A method and technique for installing light-weight fragile, high-temperature fiber insulation

    Get PDF
A method of installing fragile, light-weight, high-temperature fiber insulation, particularly where the insulation is to be used as a seal strip providing a high order of thermal barrier insulation is described. The process is based on provision of a strip of the mineral batting cut oversize by a predetermined amount, saturated in a fugitive polymer solution, compressed in a mold, dried and cured to form a rigidized batting material which may be machined to required shape. The machined dimensions would normally be at least nominally less than the dimensions of the cavity to be sealed. After insertion in the cavity, which may be a wire-mesh seal enclosure, the apparatus is subjected to baking at a temperature sufficiently high to cause the resin to burn off cleanly, leaving the batting substantially in its original condition and expanded into the cavity or seal enclosure

Powers of the Vandermonde determinant, Schur Functions, and recursive formulas

Since every even power of the Vandermonde determinant is a symmetric polynomial, we want to understand its decomposition in terms of the basis of Schur functions. We investigate several combinatorial properties of the coefficients in the decomposition. In particular, we give recursive formulas for the coefficient of the Schur function s_{\m} in the decomposition of an even power of the Vandermonde determinant in n+1n + 1 variables in terms of the coefficient of the Schur function s_{\l} in the decomposition of the same even power of the Vandermonde determinant in nn variables if the Young diagram of \m is obtained from the Young diagram of \l by adding a tetris type shape to the top or to the left. Conical diffraction and the dispersion surface of hyperbolic metamaterials

Hyperbolic metamaterials are materials in which at least one principal dielectric constant is negative. We describe the refractive index surface, and the resulting refraction effects, for a biaxial hyperbolic metamaterial, with principal dielectric constants ϵ1<0\epsilon_1<0, 0<ϵ2≠ϵ30<\epsilon_2\neq\epsilon_3. In this general case the two sheets of the index surface intersect forming conical singularities. We derive the ray description of conical refraction in these materials, and show that it is topologically and quantitatively distinct from conical refraction in a conventional biaxial material. We also develop a wave optics description, which allows us to obtain the diffraction patterns formed from arbitrary beams incident close to the optic axis. The resulting patterns lack circular symmetry, and hence are qualitatively different from those obtained in conventional, positive index materials.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure

Probing viscoelastic properties of a thin polymer film sheared between a beads layer and quartz crystal resonator

We report measurements of viscoelastic properties of thin polymer films of 10-100 nm at the MHz range. These thin films are confined between a quartz crystal resonator and a millimetric bead layer, producing an increase of both resonance frequency and dissipation of the quartz resonator. The shear modulus and dynamic viscosity of thin films extracted from these measurements are consistent with the bulk values of the polymer. This modified quartz resonator provides an easily realizable and effective tool for probing the rheological properties of thin films at ambient environment.Comment: submitted to ap

Global trends in visibility: implications for dust sources

International audienceThere is a large uncertainty in the relative roles of human land use, climate change and carbon dioxide fertilization in changing desert dust source strength over the past 100 years, and the overall sign of human impacts on dust is not known. We used visibility data from meteorological stations in dusty regions to assess the anthropogenic impact on long term trends in desert dust emissions. Visibility data are available at thousands of stations globally from 1900 to the present, but we focused on 359 stations with more than 30 years of data in regions where mineral aerosols play a dominant role in visibility observations. We evaluated the 1974 to 2003 time period because most of these stations have reliable records only during this time. We first evaluated the visibility data against AERONET aerosol optical depth data, and found that only in dusty regions are the two moderately correlated. Correlation coefficients between visibility derived variables and AERONET optical depths indicate a moderate correlation (~0.47), consistent with capturing about 20% of the variability in optical depths. Two visibility derived variables appear to compare the best with AERONET observations: the fraction of observations with visibility less than 5 km (VIS5) and the surface extinction (EXT). Regional trends show that in many dusty places, VIS5 and EXT are statistically significantly correlated with the palmer drought severity index (based on precipitation and temperature) or surface wind speeds, consistent with dust temporal variability being largely driven by meteorology. This is especially true for North African and Chinese dust sources, but less true in the Middle East, Australia or South America, where there are not consistent patterns in the correlations. Climate indices such as El Nino or the North Atlantic Oscillation are not correlated with visibility derived variables in this analysis. There are few stations where visibility measures are correlated with cultivation or grazing estimates on a temporal basis, although this may be a function of the very coarse temporal resolution of the land use datasets. On the other hand, spatial analysis of the visibility data suggests that natural topographic lows are not correlated with visibility, but land use is correlated at a moderate level. This analysis is consistent with land use being important in some regions, but meteorology driving interannual variability during 1974?2003

The impact of deuterium oxide on the properties of resorcinol-formaldehyde gels

Resorcinol-formaldehyde gels offer a range of properties that can be exploited in a variety of applications, but better understanding of gel formation mechanisms is needed to enable rational control and optimisation of the physico-chemical characteristics of these materials. Our previous studies have focussed on investigating the formation pathways of these gels, using nuclear magnetic resonance and dynamic light-scattering techniques, as well as evaluating their final physical and chemical properties, via sorption and spectroscopic methods. Nuclear magnetic resonance has been used over the years to probe the chemical species formed during resorcinol-formaldehyde gel polymerisation, but the technique typically involves the prior addition of deuterium oxide to provide a deuterium lock for NMR measurements. However, the effect of deuterium oxide to resorcinol-formaldehyde systems is currently unknown, although the substitution of water by deuterium oxide has been previously reported to alter the chemical and physical properties of reacting systems. In this work we examine the effect of adding deuterium oxide to resorcinol-formaldehyde sol-gel synthesis at different dilution levels and the impact that this addition has on the final characteristics of the synthesised gels, in order to assess the validity of using NMR with a deuterium lock for the investigation of polymerisation mechanism in resorcinol-formaldehyde sol-gel processes

A new approach to numerical characterisation of wear particle surfaces in three-dimensions for wear study

    Get PDF
In the wear and tear process of synovial joints, wear particles generated and released from articular cartilage within the joints have surface topography and mechanical property which can be used to reveal wear conditions. Three-dimensional (3D) particle images acquired using laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) contain appropriate surface information for quantitatively characterizing the surface morphology and changes to seek a further understanding of the wear process and wear features. This paper presents a new attempt on the 3D numerical characterisation of wear particle surfaces using the field and feature parameter sets which are defined in ISO/FDIS 25178-2. Based on the innovative pattern recognition capability, the feature parameters are, for the first time, employed for quantitative analysis of wear debris surface textures. Through performing parameter classification, ANOVA analysis and correlation analysis, typical changing trends of the surface transformation of the wear particles along with the severity of wear conditions and osteoarthritis (OA) have been observed. Moreover, the feature parameters have shown a significant sensitivity with the wear particle surfaces texture evolution under OA development. A correlation analysis of the numerical analysis results of cartilage surface texture variations and that of their wear particles has been conducted in this study. Key surface descriptors have been determined. Further research is needed to verify the above outcomes using clinic samples
