    Genre and language in Nick Cave's "And the ass saw the angel"

    Obwohl Nick Caves literarisches Werk von Kritikern und Wissenschaftlern weitgehend ignoriert wurde, ist er indikativ für wichtige kulturelle Phänomene, welche in der vorliegenden Arbeit identifiziert und analysiert werden. In seinem ersten Roman And the Ass Saw the Angel erzählt er die Geschichte eines stummen Jungen im Amerikanischen Süden und präsentiert eine Collage aus unterschiedlichen Genres, Themen und intertextuellen Referenzen. Der Fokus dieser Arbeit liegt auf der generischen Hybridität und der Macht der Sprache, wobei poststrukturalistische Theorien und analytische Konzepte für die jeweiligen Genres herangezogen werden. Die Ähnlichkeiten zwischen den vermeintlich unterschiedlichen Genres und Stilen werden betont und eine genaue Analyse der Hauptthemen und Charakteristika von And the Ass Saw the Angel wird präsentiert. Das generische Zusammenspiel zwischen Gothic Literatur und Postmoderne bildet den Schwerpunkt dieser Magisterarbeit. Der Schauplatz der Erzählung macht sie hinsichtlich der Motive und der ethischen und moralischen Werte zu einem Schauerroman. Der geschichtliche Kontext, welcher vom Fin de Siècle gebildet wird, resultiert in Zusammenhang mit dem geographischen Kontext in einem viktorianischen Weltbild hinsichtlich Sexualität und Geschlechterrollen. Eine detaillierte Analyse von Motiven wie dem Doppelgänger oder dem Unheimlichen, welche an der Tradition des Schauerromans Anleihen nehmen, wird vorgelegt und konzentriert sich auf düstere und groteske Aspekte der Erzählung. Dieser Gedanke wird durch biblische intertextuelle Referenzen unterstrichen, was ebenfalls die postmodernen Aspekte widerspiegelt. Die Erzählstruktur bildet durch die Anwesenheit von zwei Erzählern, von welchen einer unglaubwürdig ist, durch das Fehlen einer Auflösung am Ende der Geschichte und durch die Involvierung der Vorstellungskraft des Lesers die skeptische und spielerische „anything goes“ Haltung der Postmoderne. Die Sprache im Roman, besonders jene des Protagonisten Euchrid, hält an dieser Auffassung fest, da archaische Ausdrücke mit Umgangssprache gemischt werden. Der Sprache wird große Bedeutung beigemessen, da sie eingesetzt wird, um Machtverhältnisse zu kreieren und aufrecht zu halten.Despite the fact that his literary work has widely remained unacknowledged by critics and the scholarly community, Nick Cave is indicative of important cultural phenomena, which this thesis seeks to identify and analyse. In his first novel And the Ass Saw the Angel, he tells the story of a mute outcast boy in the American South, presenting a collage of different genres, themes and intertextual references. Employing poststructuralist theories and analytical concepts and notions for the respective generic modes, this thesis focuses on generic hybridity and the power of language, emphasising the similarities between supposedly different genres or styles and presenting a close analysis of the major themes and features of And the Ass Saw the Angel. The focus of this thesis is on the generic interplay between Gothic and postmodernism. Due to its setting, the novel is unmistakably Gothic in terms of motifs and predominant ethic and moral values. The temporal setting, which is the Fin de Siècle, in connection with the geographical setting results in the world-views, especially regarding sexuality, and gender roles of the Victorian Era. The thesis provides a detailed analysis of features like the Uncanny or the doppelgänger motif, which draw on the Gothic tradition, emphasising the dark and grotesque aspect of the story. This notion is further underlined by intertextual references to the Bible, which also reflects postmodernist aspects. This thesis shows that the narrative structure, featuring two narrators, one of whom is unreliable and mentally ill, lacking closure and leaving many instances to the reader’s imagination, resembles the sceptical and playful “anything goes” attitude of postmodernism. The language of the novel, especially of the protagonist Euchrid, maintains this notion, mixing archaic expressions and slang. Great importance is also attributed to language, as it is used as means for creating and sustaining of power relations

    Genome Mining Revealed a High Biosynthetic Potential for Antifungal Streptomyces sp. S-2 Isolated from Black Soot

    The increasing resistance of fungal pathogens has heightened the necessity of searching for new organisms and compounds to combat their spread. Streptomyces are bacteria that are well-known for the production of many antibiotics. To find novel antibiotic agents, researchers have turned to previously neglected and extreme environments. Here, we isolated a new strain, Streptomyces sp. S-2, for the first time, from black soot after hard coal combustion (collected from an in-use household chimney). We examined its antifungal properties against plant pathogens and against fungi that potentially pose threat to human health (Fusarium avenaceum, Aspergillus niger and the environmental isolates Trichoderma citrinoviridae Cin-9, Nigrospora oryzae sp. roseF7, and Curvularia coatesieae sp. junF9). Furthermore, we obtained the genome sequence of S-2 and examined its potential for secondary metabolites production using anti-SMASH software. The S-2 strain shows activity against all of the tested fungi. Genome mining elucidated a vast number of biosynthetic gene clusters (55), which distinguish this strain from closely related strains. The majority of the predicted clusters were assigned to non-ribosomal peptide synthetases or type 1 polyketide synthetases, groups known to produce compounds with antimicrobial activity

