermediate . The
ratios have been measured up to GeV/ at the two
rapidities and the results indicate that a significant fraction of the charged
hadrons produced at intermediate range are (anti-)protons at both
mid-rapidity and
