To explore the association between violence and suicidal behavior in female university students. Method: A convenience sample of 540 female students enrolled in the Nursing and Teacher Training Faculties at the University of Valencia was selected. Violence by partners, nonpartners, and both was compared with suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts. An adjusted logistic regression and the Wald Test were performed to explore whether the effect on student's suicidal behavior differed if a partner or others committed violence. Results: 18.1% reported suicidal thoughts in the last month and 2.4% had attempted suicide in the past five years. Suicidal behavior was significantly higher in abused than in nonabused students, although the magnitude was higher when committed by a nonpartner. Conclusions: All forms of violence are strongly associated with suicidal behavior. Understanding the relationship between violence and suicidal thoughts and attempts is a priority for reducing suicide behavior in young women

Experimental study on the bond behaviour between cfrp nsm strengthening system and concrete under fatigue loading

Strengthening techniques based on the use of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) materials have been used in bridges to extend their service life, since it has been proved their excellent performance under fatigue loading. Despite that, only few studies regarding the CFRP-concrete bond behaviour under fatigue loading can be found in the literature. Therefore, there is a further need of investigating how fatigue conditions can affect the behaviour of the bonded joints, since this affects not only serviceability aspects, such as crack width and spacing, but also the ultimate capacity of the strengthened elements. This paper aims to contribute to the understanding of the bond behaviour of Near-Surface Mounted (NSM) CFRP-concrete specimens under fatigue loading. NSM CFRP-concrete specimens have been tested through direct pull-out tests under different fatigue loading conditions (20%-40%, 30%-50% and 40%-60% of the ultimate instantaneous load) at 5 Hz until 2.000.000 cycles. After the fatigue tests, specimens that did not fail under fatigue loading were tested monotonically until failure to study the residual bond response. A significant increase of slip between the CFRP and the concrete at the loaded end was observed with the increasing number of cycles, being higher with the average load increase. Furthermore, a decrease on the stiffness of the cycle’s loop and an increase of the residual slip were observed as the number of fatigue cycles increased. Finally, from the monotonic post-fatigue tests, a decrease on the load-slip stiffness was observed.- (undefined

Objective: The aim of the present study was to explore the influence of a concurrent exercise (aerobic + resistance) training program, from the 17th gestational week (g.w.) until birth on low back and sciatic pain, and pain disability. A total of 93 pregnant women divided into exercise (n = 49) and control (n = 44) groups followed a 60-min, 3 days/week, concurrent exercise training. Methods: Low back and sciatic pain were measured with a Visual Analogic Scale (VAS). The disability resulting from pain was assessed with the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI). Measures were performed at the 16th and 34th g.w. Results: The exercise group increased 21.9 mm less the VAS low back (between-group differences (B): 95% CI: −33.6 to −10.2; p < 0.001) and 12.9 mm less the VAS sciatica score (between-group differences: 95% CI (B): −21.8 to −4.0; p = 0.005) than the control group. Regarding the ODI questionnaire, the exercise group increased 0.7, 0.5, and 0.7 less than the control group in pain while sleeping (between-group differences (B): 95% CI: −1.4 to −0.01; p = 0.025), pain while lifting weight (between-group differences (B): 95% CI: −0.9 to −0.01; p = 0.016), and limitations of the social life due to pain (between-group differences(B): 95% CI: −1.3 to −0.06; p = 0.032). Furthermore, the exercise group suffered 6.9% less pain than the control group in the ODI total score (between-group differences (B): 95% CI: −13.9 to 0.053; p = 0.052). Conclusion: This concurrent exercise training program adapted to pregnant women improved pain compared to controlsThe Regional Ministry of Health of the Junta de Andalucía (PI-0395- 2016)University of Granada, Excellence actions: Units of Excellence; Unit of Excellence on Exercise and HealthJunta de Andalucía, Consejería de Conocimiento, Investigación y UniversidadesEuropean Regional Development Fund (ERDF), REF. The application of gamified learning in physical education is becoming increasingly popular. The aim of this work was to compare the effects of gamification versus traditional methodology to check whether there were differences in the attitudes of the students. A quasi-experimental design study was carried out. The sample consisted of 66 students in Secondary Education. Three questionnaires, POSQ (Perception of Success), BPN (Basic Psychological Needs) and CCDEF (Disruptive Behaviour in Physical Education), were used in both groups before and after carrying out each proposal. Firstly, an independent samples Student’s t-test was performed. The results showed significant final differences in all variables except two: competence (p = 0.068) and aggressiveness (p = 0.136). Secondly, a paired samples t-test was performed. In this case, the control group showed a significant decrease in the variables task orientation (p = 0.004) and autonomy (p < 0.001). According to the experimental group, all variables showed significant differences (p < 0.05), except for two, competence (p = 0.223) and aggressiveness (p = 0.056). Therefore, it was concluded that, with the gamified learning, the students expressed higher levels of task orientation, all BPNs and lower levels of disruptive behaviours than the students who were subjected to the traditional methodology. This kind of intervention can help to improve the quality of education as set out in the SDGs through Quality Education

