Skeletal Organization of Caudal Fin in Syngnathus abaster (Osteichthyes, Syngnathidae)

The caudal skeleton is one of the most important tools to evaluate teleostean interrelationships, but just the anatomy of few species have been investigated. Black-striped pipefish (Syngnathus abaster) has never been examined for its caudal morphology. Here, red alizaryn is applied as specific staining for calcified structures, providing a better understanding of caudal skeleton organization. Our results and interpretation just partially fit with previous knowledge on other Syngnathus species.

The multicultural identity of modern societies poses a series of challenges, which need being faced. One of these challenges is that of organizing a pluralist society in all its practical aspects as well as possible. The main aim of this paper is that of putting forward a political and social strategy to better integrate foreigners in a society whose values and traditions they do not know. The first assumption is that the integration of the immigrant population could depend as much on their will to take part in the society as on the receiving society’s ability to host them within its territory. By collaborating in order to achieve this objective and by building together a “bi-directional” strategy, the integration process could turn out to be more balanced and fruitful for both parties at play

ABSTRACT This paper aims to find a solution to a relevant issue that modern societies have to face: how does people coming from different cultures can live side by side in the same society? This dissertation explains how an intercultural dialogue could be a reasonable response to face this problem. Not only co-operation among citizens is necessary, but it could be used to bring benefits for both the society and their citizens as well. It will be explained why modern societies should facilitate the process of an intercultural dialogue and how they could stimulate it trough his social and political channels.

Light depolarization effects during the Fréedericksz transition in nematic liquid crystals

This work is aimed to the photopolarimetric characterization of the disorder evolution occurring in homeotropically aligned nematic liquid crystal films during the electrically induced Freedericksz transition. The molecular director dynamics and the transversal reorientation modes are investigated by the analysis of the depolarization of the light beam emerging from the sample. Our measurements reveal unexpected depolarization effects at the transition, which we interpret in terms of director field unhomogeneity and defects creation. (C) 2007 Optical Society of America

Aim of the work. Objectives of the study are the following: quantify and identify microorganisms in the dental plaque of patients with black stain; test in vivo and in vitro efficacy of two mouthwashes; identify a protocol. Materials and methods. The research protocol included a clinical and a microbiological stage. 63 patients between 2 and 15 years with black stain were selected, then divided into three groups. In Group 1 (19 patients) no mouthwash was prescribed. In Group 2 (21 patients) was prescribed a fluoride mouthwash (Sodium Fluoride 0,05%). In Group 3 (23 patients) a chlorhexidine 0,12% mouthwash was prescribed. The microbiological stage provided analysis of pigmented plaque through bacterial count and identification tests and aura of inhibition on agar plate to evaluate the inhibitory power of the mouthwashes examined. Results. It was highlighted a strong decrease in index of pigmented plaque in Group 3 than Groups 1 and 2. The microbiological analysis revealed a decrease in bacterial count higher in Group 3 than Groups 1 and 2. The bacteria identified the most were Clostridia. The chlorhexidine mouthwash was more effective than fluorine mouthwash on bacterial growth. Conclusions. The use of mouthwash in conjunction with periodic specialist visits is essential to assist oral hygiene at home. It is assumed that the mouthwash with chlorhexidine 0,12% is the most effective in reducing black stain in vivo and in vitro
