Implementing ICTs in the educational environment is one of the greatest challenges related to pedagogical and technological innovation, since their use can influence how to teach, constituting educational resources. The aim of this article is describe one teaching experience, based on colaborative learning through co-participation and co-creation, that used a lot of resources and digital plattaforms in an undergraduate course. The stages of the construction of co-creation and co-participation took place in four phases. The project lasted 4 months and was developed by 40 students. In conclusion, the introduction of ICTs and virtual learning environments into the traditional teaching model can improve interaction in the teaching-learning process. The activities developed show the possibilities of the use of ICTs as a potential for co-participation and co-creation. The contact with students through the virtual environment created different possibilities to enrich their knowledge

This text aims to add to the debate on technology, politics, communication, and scientific information related to the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. The chosen approach is the critique of the colonial perspective on knowledge production and communication. Based on literature review on the subject, and journalistic and social media clippings, we come to the conclusion that there was a dispute of truths about the pandemic. On the one hand it exposed the importance of scientific communication, the media and digital networks. On the other hand, it exposed the trivialization of the pandemic and the disqualification of knowledge, based on the Brazilian Federal Government's stance, partly linked to imported and vested interests' views on the subject. The article addresses the relationship between information and communication by analyzing the current state of affairs, and points out to a public communication crisis tensioned by national and transnational private interests. Finally, it introduces the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) as an example of locally developed health information and communication system

Mental health problems of undocumented migrants (UMs) in the Netherlands: a qualitative exploration of help-seeking behaviour and experiences with primary care

OBJECTIVE To explore health-seeking behaviour and experiences of undocumented migrants (UMs) in general practice in relation to mental health problems. DESIGN Qualitative study using semistructured interviews and thematic analysis. PARTICIPANTS 15 UMs in The Netherlands, varying in age, gender, country of origin and education; inclusion until theoretical saturation was reached. SETTING 4 cities in The Netherlands. RESULTS UMs consider mental health problems to be directly related to their precarious living conditions. For support, they refer to friends and religion first, the general practitioner (GP) is their last resort. Barriers for seeking help include taboo on mental health problems, lack of knowledge of and trust in GPs competencies regarding mental health and general barriers in accessing healthcare as an UM (lack of knowledge of the right to access healthcare, fear of prosecution, financial constraints and practical difficulties). Once access has been gained, satisfaction with care is high. This is primarily due to the attitude of the GPs and the effectiveness of the treatment. Reasons for dissatisfaction with GP care are an experienced lack of time, lack of personal attention and absence of physical examination. Expectations of the GP vary, medication for mental health problems is not necessarily seen as a good practice. CONCLUSIONS UMs often see their precarious living conditions as an important determinant of their mental health; they do not easily seek help for mental health problems and various barriers hamper access to healthcare for them. Rather than for medication, UMs are looking for encouragement and support from their GP. We recommend that barriers experienced in seeking professional care are tackled at an institutional level as well as at the level of GP.This qualitative study was funded by The Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development (ZonMw)

A functional yeast survival screen of tumor-derived cDNA libraries designed to identify anti-apoptotic mammalian oncogenes

Yeast cells can be killed upon expression of pro-apoptotic mammalian proteins. We have established a functional yeast survival screen that was used to isolate novel human anti-apoptotic genes overexpressed in treatment-resistant tumors. The screening of three different cDNA libraries prepared from metastatic melanoma, glioblastomas and leukemic blasts allowed for the identification of many yeast cell death-repressing cDNAs, including 28% of genes that are already known to inhibit apoptosis, 35% of genes upregulated in at least one tumor entity and 16% of genes described as both anti-apoptotic in function and upregulated in tumors. These results confirm the great potential of this screening tool to identify novel anti-apoptotic and tumor-relevant molecules. Three of the isolated candidate genes were further analyzed regarding their anti-apoptotic function in cell culture and their potential as a therapeutic target for molecular therapy. PAICS, an enzyme required for de novo purine biosynthesis, the long non-coding RNA MALAT1 and the MAST2 kinase are overexpressed in certain tumor entities and capable of suppressing apoptosis in human cells. Using a subcutaneous xenograft mouse model, we also demonstrated that glioblastoma tumor growth requires MAST2 expression. An additional advantage of the yeast survival screen is its universal applicability. By using various inducible pro-apoptotic killer proteins and screening the appropriate cDNA library prepared from normal or pathologic tissue of interest, the survival screen can be used to identify apoptosis inhibitors in many different systems
