    Predicting Software Suitability Using a Bayesian Belief Network

    The ability to reliably predict the end quality of software under development presents a significant advantage for a development team. It provides an opportunity to address high risk components earlier in the development life cycle, when their impact is minimized. This research proposes a model that captures the evolution of the quality of a software product, and provides reliable forecasts of the end quality of the software being developed in terms of product suitability. Development team skill, software process maturity, and software problem complexity are hypothesized as driving factors of software product quality. The cause-effect relationships between these factors and the elements of software suitability are modeled using Bayesian Belief Networks, a machine learning method. This research presents a Bayesian Network for software quality, and the techniques used to quantify the factors that influence and represent software quality. The developed model is found to be effective in predicting the end product quality of small-scale software development efforts

    La morfología nominal del español hablado en las comunidades de obrajuelos, apataco, El Conde, El Cangrejal y la Galpa del Municipio de San Jorge, Rivas, durante el segundo semestre del 2014^aEnfoque dialectológico y sociolingüístico

    El presente trabajo es el resultado de una investigación, cuyo objetivo fue estudiar los fenómenos de la morfología nominal (género, número, formas de tratamiento, pronombres enclíticos y derivación) en el habla de los informantes de las comunidades rurales de Obrajuelos, Apataco, El Cangrejal, El Conde y la Galpa del municipio de San Jorge, Rivas ,desde la perspectiva dialectológica y sociolingüística durante el segundo semestre de 2014, ya que se estudia las variantes dialectales propias de esas comunidades y las diferencias diastráticas, es decir, la diferencia entre el habla de los mayores y los jóvenes; y diasexuales, o sea, las diferencias y semejanzas entre las variantes lingüísticas empleadas por hombres y mujeres. Entre los hallazgos más relevantes encontrados en este estudio, se destaca que en las relaciones asimétricas verticales ascendentes (sobrinos a tíos, hijos a padres, nietos a abuelos) los jóvenes utilizan el voseo, lo cual contrasta con los resultados del Atlas Lingüístico Etnográfico de Nicaragua (ALEN, 2010) especialmente en el tratamiento de hijos a padres y nietos a abuelos que a nivel nacional predomina el ustedeo mayoritariamente. Otro dato relevante encontrado es acerca del pronombre enclítico, específicamente en los imperativos siéntense y en los cuales se registran casos cuyos informantes emplean las formas no estándares siéntensen y pónganlon, tendencia que quizás se deba a la influencia de la vecina Costa Rica, país en donde estos términos se emplean con cierta frecuencia

    Effects of age and captivity on plasma chemistry values of the Egyptian Vulture

    Despite the interest in blood chemistry for studying ecological and pathological characteristics of birds, sources of variability such as age and captivity are poorly understood, and reference values usually are obtained from adult captive birds. We determined 15 plasma chemical variables for 164 free-living Egyptian Vultures (Neophron percnopterus) of three age groups (nestlings, subadults, and adults), and for 9 captive adults. Free-living subadults and adults exhibited identical plasma chemistry values. Nestlings had significantly higher levels of creatinine, urate, urea, triglycerides, calcium, phosphorus, and alkaline phosphatase (AP) than both free-living subadults and adults, but lower values of glucose and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). Captive adults had significantly higher levels of total protein, albumin, creatinine, urate; cholesterol, calcium, phosphorus, and AST than free-living adults, which we attribute to differences in diet quality and physical activity. We conclude that future studies should consider age as a major source of variability in avian plasma chemistry, and that results obtained from captivity should be used cautiously to interpret plasma chemistry in the study and rehabilitation of wild birds.Peer Reviewe

    Disgust implicated in obsessive-compulsive disorder

    Psychiatric classificatory systems consider obsessions and compulsions as forms of anxiety disorder. However, the neurology of diseases associated with obsessive-compulsive symptoms suggests the involvement of fronto-striatal regions likely to be involved in the mediation of the emotion of disgust, suggesting that dysfunctions of disgust should be considered alongside anxiety in the pathogenesis of obsessive-compulsive behaviours. We therefore tested recognition of facial expressions of basic emotions (including disgust) by groups of participants with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and with Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (GTS) with and without co-present obsessive-compulsive behaviours (GTS with OCB; GTS without OCB). A group of people suffering from panic disorder and generalized anxiety were also included in the study. Both groups with obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCD; GTS with OCB) showed impaired recognition of facial expressions of disgust. Such problems were not evident in participants with panic disorder and generalized anxiety, or for participants with GTS without obsessions or compulsions, indicating that the deficit is closely related to the presence of obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Participants with OCD were able to assign words to emotion categories without difficulty, showing that their problem with disgust is linked to a failure to recognize this emotion in others and not a comprehension or response criterion effect. Impaired recognition of disgust is consistent with the neurology of OCD and with the idea that abnormal experience of disgust may be involved in the genesis of obsessions and compulsions

