Working Notes from the 1992 AAAI Workshop on Automating Software Design. Theme: Domain Specific Software Design
The goal of this workshop is to identify different architectural approaches to building domain-specific software design systems and to explore issues unique to domain-specific (vs. general-purpose) software design. Some general issues that cut across the particular software design domain include: (1) knowledge representation, acquisition, and maintenance; (2) specialized software design techniques; and (3) user interaction and user interface
A uniform analysis of HD209458b Spitzer/IRAC lightcurves with Gaussian process models
We present an analysis of Spitzer/IRAC primary transit and secondary eclipse
lightcurves measured for HD209458b, using Gaussian process models to
marginalise over the intrapixel sensitivity variations in the 3.6 micron and
4.5 micron channels and the ramp effect in the 5.8 micron and 8.0 micron
channels. The main advantage of this approach is that we can account for a
broad range of degeneracies between the planet signal and systematics without
actually having to specify a deterministic functional form for the latter. Our
results do not confirm a previous claim of water absorption in transmission.
Instead, our results are more consistent with a featureless transmission
spectrum, possibly due to a cloud deck obscuring molecular absorption bands.
For the emission data, our values are not consistent with the thermal inversion
in the dayside atmosphere that was originally inferred from these data.
Instead, we agree with another re-analysis of these same data, which concluded
a non-inverted atmosphere provides a better fit. We find that a solar-abundance
clear-atmosphere model without a thermal inversion underpredicts the measured
emission in the 4.5 micron channel, which may suggest the atmosphere is
depleted in carbon monoxide. An acceptable fit to the emission data can be
achieved by assuming that the planet radiates as an isothermal blackbody with a

Greater V˙O2peak is correlated with greater skeletal muscle deoxygenation amplitude and hemoglobin concentration within individual muscles during ramp-incremental cycle exercise.
It is axiomatic that greater aerobic fitness (V˙O2peak) derives from enhanced perfusive and diffusive O2 conductances across active muscles. However, it remains unknown how these conductances might be reflected by regional differences in fractional O2 extraction (i.e., deoxy [Hb+Mb] and tissue O2 saturation [StO2]) and diffusive O2 potential (i.e., total[Hb+Mb]) among muscles spatially heterogeneous in blood flow, fiber type, and recruitment (vastus lateralis, VL; rectus femoris, RF). Using quantitative time-resolved near-infrared spectroscopy during ramp cycling in 24 young participants (V˙O2peak range: ~37.4-66.4 mL kg-1 min-1), we tested the hypotheses that (1) deoxy[Hb+Mb] and total[Hb+Mb] at V˙O2peak would be positively correlated with V˙O2peak in both VL and RF muscles; (2) the pattern of deoxygenation (the deoxy[Hb+Mb] slopes) during submaximal exercise would not differ among subjects differing in V˙O2peak Peak deoxy [Hb+Mb] and StO2 correlated with V˙O2peak for both VL (r = 0.44 and -0.51) and RF (r = 0.49 and -0.49), whereas for total[Hb+Mb] this was true only for RF (r = 0.45). Baseline deoxy[Hb+Mb] and StO2 correlated with V˙O2peak only for RF (r = -0.50 and 0.54). In addition, the deoxy[Hb+Mb] slopes were not affected by aerobic fitness. In conclusion, while the pattern of deoxygenation (the deoxy[Hb+Mb] slopes) did not differ between fitness groups the capacity to deoxygenate [Hb+Mb] (index of maximal fractional O2 extraction) correlated significantly with V˙O2peak in both RF and VL muscles. However, only in the RF did total[Hb+Mb] (index of diffusive O2 potential) relate to fitness
Bacillus subtilis and bacillus licheniformis as hosts for genetic manipulation
Because of the potential use of the Bacilli for genetic manipulation, experiments were undertaken to investigate the usefulness of Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus licheniformis strain LO2, as hosts.
Attempts at shotgun-cloning directly in B. subtilis met with repeated failure. However, subsequently the Φ3T-thyP3 gene, pC194 chloramphenicol acetyl transferase gene, B. licheniformis 749/C penP gene and the E. coli lacZ gene were expressed in B. subtilis when cloned into the plasmid vector pAB224 or one of its derivatives. Consequently, such plasmids are useful vectors for genetic manipulation in B. subtilis.
The properties of the thyP3-containing hybrids were investigated. Of particular interest was the finding that monomeric plasmid DNA, containing the thyP3 gene, was active in the transformation of competent B. subtilis cells. Transformation resulted in integration of the thyP3-containing region of the plasmid into the host chromosome.
The secretion of fusion proteins by B. subtilis was investigated employing the B. licheniformis 749/C penicillinase protein signal-peptide. This resulted in the secretion of the E. coli β-galactosidase enzyme from the B. subtilis cell.
The thermotolerant Bacillus licheniformis strain LO2 was investigated as a possible host for genetic manipulation. A series of mutant strains were isolated but the induction of competence in two such strains could not be achieved. Additionally, transformation of protoplasts of strain LO2 could not be demonstrated. Thus contrary to previous hopes, at present this strain does not appear to be suitable as a host for genetic manipulation

