    A interação universidades-empresas e o processo de inovação em Pernambuco: o caso da Engenharia Elétrica e o setor de eletricidade e gás

    Este trabalho investiga, a partir de estudo de caso, a interação entre universidades e empresas no Nordeste brasileiro, sobretudo no Estado do Pernambuco. Focando as interações ocorridas entre a Engenharia Elétrica e áreas afins com o setor de eletricidade e gás, procura-se buscar os aceleradores e inibidores dessa interação, importante para o processo de inovação. O Brasil possui um Sistema Nacional de Inovação (SNI) precário, limitado a conexões parciais e caracterizado por poucos pontos de interação entre as dimensões científica e tecnológica. Este trabalho estuda esses pontos de interação através das relações existentes entre os grupos de pesquisa de Engenharia Elétrica listados na base de dados do Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) e as empresas do setor produtivo. It highlights the interactions occurring between the area of electrical engineering and related fields with the electricity and gas sector, identifying the accelerators and inhibitors of this interaction, which is important to the innovation process. Brazil has a National Innovation System (SNI) that is precarious, limited to partial connections and characterized by a few interaction points between the scientific and the technological dimensions.     O ciclo glicose-ácido graxo explica a preferência do tecido muscular pelos ácidos graxos durante atividade moderada de longa duração. Em contraste, durante o exercício de alta intensidade, há aumento na disponibilidade e na taxa de oxidação de glicose. A produção de espécies reativas de oxigênio (EROs) durante a atividade muscular sugere que o balanço redox intracelular é importante na regulação do metabolismo de lipídios/carboidratos. As EROs diminuem a atividade do ciclo de Krebs e aumentam a atividade da proteína desacopladora mitocondrial. O efeito oposto é esperado durante a atividade moderada.     Evaluation of the effects of Quercetin and Kaempherol on the surface of MT-2 cells visualized by atomic force microscopy

    AbstractThis study investigated the anti-viral effects of the polyphenolic compounds Quercetin and Kaempherol on the release of HTLV-1 from the surface of MT-2 cells. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to scan the surface of the MT-2 cells. MT-2 cells were fixed with 100% methanol on round glass lamina or cleaved mica and dried under UV light and laminar flow. The images were captured on a Multimode equipment monitored by a NanoScope IIId controller from Veeco Instruments Inc operated in tapping mode and equipped with phase-imaging hardware. The images demonstrated viral budding structures 131±57nm in size, indicating profuse viral budding. Interestingly, cell-free viruses and budding structures visualized on the surface of cells were less common when MT-2 was incubated with Quercetin, and no particles were seen on the surface of cells incubated with Kaempherol. In summary, these data indicate that HTLV-1 is budding constantly from the MT-2 cell surface and that polyphenolic compounds were able to reduce this viral release. Biological samples were analyzed with crude cell preparations just after cultivation in the presence of Quercetin and Kaempherol, showing that the AFM technique is a rapid and powerful tool for analysis of antiviral activity of new biological compounds

    Hydrogen peroxide production regulates the mitochondrial function in insulin resistant muscle cells: Effect of catalase overexpression

    AbstractThe mitochondrial redox state plays a central role in the link between mitochondrial overloading and insulin resistance. However, the mechanism by which the ROS induce insulin resistance in skeletal muscle cells is not completely understood. We examined the association between mitochondrial function and H2O2 production in insulin resistant cells. Our hypothesis is that the low mitochondrial oxygen consumption leads to elevated ROS production by a mechanism associated with reduced PGC1α transcription and low content of phosphorylated CREB. The cells were transfected with either the encoded sequence for catalase overexpression or the specific siRNA for catalase inhibition. After transfection, myotubes were incubated with palmitic acid (500μM) and the insulin response, as well as mitochondrial function and fatty acid metabolism, was determined. The low mitochondrial oxygen consumption led to elevated ROS production by a mechanism associated with β-oxidation of fatty acids. Rotenone was observed to reduce the ratio of ROS production. The elevated H2O2 production markedly decreased the PGC1α transcription, an effect that was accompanied by a reduced phosphorylation of Akt and CREB. The catalase transfection prevented the reduction in the phosphorylated level of Akt and upregulated the levels of phosphorylated CREB. The mitochondrial function was elevated and H2O2 production reduced, thus increasing the insulin sensitivity. The catalase overexpression improved mitochondrial respiration protecting the cells from fatty acid-induced, insulin resistance. This effect indicates that control of hydrogen peroxide production regulates the mitochondrial respiration preventing the insulin resistance in skeletal muscle cells by a mechanism associated with CREB phosphorylation and β-oxidation of fatty acids

