    Levitated droplet dye laser

    We present the first observation, to our knowledge, of lasing from a levitated, dye droplet. The levitated droplets are created by computer controlled pico-liter dispensing into one of the nodes of a standing ultrasonic wave (100 kHz), where the droplet is trapped. The free hanging droplet forms a high quality optical resonator. Our 750 nL lasing droplets consist of Rhodamine 6G dissolved in ethylene glycol, at a concentration of 0.02 M. The droplets are optically pumped at 532 nm light from a pulsed, frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser, and the dye laser emission is analyzed by a fixed grating spectrometer. With this setup we have achieved reproducible lasing spectra in the visible wavelength range from 610 nm to 650 nm. The levitated droplet technique has previously successfully been applied for a variety of bio-analytical applications at single cell level. In combination with the lasing droplets, the capability of this high precision setup has potential applications within highly sensitive intra-cavity absorbance detection.Comment: 6 pages including 3 figure

    Quantizing the damped harmonic oscillator

    We consider the Fermi quantization of the classical damped harmonic oscillator (dho). In past work on the subject, authors double the phase space of the dho in order to close the system at each moment in time. For an infinite-dimensional phase space, this method requires one to construct a representation of the CAR algebra for each time. We show that unitary dilation of the contraction semigroup governing the dynamics of the system is a logical extension of the doubling procedure, and it allows one to avoid the mathematical difficulties encountered with the previous method.Comment: 4 pages, no figure

    Biogeographic Barriers in the Andes: Is the Amotape—Huancabamba Zone a Dispersal Barrier for Dry Forest Plants?

Available from Missouri Botanical Garden Press via the DOI in this record.We investigate whether the Amotape—Huancabamba zone in the Andes acts as a barrier or corridor for plant species migration. We test this hypothesis based on data on trees, shrubs, and herbs collected in dry inter-Andean valleys (DIAVs) of Ecuador. We found that 72% of the species cross the Amotape—Huancabamba zone in a north—south direction and 13% of the species cross the Andes in an east—west direction. Southern DIAVs concentrate the highest numbers of endemic species. At the regional level we found that 43% of the species are exclusively Andean, while the remaining 57% are found in the Pacific lowlands, the Caribbean, and Mesoamerica. These results showing many species crossing the Amotape—Huancabamba zone in a north—south direction and also frequently found in neighboring lowland and highland ecosystems suggest that the Amotape—Huancabamba zone acts as a corridor for species migration of dry inter-Andean flora.This research was funded by the SENESCYT scholarship “Convocatoria 2011,” the Oticon Foundation, Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Ecuador, and SYNTHESYS research visiting grant 201

    Low prevalence of patients diagnosed with psoriasis in Nuuk:a call for increased awareness of chronic skin disease in Greenland

    The objective of this study was to estimate the age- and gender-specific prevalence of psoriasis in Nuuk. Furthermore, we aimed to explore the common risk factors and comorbidities for patients with psoriasis compared to an age- and gender-matched control group. The study was designed as a cross- sectional case-control study based on national high-quality data from medical and population registers in Nuuk. A total of 175 patients (0.9%) were diagnosed with psoriasis in Nuuk by January 1 January 2022, of which 79 were females and 96 were males. The prevalence of patients diagnosed with psoriasis in the adult population aged 20 years old or more in Nuuk was 1.1%. No overall gender-specific difference in prevalence was observed. Chronic diseases including diabetes, hypertension, and obstructive lung disease were observed more frequently among patients with diagnosed psoriasis (28.6%) in Nuuk compared to controls (20.9%) (p < 0.05). We found a low prevalence of patients with psoriasis in Nuuk. We speculate that the prevalence found in this study is underestimated and thus, call for increased awareness of chronic skin disease in Nuuk, Greenland. Chronic co-morbidity to psoriasis was common

    A direct and exact method for calculating the density of states for systems with localized potentials is presented. The method is based on explicit inversion of the operator EHE-H. The operator is written in the discrete variable representation of the Hamiltonian, and the Toeplitz property of the asymptotic part of the obtained {\it infinite} matrix is used. Thus, the problem is reduced to the inversion of a {\it finite} matrix

    Analytical Treatment of the Oscillating Yukawa Potential

    Using a suitable Laguerre basis set that ensures a tridiagonal matrix representation of the reference Hamiltonian, we were able to evaluate in closed form the matrix elements of the generalized Yukawa potential with complex screening parameter. This enabled us to treat analytically both the cosine and sine-like Yukawa potentials on equal footing and compute their bound states spectrum as the eigenvalues of the associated analytical matrix representing their Hamiltonians. Finally we used a carefully designed complex scaling method to evaluate the resonance energies and compared our results satisfactorily with those obtained in the literature.Comment: 8 pages 2 table

    Ethnobotanical knowledge is vastly under-documented in northwestern South America

    A main objective of ethnobotany is to document traditional knowledge about plants before it disappears. However, little is known about the coverage of past ethnobotanical studies and thus about how well the existing literature covers the overall traditional knowledge of different human groups. To bridge this gap, we investigated ethnobotanical data-collecting efforts across four countries (Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia), three ecoregions (Amazon, Andes, Chocó), and several human groups (including Amerindians, mestizos, and Afro-Americans). We used palms (Arecaceae) as our model group because of their usefulness and pervasiveness in the ethnobotanical literature. We carried out a large number of field interviews (n = 2201) to determine the coverage and quality of palm ethnobotanical data in the existing ethnobotanical literature (n = 255) published over the past 60 years. In our fieldwork in 68 communities, we collected 87,886 use reports and documented 2262 different palm uses and 140 useful palm species. We demonstrate that traditional knowledge on palm uses is vastly under-documented across ecoregions, countries, and human groups. We suggest that the use of standardized data-collecting protocols in wide-ranging ethnobotanical fieldwork is a promising approach for filling critical information gaps. Our work contributes to the Aichi Biodiversity Targets and emphasizes the need for signatory nations to the Convention on Biological Diversity to respond to these information gaps.     A compositional turnover zone of biogeographical magnitude within lowland Amazonia

    Aim To assess the relative roles of geologically defined terrain types ( environmental heterogeneity) and a major river ( physical dispersal barrier) as predictors of ecological structuring and biogeographical differentiation within Amazonian forests.Location Western Brazilian Amazonia, where the Jurua river and its terraces cross a 1000-km-long boundary between two geological formations ( the Solimoes and Ica Formations).Methods We sampled a 500-km stretch of the Jurua with 71 transects ( 5 m by 500 m) that spanned both the river and the geological boundary. All transects were inventoried for pteridophytes ( ferns and lycophytes) and Melastomataceae, and a subset of 39 transects also for palms and Zingiberales. Three surface soil samples were collected from each transect. The data were analysed using ordinations, regression trees, indicator species analyses and Mantel tests.Results All plant groups showed congruent species turnover between geologically defined terrain types, but little evidence of isolation by the river or geographical distance. Soil cation concentration differed between the Solimoes Formation and other terrain types and emerged as the main explanatory factor for species turnover. A large proportion of the plant species were significant indicators for specific parts of the soil cation concentration gradient, and these edaphic associations were congruent with those found in other parts of Amazonia. Pteridophytes had a larger proportion of species in the cation-rich soils than the other plant groups did, and palms had a higher proportion of generalists.Main conclusions The geological boundary between the Solimoes and Ica formations is confirmed as significant floristic turnover zone. As it runs in a north-south orientation for more than 1000 km, the edaphic differences associated with this boundary have wide-ranging implications for speciation and biogeographical patterns in Amazonia