    Space Weather Products at the Community Coordinated Modeling Center

    The Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC) is a US inter-agency activity aiming at research in support of the generation of advanced space weather models. As one of its main functions, the CCMC provides to researchers the use of space science models, even if they are not model owners themselves. The second CCMC activity is to support Space Weather forecasting at national Space Weather Forecasting Centers. This second activity involves model evaluations, model transitions to operations, and the development of space weather forecasting tools. Owing to the pace of development in the science community, new model capabilities emerge frequently. Consequently, space weather products and tools involve not only increased validity, but often entirely new capabilities. This presentation will review the present state of space weather tools as well as point out emerging future capabilities

    Therapeutic approach in glioblastoma multiforme with primitive neuroectodermal tumor components: case report and review of the literature

    Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common and aggressive malignant glioma that is treated with first-line therapy, using surgical resection followed by local radiotherapy and concomitant/adjuvant temozolomide (TMZ) treatment. GBM is characterised by a high local recurrence rate and a low response to therapy. Primitive neuroectodermal tumour (PNET) of the brain revealed a low local recurrence rate; however, it also exhibited a high risk of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dissemination. PNET is treated with surgery followed by craniospinal irradiation (CSI) and platinum-based chemotherapy in order to prevent CSF dissemination. GBM with PNET-like components (GBM/PNET) is an emerging variant of GBM, characterised by a PNET-like clinical behaviour with an increased risk of CSF dissemination; it also may benefit from platinum-based chemotherapy upfront or following failure of GBM therapy. The results presented regarding the management of GBM/PNET are based on case reports or case series, so a standard therapeutic approach for GBM/PNET is not defined, constituing a challenging diagnostic and therapeutic dilemma. In this report, a case of a recurrent GBM/PNET treated with surgical resection and radiochemotherapy as Stupp protocol, and successive platinum-based chemotherapy due to the development of leptomeningeal dissemintation and an extracranial metastasis, is discussed. A review of the main papers regarding this rare GBM variant and its therapeutic approach are also reported. In conclusion, GBM/PNET should be treated with a multimodal approach including surgery, chemoradiotherapy, and/or the early introduction of CSI and platinum-based chemotherapy upfront or at recurrence

    "Making Safety Happen" Through Probabilistic Risk Assessment at NASA

    NASA is using Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) as one of the tools in its Safety & Mission Assurance (S&MA) tool belt to identify and quantify risks associated with human spaceflight. This paper discusses some of the challenges and benefits associated with developing and using PRA for NASA human space programs. Some programs have entered operation prior to developing a PRA, while some have implemented PRA from the start of the program. It has been observed that the earlier a design change is made in the concept or design phase, the less impact it has on cost and schedule. Not finding risks until the operation phase yields much costlier design changes and major delays, which can result in discussions of just accepting the risk. Risk contributors identified by PRA are not just associated with hardware failures. They include but are not limited to crew fatality due to medical causes, the environment the vehicle and crew are exposed to, the software being used, and the reliability of the crew performing required actions. Some programs have entered operation prior to developing a PRA, and while PRA can still provide a benefit for operations and future design trades, the benefit of implementing PRA from the start of the program provides the added benefit of informing design and reducing risk early in program development. Currently, NASAs International Space Station (ISS) program is in its 20th year of on-orbit operations around the Earth and has several new programs in the design phase preparing to enter the operation phase all of which have active (or living) PRAs. These programs incorporate PRA as part of their Risk-Informed, Decision-Making (RIDM) process. For new NASA human spaceflight programs discussion begins with mission concept, establishing requirements, forming the PRA team, and continues through the design cycles into the operational phase.     One of the tasks that recent philosophy of psychiatry has taken upon itself is to extend the range of understanding to some of those aspects of psychopathology that Jaspers deemed beyond its limits. Given the fundamental difficulties of offering a literal interpretation of the contents of primary delusions, a number of alternative strategies have been put forward including regarding them as abnormal versions of framework propositions described by Wittgenstein in On Certainty. But although framework propositions share some of the apparent epistemic features of primary delusions, their role in partially constituting the sense of inquiry rules out their role in helping to understand delusions

    An accurate analytic model describing the microscopic mechanism of high-harmonic generation (HHG) in solids is derived. Extensive first-principles simulations within a time-dependent density-functional framework corroborate the conclusions of the model. Our results reveal that (i) the emitted HHG spectra are highly anisotropic and laser-polarization dependent even for cubic crystals; (ii) the harmonic emission is enhanced by the inhomogeneity of the electron-nuclei potential; the yield is increased for heavier atoms; and (iii) the cutoff photon energy is driver-wavelength independent. Moreover, we show that it is possible to predict the laser polarization for optimal HHG in bulk crystals solely from the knowledge of their electronic band structure. Our results pave the way to better control and optimize HHG in solids by engineering their band structure