    Mogućnost uporabe melamin-ureaformaldehidnog ljepila ojačanog nanocelulozom u proizvodnji furnirskih ploča

    The possibility of using nanocellulose (NCC) as a filling substance for melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) adhesive was investigated for the process of manufacturing plywood. The adhesive mixtures were prepared with various nanocellulose concentrations. The amount of introduced filler had a significant effect on both resin and plywood characteristics. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) did not show any major changes between experimental and reference variants. The viscosity of resin increased after the introduction of nanocellulose. The addition of NCC in the amount of 5 g and 10 g per 100 g of solid resin led to an improvement in bonding quality, modulus of elasticity and bending strength. Further increase of NCC concentration caused a deterioration of manufactured plywood properties. In summary, the addition of proper amount of nanocellulose resulted in manufacturing plywood with improved properties.U radu je prikazano istraživanje mogućnosti uporabe nanoceluloze (NCC) kao punila za melaminurea-formaldehidno ljepilo (MUF) koje se upotrebljava u proizvodnji furnirskih ploča. Smjese ljepila pripremljene su dodavanjem različitih koncentracija nanoceluloze. Količina dodanog punila znatno je utjecala na svojstva smole i furnirske ploče. Furierovom infracrvenom spektroskopijom (FTIR) nisu utvrđene veće promjene između eksperimentalnih i referentnih varijanti. Viskoznost smole povećala se nakon dodatka nanoceluloze. Dodatak 5 i 10 g nanoceluloze na 100 g otvrdnute smole rezultirao je poboljšanjem kvalitete vezanja, modula elastičnosti i čvrstoće na savijanje. Daljnje povećanje koncentracije nanoceluloze uzrokovalo je pogoršanje svojstava proizvedenih furnirskih ploča.     Programa de intervención en representaciones de creatividad y motivación académica de adolescentes

    Creativity and its promotion are widespread concerns in education. However, few efforts have been made to implement intervention programs designed to promote creativity and other related aspects (e.g., academic motivation). The Future Problem Solving Program International (FPSPI), aimed for training creativity representations and creative problem solving skills in young people, has been one of the most implemented programs. This intervention’s materials and activities were adapted for Portuguese students, and a longitudinal study was conducted. The program was implemented during four months, in weekly sessions, by thirteen teachers. Teachers received previous training for the program and during the program’s implementation. Intervention participants included 77 Basic and Secondary Education students, and control participants included 78 equivalent students. Pretest-posttest measures of academic motivation and creativity representations were collected. Results suggest a significant increase, in the intervention group, in motivation and the appropriate representations of creativity. Practical implications and future research perspectives are presented.A criatividade e sua promoção geram grande preocupação em educação. Contudo, poucos esforços têm existido para implementar programas destinados a sua promoção e de outros aspetos relacionados (e.g., motivação acadêmica). O Future Problem Solving Program International (FPSPI), criado para melhorar as representações de criatividade e a resolução criativa de problemas em jovens, tem sido um dos mais implementados. Os seus materiais e atividades foram adaptados para estudantes portugueses, efetuando-se um estudo longitudinal. O programa foi implementado durante quatro meses, semanalmente, por treze professores, que receberam formação antes e durante a implementação. O grupo experimental incluiu 77 estudantes do Ensino Básico e Secundário, apresentando o grupo de controlo 78 estudantes com características equivalentes. Os dados sobre a motivação e criatividade foram recolhidos num pré e pós-teste. Os resultados sugerem um aumento significativo na motivação e crenças apropriadas de criatividade no grupo experimental. Implicações práticas e perspectivas para investigações futuras são apresentadas.La creatividad y su promoción generan gran preocupación en educación. Sin embargo, han sido llevados a cabo pocos esfuerzos para implementar programas de promoción de la creatividad y otros aspectos (e.g., motivación académica). El Future Problem Solving Program International (FPSPI), creado para mejorar las representaciones de creatividad y la solución creativa de problemas en jóvenes, ha sido bastante implementado. Se adaptaron sus materiales y actividades para estudiantes portugueses, y se desarrolló un estudio longitudinal. El programa se implementó semanalmente durante cuatro meses por trece profesores, que recibieron formación antes y durante la implementación. El grupo experimental incluyó 77 estudiantes de Educación Primaria y Secundaria y el grupo de control incluyó 78 estudiantes con características semejantes. Los datos de motivación y creatividad fueron recogidos en un pre y post-test, sugiriendo un aumento significativo de motivación y creencias apropiadas sobre la creatividad en el grupo experimental.     W artykule skupiam się na zagadnieniu normatywności rytuałów oporu w szkole. Próbuję rozpatrzyć to zagadnienie z punktu widzenia dwóch kultur, które ścierają się w przestrzeni szkoły, a mianowicie kultury dominującej (kultury szkoły) i podporządkowanej (kultury ulicy). Rytuały oporu posiadają zróżnicowaną normatywność, w zależności od tego, czy są narzędziami podtrzymywania hegemonii szkolnej, czy prowadzić mają do zmiany obowiązującego porządku. W artykule również omawiam typologię rytuałów oporu uczniów, która powstała w wyniku zestawienie koncepcji róży emancypacyjnej zaproponowanej przez M. Czerepaniak-Walczak i wyróżnionych przez P. McLarena grup rytuałów istniejących w codzienności szkolnej.The following article focuses on the normativity of the rituals of resistance at school. It examines this issue from the perspective of two cultures which clash in the school environment – the dominant culture (school culture) and subordinate culture (street culture). The rituals of resistance have diverse normativity, depending on whether they are tools for maintaining school hegemony or they are supposed to lead to a change in the current order. The article also discusses the typology of students’ rituals of resistance which was developed as a result of comparing M. Czarepaniak-Walczak’s concept of emancipational rose and P. McLaren’s groups of the rituals existing in everyday school life

