    Analysis of the Reaction Rate Coefficients for Slow Bimolecular Chemical Reactions

    Simple bimolecular reactions A1+A2A3+A4A_1+A_2\rightleftharpoons A_3+A_4 are analyzed within the framework of the Boltzmann equation in the initial stage of a chemical reaction with the system far from chemical equilibrium. The Chapman-Enskog methodology is applied to determine the coefficients of the expansion of the distribution functions in terms of Sonine polynomials for peculiar molecular velocities. The results are applied to the reaction H2+ClHCl+HH_2+Cl\rightleftharpoons HCl+H, and the influence of the non-Maxwellian distribution and of the activation-energy dependent reactive cross sections upon the forward and reverse reaction rate coefficients are discussed.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, to appear in vol.42 of the Brazilian Journal of Physic

    Emergent Gauge Fields in Holographic Superconductors

    Holographic superconductors have been studied so far in the absence of dynamical electromagnetic fields, namely in the limit in which they coincide with holographic superfluids. It is possible, however, to introduce dynamical gauge fields if a Neumann-type boundary condition is imposed on the AdS-boundary. In 3+1 dimensions, the dual theory is a 2+1 dimensional CFT whose spectrum contains a massless gauge field, signaling the emergence of a gauge symmetry. We study the impact of a dynamical gauge field in vortex configurations where it is known to significantly affect the energetics and phase transitions. We calculate the critical magnetic fields H_c1 and H_c2, obtaining that holographic superconductors are of Type II (H_c1 < H_c2). We extend the study to 4+1 dimensions where the gauge field does not appear as an emergent phenomena, but can be introduced, by a proper renormalization, as an external dynamical field. We also compare our predictions with those arising from a Ginzburg-Landau theory and identify the generic properties of Abrikosov vortices in holographic models.Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures, few comments added, version published in JHE

    Pedogenic pathways and deep weathering controls on soil organic carbon in Pacific Northwest forest soils

    Characterizing the distribution and dynamics of organic carbon in soil is critical for quantifying changes in the global carbon cycle. In particular, weathering controls on near-surface and deep (>1 m) soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics have been proposed but limited data prevents us from predicting SOC over topographically complex landscapes and quantifying how changes in climate and perturbations, such as wildfire or land management, influence SOC stocks. To advance our understanding of how weathering alters soil geochemistry and influences SOC storage, we synthesize previous data with a new analysis of the Siuslaw River soil chronosequence from terraces in the Oregon Coast Range, a region that harbors the richest SOC inventories in the continental US. We analyze how the relationships between soil geochemistry, physical properties, and SOC storage vary with weathering status and pathways across soils that span 0.041 to 990 kyr and vary in depth from 1 m to >10 m. To distinguish the key properties and processes influencing SOC storage at different depths, we break our analysis into three depth intervals: 0–30, 30–100, and >100 cm. Our results suggest that the processes that control SOC stocks vary systematically with time and depth owing to weathering impacts on soil properties and pedogenic development. At 30 kyr we observe a peak in SOC stock in the top 100 cm coincident with a peak in oxalate extractable Al and Fe concentrations, representing secondary poorly crystalline minerals, which is consistent with previous studies. We also observe a decline in shallow SOC stock for >30 kyr soils as poorly crystalline minerals are replaced by more stable crystalline forms and soils become clay dominated. At 120 kyr, SOC below 100 cm starts to contribute significantly to the total SOC profile inventory and by 990 kyr, this fraction composes >40% of the total SOC stock. Taken together, our results indicate that total SOC stock increases with soil age as the increased intensity of bedrock weathering deepens the critical zone, creating accommodation space for deep SOC storage. These findings reveal the intimate link between poorly crystalline minerals and SOC and suggest that systematic analysis of soil development in the critical zone provides a first-order constraint on SOC stocks

    Inequities in access to mammographic screening in Brazil

    Our objectives with this study were to describe the spatial distribution of mammographic screening coverage across small geographical areas (micro-regions) in Brazil, and to analyze whether the observed differences were associated with spatial inequities in socioeconomic conditions, provision of health care, and healthcare services utilization. We performed an area-based ecological study on mammographic screening coverage in the period of 2010-2011 regarding socioeconomic and healthcare variables. The units of analysis were the 438 health micro-regions in Brazil. Spatial regression models were used to study these relationships. There was marked variability in mammographic coverage across micro-regions (median = 21.6%; interquartile range: 8.1%-37.9%). Multivariable analyses identified high household income inequality, low number of radiologists/100,000 inhabitants, low number of mammography machines/10,000 inhabitants, and low number of mammograms performed by each machine as independent correlates of poor mammographic coverage at the micro-region level. There was evidence of strong spatial dependence of these associations, with changes in one micro-region affecting neighboring micro-regions, and also of geographical heterogeneities. There were substantial inequities in access to mammographic screening across micro-regions in Brazil, in 2010-2011, with coverage being higher in those with smaller wealth inequities and better access to health care

    Paradoxical effects of Worrisome Thoughts Suppression: the influence of depressive mood

    Thought suppression increases the persistence of unwanted idiosyncratic worries thoughts when individuals try to suppress them. The failure of suppression may contribute to the development and maintenance of emotional disorders. Depressive people seem particulary prone to engage in unsuccessful mental control strategies such as thought suppression. Worry has been reported to be elevated in depressed individuals and a dysphoric mood may also contribute for the failure of suppression. No studies examine, however, the suppression of worisome thoughts in individuals with depressive symptoms. To investigate the suppression effects of worrisome thoughts, 46 participants were selected according to the cut-off score of a depressive symptomatology scale and they were divided in two groups (subclinical and nonclinical group). All the individuals took part in an experimental paradigm of thought suppression. The results of the mixed factorial analysis of variance revealed an increased frequency of worrisome thoughts during the suppression phase on depending of the depressive symptoms.     Internal delensing of cosmic microwave background polarization B-Modes with the POLARBEAR experiment

    International audienceUsing only cosmic microwave background polarization data from the polarbear experiment, we measure B-mode polarization delensing on subdegree scales at more than 5σ significance. We achieve a 14% B-mode power variance reduction, the highest to date for internal delensing, and improve this result to 22% by applying for the first time an iterative maximum a posteriori delensing method. Our analysis demonstrates the capability of internal delensing as a means of improving constraints on inflationary models, paving the way for the optimal analysis of next-generation primordial B-mode experiments
