    Research note: Describing average illuminance for P-class roads

    Design criteria for lighting in subsidiary roads usually include a minimum average horizontal illuminance, widely assumed to be the arithmetic mean illuminance. Analyses of the illuminance distributions over thirty road sections shows that the distributions are not normal and hence the median is more appropriate than the arithmetic mean as a measure of central tendency: the medians are significantly lower than the arithmetic means but the two are highly correlated. Design recommendations should state whether it is the arithmetic mean or median and not just the ‘average’ that is required

    Noise and disturbance caused by vehicles crossing cattle grids: comparison of installations

    Cattle grids are used on roads and tracks to prevent grazing animals from leaving an open space without fencing onto a more controlled area where access to the road from surrounded land is more limited. They are widely used in the UK at the entrances to common and moorland areas where animals are free to roam, but also on private drive entrances. Typically, they consist of a series of metal bars across the road that are spaced so that an animal’s legs would fall through the gaps if it attempted to cross. Below the grid is a shallow pit that is intended to further deter livestock from using that particular crossing point. The sound produced as vehicles cross these devices is a characteristic low frequency “brrrr” where the dominant frequencies relates to the bar passage frequency under the tyres. The sound can be disturbing to riders and their horses and walkers and residents living close by as evidenced by press reports and the need to consider noise aspects in planning for new installations. For this reason and due to the lack of available information on the size and nature of the problem measurements and recordings have been made at a number of sites in Yorkshire in the UK. In addition, questionnaire surveys of residents living close by and façade measurements have also been used to gauge impact. Results show that there is a wide variation in the maximum noise level produced by cattle grids of apparently similar design. This can be related to impact noise produced by the movement of all or part of the grid as the frame comes under impulsive loading as the vehicle crosses. It was further established that some residents living close to the cattle grids were disturbed by the noise, and in some cases vibration, and wanted them removed or suitably modified

    Pulse velocity assessment of early age creep of concrete

    Creep of concrete can have damaging effects by inducing deformations that may contribute or eventually lead to cracks, which influence concrete durability, steel reinforcement exposure to corrosion, and aesthetic damage to architectural buildings. This research investigated the early age creep deformation in concrete samples made with normal, lightweight (Lytag), recycled concrete, and recycled asphalt aggregates using ultrasonic pulse velocity measurements. Creep was achieved by applying a load corresponding to 30% of the strength of concrete to 100 × 250 mm prisms. The compressive load was applied from 24 h after mixing and up to 27 days. The results and analysis of measurements obtained for stress development, specific creep (creep strain per unit stress), and ultrasonic pulse velocity measured up to 27 days after load application are presented. Empirical models that allow the assessment of creep of concrete using ultrasonic pulse velocity measurements are also presented. Early age specific creep is higher for recycled asphalt aggregate than Lytag aggregate and recycled concrete aggregate concretes, which are higher than gravel concrete. Measurements of ultrasonic pulse velocity could be used to determine creep but further work to refine this technique is required

    Exploring the nature of visual fixations on other pedestrians

    How we look at other people may affect conclusions drawn about the effect of changes in lighting when this task needs to be done after dark. This paper reports further analysis of the distance and duration of fixation on other pedestrians, updating a previous review by considering a greater number of fixations and by examining the influence on these of other characteristics such as the relative direction of travel. This analysis provides further support for a tendency to fixate others at a distance of 15 m and for a duration of 500 ms

    Effect of the addition of different waste carbonaceous materials on coal gasification in CO2 atmosphere

    YesIn order to evaluate the feasibility of using CO2 as a gasifying agent in the conversion of carbonaceous materials to syngas, gasification characteristics of coal, a suite of waste carbonaceous materials, and their blends were studied by using a thermogravimetric analyser (TGA). The results showed that CO2 gasification of polystyrene completed at 470 °C, which was lower than those of other carbonaceous materials. This behaviour was attributed to the high volatile content coupled with its unique thermal degradation properties. It was found that the initial decomposition temperature of blends decreased with the increasing amount of waste carbonaceous materials in the blends. In this study, results demonstrated that CO2 co-gasification process was enhanced as a direct consequence of interactions between coal and carbonaceous materials in the blends. The intensity and temperature of occurrence of these interactions were influenced by the chemical properties and composition of the carbonaceous materials in the blends. The strongest interactions were observed in coal/polystyrene blend at the devolatilisation stage as indicated by the highest value of Root Mean Square Interaction Index (RMSII), which was due to the highly reactive nature of polystyrene. On the other hand, coal/oat straw blend showed the highest interactions at char gasification stage. The catalytic effect of alkali metals and other minerals in oat straw, such as CaO, K2O, and Fe2O3, contributed to these strong interactions. The overall CO2 gasification of coal was enhanced via the addition of polystyrene and oat straw

    The helmet fit index - an intelligent tool for fit assessment and design customization

    Helmet safety benefits are reduced if the headgear is poorly fitted on the wearer's head. At present, there are no industry standards available to assess objectively how a specific protective helmet fits a particular person. A proper fit is typically defined as a small and uniform distance between the helmet liner and the wearer's head shape, with a broad coverage of the head area. This paper presents a novel method to investigate and compare fitting accuracy of helmets based on 3D anthropometry, reverse engineering techniques and computational analysis. The Helmet Fit Index (HFI) that provides a fit score on a scale from 0 (excessively poor fit) to 100 (perfect fit) was compared with subjective fit assessments of surveyed cyclists. Results in this study showed that quantitative (HFI) and qualitative (participants' feelings) data were related when comparing three commercially available bicycle helmets. Findings also demonstrated that females and Asian people have lower fit scores than males and Caucasians, respectively. The HFI could provide detailed understanding of helmet efficiency regarding fit and could be used during helmet design and development phases

    Lighting and recognition of emotion conveyed by facial expressions

    A recent study examined how luminance and spectral power distribution affect recognition of facial expression, a proxy for pedestrians' judgements concerning the apparent intent of other people. This paper describes a repeat study which included a greater number of test luminances, a third type of lamp, and an additional, shorter duration of observation (500 ms). Luminance and distance had significant effects on expression recognition; the effect of lamp was not significant and the effect of duration was suggested to be significant only within the escarpment region of the performance versus luminance relationship. The results were used to estimate appropriate light levels for outdoor lighting. A luminance of 1.0 cd/m2 permits facial expressions to be identified with a 50% probability of correct identification at a distance of 15 m