The Very Low Albedo of WASP-12b From Spectral Eclipse Observations with
We present an optical eclipse observation of the hot Jupiter WASP-12b using
the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope.
These spectra allow us to place an upper limit of (97.5%
confidence level) on the planet's white light geometric albedo across 290--570
nm. Using six wavelength bins across the same wavelength range also produces
stringent limits on the geometric albedo for all bins. However, our
uncertainties in eclipse depth are 40% greater than the Poisson limit and
may be limited by the intrinsic variability of the Sun-like host star --- the
solar luminosity is known to vary at the level on a timescale of
minutes. We use our eclipse depth limits to test two previously suggested
atmospheric models for this planet: Mie scattering from an aluminum-oxide haze
or cloud-free Rayleigh scattering. Our stringent nondetection rules out both
models and is consistent with thermal emission plus weak Rayleigh scattering
from atomic hydrogen and helium. Our results are in stark contrast with those
for the much cooler HD 189733b, the only other hot Jupiter with spectrally
resolved reflected light observations; those data showed an increase in albedo
with decreasing wavelength. The fact that the first two exoplanets with optical
albedo spectra exhibit significant differences demonstrates the importance of
spectrally resolved reflected light observations and highlights the great

VLT FORS2 comparative transmission spectroscopy: Detection of Na in the atmosphere of WASP-39b from the ground
We present transmission spectroscopy of the warm Saturn-mass exoplanet
WASP-39b made with the Very Large Telescope (VLT) FOcal Reducer and
Spectrograph (FORS2) across the wavelength range 411-810nm. The transit depth
is measured with a typical precision of 240 parts per million (ppm) in
wavelength bins of 10nm on a V = 12.1 magnitude star. We detect the sodium
absorption feature (3.2-sigma) and find evidence for potassium. The
ground-based transmission spectrum is consistent with Hubble Space Telescope
(HST) optical spectroscopy, strengthening the interpretation of WASP-39b having
a largely clear atmosphere. Our results demonstrate the great potential of the
recently upgraded FORS2 spectrograph for optical transmission spectroscopy,

Part 2: Preparing Entry-Level Occupational and Physical Therapy Students to Promote Healthy Lifestyles Emphasizing Healthy Eating with Individuals with Disabilities
Rehabilitation professionals including occupational therapists (OT) and physical therapists (PT) are increasingly called upon to incorporate health promotion of lifestyle behaviors including physical activity and healthy eating into routine clinical care. While OTs and PTs may be comfortable promoting activity-related behaviors, many are less comfortable with nutrition behaviors. To address entry-level OT and PT students’ perceived discomfort with discussing diet-related behaviors, faculty developed a healthy eating module for students to use during a community-based service learning program. The purpose of this paper is to describe the formative evaluation process of developing the healthy eating module, and to discuss results of a pilot trial of this module. The formative assessment of the healthy eating module consisted of four steps: focus groups with students, key informant interviews with community partners, expert panel round table, and expert panel review of materials. Students (n=117) completed questionnaires at the end of the service learning program to assess how much they used the new resources, and how useful they found the resources. The final healthy eating module consisted of an on-line training session and a healthy eating toolkit, including resources for assessments, treatment activities and additional nutrition information.