    Maģistra darbā „Ārvalstu tiešo investīciju ietekme uz Latvijas ekonomiku” autors veic publiski pieejamo kvalitatīvo un kvantitatīvo ekonomikas rādītāju izpēti, ar mērķi noskaidrot ārvalstu tiešo investīciju ietekmi uz Latvijas ekonomiku. Maģistra darbs sastāv no 3 daļām, 11 nodaļām un 5 apakšnodaļām. Darba teorētiskajā daļā tiks aprakstīti investīciju iedalījuma veidi, detalizētāk aprakstot un skaidrojot tieši ārvalstu tiešās investīcijas, kas ir šī maģistra darba pētījuma objekts. Šajā daļā tiek sīkāk aprakstīta arī ārvalstu tiešo investīciju ietekme uz ekonomikas procesiem. Veselu daļu autors šajā darbā velta investīciju vidi ietekmējošo kvalitatīvo rādītāju izvērtējumam, kurā tiek sīkāk aprakstīti ārvalstu tiešo investīciju ietekmējošo rādītāju vēsturiskās tendences, kā arī analizēti dažādu ekspertu viedokļi par veiksmīgas un ilgtspējīgas investīciju vides izveidi. Darba praktiskajā daļā autors veic kvantitatīvo analīzi, kurā tiek izmantotas korelācijas un regresijas analīzes metodes. Ar šo metožu palīdzību autors identificēs ciešākās sakarības starp ārvalstu tiešo investīciju un ekonomisko attīstību ietekmējošo rādītāju izmaiņām. Regresijas analīzē autors izmantos daudzfaktoru regresijas analīzes metodi. Maģistra darba mērķa un uzdevumu izpilde balstīta uz sistemātisku pieeju: - izmantojot pētnieciskās metodes, tiks kvalitatīvi izvērtēta dažādu faktoru ietekme uz ekonomikas attīstību. Apguves procesā autors izmantojis tikai publiski pieejamos statistikas datus un ekspertu viedokļu apkopojumus; - izmantojot kvantitatīvās datu analīzes metodes, tiks meklētas likumsakarības starp izvēlētās datu kopas rādītājiem. Autors ar ilustratīvu attēlu palīdzību aprakstīs analīzes gaitā iegūtos rezultātus. Darbs sastāv no 87 lapām un tajā izmantoti 26 attēli un 4 tabulas. Izstrādātajam maģistra darbam piešķirama praktiska vērtība.In the master “Impact of foreign direct investment on the economy of Latvia”” author performs research of officially published qualitative and quantitative economy environment ratios. The goal of master work is to evaluate foreign direct investment impact to the economy of Latvia. Master work consists from 3 sections, 11 chapters and 5 sub-chapters. In the theoretical part of the work author describes classification of investments, special attention dedicating to for description of foreign direct investments, which is main object of master thesis. In this part author also describes foreign direct investments impact to economical processes. Separate part of master thesis is dedicated for analysis of qualitative foreign direct investments characteristics where historical trends and expert opinions are used as core drivers for sustainable investment environment establishment. In the practical part author performs quantitative analysis, where correlation and regressions analysis methods are used. With help of those methods author identifies closest relations between foreign direct investment changes and ratios which are affecting economic environment changes. In regression analysis author uses multi-factor regression analysis method. The performance of goal and tasks for master thesis is based on systematical approach: - using research methods, to evaluate impact from different ratios to the economic environment. In the process acquirement author used only publicly available statistical data and expert opinions; - using empirical analysis methods, to search for regularities between the chosen data cluster indicators.     Beyond the Infantilization of Higher Education: Preparing students to live in an (un)safe society

    The article deals with the problem of the infantilization of students, which takes place at universities. The starting point is the thesis that contemporary education at higher levels does not prepare stu- dents for the development of critical thinking and does not provide the skills to deal with problem- atic situations typical of global society. Instead, it approves and implements mechanisms leading to the infantilization of adults, such as: censorship, caution, language medicalization and microag- gression. In the text I analyze these dangerous phenomena and indicate the consequences that they bring, not only for the development of the institution itself, but also its autonomy, and above all the students academic growth