Combination of Biomaterials and Extracellular Vesicles from Mesenchymal Stem-Cells: New Therapeutic Strategies for Skin-Wound Healing

    Get PDF
Hard-to-heal chronic wounds associated with aging and high-prevalence pathologies, such as diabetes, are a global health problem. Therefore, it is necessary to advance effective treatments to accelerate wound healing. Among these potential treatments are new therapies based on mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) and their secretomes, including extracellular vesicles (EV). They have an important therapeutic potential for the treatment of chronic ulcers, due to their immunomodulatory activity, as well as their ability to induce angiogenesis, cell proliferation and cell migration. The use of MSC-derived EV in regenerative medicine involves cell-free therapies that decrease risks associated with cell therapies, such as the potential development of tumors. However, the short half-life of MSC-EV is a limitation for their clinical use. A therapeutic strategy to increase the regenerative efficiency of EV in wounds is to encapsulate them in biomaterials. The latter must protect and progressively release EV in damaged tissues, optimizing healing. Biomaterials that can be used include hydrogels. These, in addition to acting as a vehicle for sustained application of EV, can create favorable environments for wound healing. Thus, the aim of this review is to critically describe the latest advances in the development of such therapeutic strategies. It highlights the significance and clinical potential of these new therapies, as well as the need to develop clinical trials, to ascertain their performance

To know the epidemiology (prevalence, incidence, progression and morbidity and mortality associated) of peripheral artery disease in general population and the factors associated with this progression is essential to know the evolution of atherosclerosis and develop preventive strategies. The aim of the study was to determine the incidence of PAD after 5 years of follow-up population-based cohort ARTPER, and the evolution of Ankle brachial Index (ABI) in this period. Peripheral artery disease incidence analysis after 5 years of follow-up of 3786 subjects > 50 years old. Peripheral artery disease incident when the second cross section Ankle brachial Index was <0.9 in any of the lower limbs, with normal baseline (0.9 to 1.4). Between 2012 and 2013 2762 individuals (77 % participation) were re-examined. Finally analyzed 2256 subjects (after excluding pathological Ankle brachial Index) followed for 4.9 years (range 3.8 to 5.8 years), totalling 11,106 person-years. Peripheral artery disease 95 new cases were detected, representing an incidence of 4.3 % at 5 years and 8.6 per 1000 person-years (95 % CI 6.9 to 10.5) being higher in men (10.2, 95 % CI 7.4 to 13.5) than in women (7.5, 95 % CI 5.5 to 9.9). Linear correlation between the baseline Ankle brachial Index and the second cross section was low (r = 0.23). The incidence of peripheral artery disease in ARTPER cohort was 8.6 cases per 1000 person-years, being higher in men, especially <65 years. The correlation between two measures Ankle brachial Index after 5 years of follow-up was low. One might consider whether Ankle brachial Index repeated measures could improve the correlation
