On the joint production of research and training
Universities and research institutions have the responsibility to produce science and to provide training to new generations of researchers. In this paper, we propose a model to analyze the determinants of a senior scientist’s decisions about allocating time between these tasks. The results of this decision depend upon the characteristics of the research project, the senior scientist’s concern for training and the expected innate ability of the junior scientist involved. A viscoelastic deadly fluid in carnivorous pitcher plants
Background : The carnivorous plants of the genus Nepenthes, widely
distributed in the Asian tropics, rely mostly on nutrients derived from
arthropods trapped in their pitcher-shaped leaves and digested by their
enzymatic fluid. The genus exhibits a great diversity of prey and pitcher forms
and its mechanism of trapping has long intrigued scientists. The slippery inner
surfaces of the pitchers, which can be waxy or highly wettable, have so far
been considered as the key trapping devices. However, the occurrence of species
lacking such epidermal specializations but still effective at trapping insects
suggests the possible implication of other mechanisms. Methodology/Principal
Findings : Using a combination of insect bioassays, high-speed video and
rheological measurements, we show that the digestive fluid of Nepenthes
rafflesiana is highly viscoelastic and that this physical property is crucial
for the retention of insects in its traps. Trapping efficiency is shown to
remain strong even when the fluid is highly diluted by water, as long as the
elastic relaxation time of the fluid is higher than the typical time scale of
insect movements. Conclusions/Significance : This finding challenges the common
classification of Nepenthes pitchers as simple passive traps and is of great
adaptive significance for these tropical plants, which are often submitted to
high rainfalls and variations in fluid concentration. The viscoelastic trap
constitutes a cryptic but potentially widespread adaptation of Nepenthes
species and could be a homologous trait shared through common ancestry with the
sundew (Drosera) flypaper plants. Such large production of a highly
viscoelastic biopolymer fluid in permanent pools is nevertheless unique in the
plant kingdom and suggests novel applications for pest control
The Second Byurakan Survey Galaxies. I. The Optical Database
A database for the entire catalog of the Second Byurakan Survey (SBS)
galaxies is presented. It contains new measurements of their optical parameters
and additional information taken from the literature and other databases. The
measurements were made using Ipg(near-infrared), Fpg(red) and Jpg(blue) band
images from photographic sky survey plates obtained by the Palomar Schmidt
telescope and extracted from the STScI Digital Sky Survey (DSS). The database
provides accurate coordinates, morphological type, spectral and activity
classes, apparent magnitudes and diameters, axial ratios, and position angles,
as well as number counts of neighboring objects in a circle of radius 50 kpc.
The total number of individual SBS objects in the database is now 1676. The 188
Markarian galaxies which were re-discovered by SBS are not included in this
database. We also include redshifts that are now available for 1576 SBS
objects, as well as 2MASS infrared magnitudes for 1117 SBS galaxies.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure, 1 tabl
Measuring measurement
Measurement connects the world of quantum phenomena to the world of classical
events. It plays both a passive role, observing quantum systems, and an active
one, preparing quantum states and controlling them. Surprisingly - in the light
of the central status of measurement in quantum mechanics - there is no general
recipe for designing a detector that measures a given observable. Compounding
this, the characterization of existing detectors is typically based on partial
calibrations or elaborate models. Thus, experimental specification (i.e.
tomography) of a detector is of fundamental and practical importance. Here, we
present the realization of quantum detector tomography: we identify the optimal
positive-operator-valued measure describing the detector, with no ancillary
assumptions. This result completes the triad, state, process, and detector
tomography, required to fully specify an experiment. We characterize an
avalanche photodiode and a photon number resolving detector capable of
detecting up to eight photons. This creates a new set of tools for accurately

