    IMuR 2022 Introduction to the 2nd Workshop on Interactive Multimedia Retrieval

    The retrieval of multimedia content remains a difficult problem where a high accuracy or specificity can often only be achieved interactively, with a user working closely and iteratively with a retrieval system. While there exist several venues for the exchange of insights in the area of information retrieval in general and multimedia retrieval specifically, there is little discussion on such interactive retrieval approaches. The Workshop on Interactive Multimedia Retrieval offers such a venue. Held for the 2nd time in 2022, it attracted a diverse set of contributions, six of which were accepted for presentation. The following provides a brief overview of the workshop itself as well as the contributions of 2022

    Open Challenges of Interactive Video Search and Evaluation

    During the last 10 years of Video Browser Showdown (VBS), there were many different approaches tested for known-item search and ad-hoc search tasks. Undoubtedly, teams incorporating state-of-the-art models from the machine learning domain had an advantage over teams focusing just on interactive interfaces. On the other hand, VBS results indicate that effective means of interaction with a search system is still necessary to accomplish challenging search tasks. In this tutorial, we summarize successful deep models tested at the Video Browser Showdown as well as interfaces designed on top of corresponding distance/similarity spaces. Our broad experience with competition organization and evaluation will be presented as well, focusing on promising findings and also challenging problems from the most recent iterations of the Video Browser Showdown

    Rushes video summarization using a collaborative approach

    This paper describes the video summarization system developed by the partners of the K-Space European Network of Excellence for the TRECVID 2008 BBC rushes summarization evaluation. We propose an original method based on individual content segmentation and selection tools in a collaborative system. Our system is organized in several steps. First, we segment the video, secondly we identify relevant and redundant segments, and finally, we select a subset of segments to concatenate and build the final summary with video acceleration incorporated. We analyze the performance of our system through the TRECVID evaluation

    Unified access to media metadata on the web: Towards interoperability using a core vocabulary.

    The goal of the W3C's Media Annotation Working Group (MAWG) is to promote interoperability between multimedia metadata formats on the Web. As experienced by everybody, audiovisual data is omnipresent on today's Web. However, different interaction interfaces and especially diverse metadata formats prevent unified search, access, and navigation. MAWG has addressed this issue by developing an interlingua ontology and an associated API. This article discusses the rationale and core concepts of the ontology and API for media resources. The specifications developed by MAWG enable interoperable contextualized and semantic annotation and search, independent of the source metadata format, and connecting multimedia data to the Linked Data cloud. Some demonstrators of such applications are also presented in this article

    Exploring the role of the Sun’s motion in terrestrial comet impacts

    The cratering record on the Earth and Moon shows that our planet has been exposed to high velocity impacts for much or all of its existence. Some of these craters were produced by the impact of long-period comets (LPCs). These probably originated in the Oort Cloud, and were put into their present orbits through gravitational perturbations arising from the Galactic tide and stellar encounters, both of which are modulated by the solar motion about the Galaxy. Here we construct dynamical models of these mechanisms in order to predict the time-varying impact rate of LPCs and the angular distribution of their perihelia (which is observed to be non-uniform). Comparing the predictions of these dynamical models with other models, we conclude that cometary impacts induced by the solar motion contribute only a small fraction of terrestrial impact craters over the past 250 Myr. Over this time-scale, the apparent cratering rate is dominated by a secular increase towards the present, which might be the result of the disruption of a large asteroid. Our dynamical models, together with the solar apex motion, predict a non-uniform angular distribution of the perihelia, without needing to invoke the existence of a massive body in the outer Oort Cloud. Our results are reasonably robust to changes in the parameters of the Galaxy model, Oort Cloud, and stellar encounters.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

    Interactive video retrieval in the age of effective joint embedding deep models: lessons from the 11th VBS

    This paper presents findings of the eleventh Video Browser Showdown competition, where sixteen teams competed in known-item and ad-hoc search tasks. Many of the teams utilized state-of-the-art video retrieval approaches that demonstrated high effectiveness in challenging search scenarios. In this paper, a broad survey of all utilized approaches is presented in connection with an analysis of the performance of participating teams. Specifically, both high-level performance indicators are presented with overall statistics as well as in-depth analysis of the performance of selected tools implementing result set logging. The analysis reveals evidence that the CLIP model represents a versatile tool for cross-modal video retrieval when combined with interactive search capabilities. Furthermore, the analysis investigates the effect of different users and text query properties on the performance in search tasks. Last but not least, lessons learned from search task preparation are presented, and a new direction for ad-hoc search based tasks at Video Browser Showdown is introduced

    Interactive video retrieval evaluation at a distance: comparing sixteen interactive video search systems in a remote setting at the 10th Video Browser Showdown

    The Video Browser Showdown addresses difficult video search challenges through an annual interactive evaluation campaign attracting research teams focusing on interactive video retrieval. The campaign aims to provide insights into the performance of participating interactive video retrieval systems, tested by selected search tasks on large video collections. For the first time in its ten year history, the Video Browser Showdown 2021 was organized in a fully remote setting and hosted a record number of sixteen scoring systems. In this paper, we describe the competition setting, tasks and results and give an overview of state-of-the-art methods used by the competing systems. By looking at query result logs provided by ten systems, we analyze differences in retrieval model performances and browsing times before a correct submission. Through advances in data gathering methodology and tools, we provide a comprehensive analysis of ad-hoc video search tasks, discuss results, task design and methodological challenges. We highlight that almost all top performing systems utilize some sort of joint embedding for text-image retrieval and enable specification of temporal context in queries for known-item search. Whereas a combination of these techniques drive the currently top performing systems, we identify several future challenges for interactive video search engines and the Video Browser Showdown competition itself
