    Natural resources conflicts and the biofuel industry: implications and proposals for Ghana

    Africa has become an important target producer of the feedstock, Jatropha curcas L (JCL), for biofuel production. This presents opportunities for transforming production, markets and the well-being of farmers and rural populations in developing countries, if deals are well-structured. The history of natural resource use conflicts in Africa has important implications for understanding current resource ecology and the social and political relationships within it. Ghana has had varying resource management regimes in its history. This paper seeks to relate the history of Ghana's natural resources conflicts to the current rush for lands in Ghana forcultivation of JCL and to discuss its implications and opportunities for a sustainable JCL industry in the countly. The colonial and postcolonial land conflicts and politics and the current and potential conflicts and opportunities associated with the JCL indust1y are presented. The paper offers suggestions not only for a sustainable cultivation of Jatropha, but alsofor a biofuel policy in Ghana.Keywords: Biofuel; natural resources conflicts,- land grabbing; Jatrophacurcas; Ghana

    The role of the small intestine in the development of dietary fat-induced obesity and insulin resistance in C57BL/6J mice

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Obesity and insulin resistance are two major risk factors underlying the metabolic syndrome. The development of these metabolic disorders is frequently studied, but mainly in liver, skeletal muscle, and adipose tissue. To gain more insight in the role of the small intestine in development of obesity and insulin resistance, dietary fat-induced differential gene expression was determined along the longitudinal axis of small intestines of C57BL/6J mice.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Male C57BL/6J mice were fed a low-fat or a high-fat diet that mimicked the fatty acid composition of a Western-style human diet. After 2, 4 and 8 weeks of diet intervention small intestines were isolated and divided in three equal parts. Differential gene expression was determined in mucosal scrapings using Mouse genome 430 2.0 arrays.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The high-fat diet significantly increased body weight and decreased oral glucose tolerance, indicating insulin resistance. Microarray analysis showed that dietary fat had the most pronounced effect on differential gene expression in the middle part of the small intestine. By overrepresentation analysis we found that the most modulated biological processes on a high-fat diet were related to lipid metabolism, cell cycle and inflammation. Our results further indicated that the nuclear receptors Ppars, Lxrs and Fxr play an important regulatory role in the response of the small intestine to the high-fat diet. Next to these more local dietary fat effects, a secretome analysis revealed differential gene expression of secreted proteins, such as Il18, Fgf15, Mif, Igfbp3 and Angptl4. Finally, we linked the fat-induced molecular changes in the small intestine to development of obesity and insulin resistance.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>During dietary fat-induced development of obesity and insulin resistance, we found substantial changes in gene expression in the small intestine, indicating modulations of biological processes, especially related to lipid metabolism. Moreover, we found differential expression of potential signaling molecules that can provoke systemic effects in peripheral organs by influencing their metabolic homeostasis. Many of these fat-modulated genes could be linked to obesity and/or insulin resistance. Together, our data provided various leads for a causal role of the small intestine in the etiology of obesity and/or insulin resistance.</p

    Hydrothermal alteration of andesitic lava domes can lead to explosive volcanic behaviour

    Dome-forming volcanoes are among the most hazardous volcanoes on Earth. Magmatic outgassing can be hindered if the permeability of a lava dome is reduced, promoting pore pressure augmentation and explosive behaviour. Laboratory data show that acid-sulphate alteration, common to volcanoes worldwide, can reduce the permeability on the sample lengthscale by up to four orders of magnitude and is the result of pore- and microfracture-filling mineral precipitation. Calculations using these data demonstrate that intense alteration can reduce the equivalent permeability of a dome by two orders of magnitude, which we show using numerical modelling to be sufficient to increase pore pressure. The fragmentation criterion shows that the predicted pore pressure increase is capable of fragmenting the majority of dome-forming materials, thus promoting explosive volcanism. It is crucial that hydrothermal alteration, which develops over months to years, is monitored at dome-forming volcanoes and is incorporated into real-time hazard assessments

    Socio-economic impact of biofuel feedstock production on local livelihoods in Ghana

    The production of liquid biofuels has become an issue of concern in many developing countries,due mainly to the establishment of large-scale biofuel feedstock plantations. These plantationspresent potential socio-economic benefits, particularly in terms of agricultural employment, aswell as risks. The spread of large-scale commercial production of biofuel crops in Ghana hasraised concerns from civil society organizations, local communities and other parties. Thispaper draws on studies that have been conducted in Ghana to assess the socio-economicimpact of large-scale production of biofuel crops, especially Jatropha, on the livelihoods oflocal communities and people in Ghana, focusing on land grabbing and alienation, impact onfood production and security, and impact on employment and income generation.     FUNDAMENTOS E OBJETIVO: O esporte tem um papel fundamental na reabilitação física de pacientes com lesão medular por ampliar as alternativas terapêuticas e favorecer a independência funcional. O estudo tem por objetivo conhecer os efeitos da natação sobre habilidades funcionais de pacientes com lesão medular. MÉTODOS: Foram selecionados 16 pacientes portadores de lesão medular, divididos em dois grupos: experimental e controle. Os grupos foram avaliados por meio da Medida de Independência Funcional (Escala FIM) antes e após o procedimento que consistiu em sessões de natação realizadas duas vezes por semana durante quatro meses. RESULTADOS: Os dois grupos apresentaram mudanças nos cuidados com o corpo, transferências, escore motor total e escore total. O grupo experimental apresentou ganho maior nas transferências, escore motor total e escore total. CONCLUSÃO: A atividade de natação foi efetiva na melhora da condição física, trazendo benefícios motores sobre as habilidades funcionais dos participantes do grupo experimental.<br>FUNDAMENTOS Y OBJETIVO: El deporte tiene un papel fundamental en la rehabilitación física de pacientes con lesión medular por ampliar las alternativas terapéuticas y favorecer la independencia funcional. CONCLUSIÓN: La actividad de natación fue efectiva en la mejora de la condición física, trayendo beneficios motores sobre las habilidades funcionales de los participantes del grupo experimental.<br>FUNDAMENTS AND OBJECTIVE: Sports play an important role in the physical rehabilitation of patients with spinal cord injury by broadening the therapeutic alternatives in addition to providing functional independence. The objective of this study is to determining the effects of swimming on the functional capacity of patients with spinal cord injury. METHODS: 16 patients with spinal cord injury were divided into two groups: experimental and control. The assessment of both groups was performed using the Functional Independence Measure (FIM scale) before and after the trial, which consisted of swimming sessions performed twice a week during a period of four months. RESULTS: Both groups demonstrated noticeable gains related to body care, transference, overall and motor scores, even though the experimental group presented greater gains in transference, overall motor score and overall score. CONCLUSION: The swimming activity was effective in improving their physical condition, bringing motor benefits on the functional capacity of participants from the experimental group