Validation and optimization of AFP-based biomarker panels for early HCC detection in Latin America and Europe
Background: HCC is a major cause of cancer death worldwide. Serum biomarkers such as alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), protein induced by vitamin K absence-II, and the Gender, Age, AFP-L3, AFP, Des-gamma-carboxy prothrombin (GALAD) score have been recommended for HCC surveillance. However, inconsistent recommendations in international guidelines limit their clinical utility.Methods: In this multicenter study, over 2000 patient samples were collected in 6 Latin American and 2 European countries. The performance of the GALAD score was validated in cirrhotic cases, and optimized versions were tested for early-stage HCC and prediagnostic HCC detection.Results: The GALAD score could distinguish between HCC and cirrhosis in Latin American patients with an AUC of 0.76, sensitivity of 70%, and specificity of 83% at the conventional cutoff value of −0.63. In a European cohort, GALAD had an AUC of 0.69, sensitivity of 66%, and specificity of 72%. Optimizing the score in the 2 large multicenter cohorts revealed that AFP-L3 contributed minimally to early-stage HCC detection. Thus, we developed a modified GALAD score without AFP-L3, the ASAP (age, sex, AFP, and protein induced by vitamin K absence-II), which showed promise for early-stage HCC detection upon validation. The ASAP score also identified patients with cirrhosis at high risk for advanced-stage HCC up to 15 months before diagnosis (p < 0.0001) and differentiated HCC from hemangiomas, with a specificity of 100% at 71% sensitivity.Conclusion: Our comprehensive analysis of large sample cohorts validates the GALAD score’s utility in Latin American, Spanish, and Dutch patients for early-stage HCC detection. The optimized GALAD without AFP-L3, the ASAP score, is a good alternative and shows greater promise for HCC prediction
Equity and justice in climate change adaptation : Policy and practical implication in Nigeria
Over the past decade, justice and equity have become a quasi-universal answer to problems of environmental governance. The principles of justice and equity emerged as a useful entry point in global governance to explore the responsibilities, distribution, and procedures required for just climate change adaptation. These principles are designed primarily through the establishment of funding mechanisms, top-down guides, and frameworks for adaptation, and other adaptation instruments from the UNFCCC process, to ensure effective adaptation for vulnerable countries like Nigeria that have contributed least to the issue of climate change but lack adaptive capacity. Global adaptation instruments have been acknowledged for adaptation in Nigeria. Climate change has a detrimental impact on Nigeria as a nation, with the burden falling disproportionately on the local government areas. As Nigeria develop national plans and policies to adapt to the consequences of climate change, these plans will have significant consequences for local government areas where adaptation practices occur. Although the local government’s adaptation burden raises the prospects for justice and equity, its policy and practical implication remains less explored. This chapter explores the principles of justice and equity in national adaptation policy and adaptation practices in eight local government areas in southeast Nigeria. The chapter argues that some factors make it challenging to achieve equity and justice in local adaptation practices. With the use of a qualitative approach (interview (n = 52), observation, and document analysis), this chapter identified some of the factors that constraints equity and justice in local government adaptation in southeast Nigeria.publishedVersio
Hadronic Mass Moments in Inclusive Semileptonic B Meson Decays
We have measured the first and second moments of the hadronic mass-squared
distribution in B -> X_c l nu, for P(lepton) > 1.5 GeV/c. We find <M_X^2 -
M_D[Bar]^2> = 0.251 +- 0.066 GeV^2, )^2 > = 0.576 +- 0.170
GeV^4, where M_D[Bar] is the spin-averaged D meson mass.
From that first moment and the first moment of the photon energy spectrum in
b -> s gamma, we find the HQET parameter lambda_1 (MS[Bar], to order 1/M^3 and
beta_0 alpha_s^2) to be -0.24 +- 0.11 GeV^2. Using these first moments and the
B semileptonic width, and assuming parton-hadron duality, we obtain |V_cb| =

We have studied two-body charmless hadronic decays of mesons into the
final states phi K and phi K^*. Using 9.7 million pairs collected
with the CLEO II detector, we observe the decays B- -> phi K- and B0 -> phi K*0
with the following branching fractions: BR(B- -> phi K-)=(5.5 +2.1-1.8 +- 0.6)
x 10^{-6} and BR(B0 -> phi K*0)=(11.5 +4.5-3.7 +1.8-1.7) x 10^{-6}. We also see
evidence for the decays B0 -> phi K0 and B- -> phi K*-. However, since the
statistical significance is not overwhelming for these modes we determine upper
limits of <12.3 x 10^{-6} and <22.5 x 10^{-6} (90% C.L.) respectively.Comment: 9 pages postscript, also available through

Evidence of New States Decaying into
Using 13.7 of data recorded by the CLEO detector at CESR, we report
evidence for two new charmed baryons: one decaying into
with the subsequent decay , and its
isospin partner decaying into followed by
. We measure the following mass differences
for the two states: =318.2+-1.3+-2.9 MeV,
and =324.0+-1.3+-3.0 MeV. We interpret
these new states as the particles, the charmed-strange

First Observation of B -> D(*) rho', rho' -> omega pi-
We report on the observation of B-> D(*) pi+ pi- pi- pi^o decays. The
branching ratios for D*+ and D*o are (1.72+/-0.14+/-0.24)% and
(1.80+/-0.24+/-0.27)%, respectively. Each final state has a D* omega pi-
component, with branching ratios (0.29+/-0.03+/-0.04)% and
(0.45+/-0.10+/-0.07)% for the D*+ and D*o modes, respectively. We also observe
B -> D omega pi- decays. The branching ratios for D+ and Do are
(0.28+/-0.05+/-0.04)% and (0.41+/-0.07+/-0.06)%, respectively. A spin parity
analysis of the D omega pi- final state prefers a wide 1^- resonance. A fit to
the omega pi- mass spectrum finds a central mass of (1349+/-25^{+10}_{-5}) MeV
and width of (547+/-86^{+46}_{-45}) MeV. We identify this object as the