    Religious experience and aesthetic experience in plastic artists : perspectives from the psychology of religion

    Pode a experiência religiosa ser substituída pela experiência estética? Os estudiosos se dividem na resposta. Situando a pergunta no quadro de referência conceitual e epistemológico que distingue entre religião substantiva e religião funcional, levantamos a hipótese de que não há substituição substantiva, mas pode haver substituição funcional entre essas experiências. Levantamos a hipótese ulterior de que a experiência estética pode ser uma experiência do sagrado. As hipóteses foram examinadas com os dados obtidos em entrevistas com oito renomados artistas plásticos, por ocasião da 23ª Bienal de São Paulo, em 1996. Os dados revelaram diferenças, continuidades e analogias entre arte e religião assim como entre arte e sagrado, que permitiram reconhecer em alguns casos substituição funcional da religião pela arte, principalmente se dotada da densidade do sagrado.ABSTRACT Can aesthetic experience replace religious experience? Researchers are quite divided about this issue. From a conceptual and epistemological framework that distinguishes between substantive and functional religion, we formulated the hypothesis that there is not a substantive replacement, but there can be a functional replacement of religious experience by an aesthetic experience. We also considered the additional hypothesis that aesthetic experience can be an experience of the sacred. The hypotheses were examined with the help of interviews with eight well known Brazilian artists, by the time of the 23rd Biennial International Exhibition of Arts of São Paulo, 1996. The data revealed differences, continuities, and analogies between art and religion and between art and the sacred, that allowed to identify in some cases a functional replacement of religion by art, especially if art was endowed with the density of the sacred

    Cerebral Palsy:Early Markers of Clinical Phenotype and Functional Outcome

    The Prechtl General Movement Assessment (GMA) has become a cornerstone assessment in early identification of cerebral palsy (CP), particularly during the fidgety movement period at 3-5 months of age. Additionally, assessment of motor repertoire, such as antigravity movements and postural patterns, which form the Motor Optimality Score (MOS), may provide insight into an infant's later motor function. This study aimed to identify early specific markers for ambulation, gross motor function (using the Gross Motor Function Classification System, GMFCS), topography (unilateral, bilateral), and type (spastic, dyskinetic, ataxic, and hypotonic) of CP in a large worldwide cohort of 468 infants. We found that 95% of children with CP did not have fidgety movements, with 100% having non-optimal MOS. GMFCS level was strongly correlated to MOS. An MOS > 14 was most likely associated with GMFCS outcomes I or II, whereas GMFCS outcomes IV or V were hardly ever associated with an MOS > 8. A number of different movement patterns were associated with more severe functional impairment (GMFCS III-V), including atypical arching and persistent cramped-synchronized movements. Asymmetrical segmental movements were strongly associated with unilateral CP. Circular arm movements were associated with dyskinetic CP. This study demonstrated that use of the MOS contributes to understanding later CP prognosis, including early markers for type and severity

    Molecular epidemiological investigation of Mayaro virus in febrile patients from Goiania City, 2017-2018.

    Mayaro virus (MAYV) has historically been associated with sylvatic transmission; however, urban outbreaks have been reported in Brazil, including cases of co-detection with dengue virus (DENV). Therefore, we performed a molecular survey to investigate MAYV circulation and cocirculation with DENV within Goiania, a major city in Central-West Brazil. Among 375 subjects with arbovirus-like symptoms, 259 were positive for DENV and 26 for MAYV. Of these, 17 were coinfected with DENV-2, suggesting co-transmission of the viruses. The most common complaints at the time of inclusion were myalgia, headache, fever, arthralgia, retro-orbital pain, and skin rash. No specific symptoms were associated with MAYV when either detected alone or co-detected with DENV, compared to that when DENV was detected alone. Most MAYV-infected subjects were women with no recent travel history to rural/sylvatic areas. Phylogenetic reconstruction indicated that the MAYV identified in this study is closely related with a lineage observed in Peru, belonging to genotype D. Our results corroborate the growing circulation of MAYV in urban environments in Brazil and reinforce the need to implement laboratory diagnosis in the Unified Health System, considering that the clinical manifestations of Mayaro fever are similar to those of other arboviruses, particularly dengue. Furthermore, most cases occurred in association with DENV-2. Further phylogenetic studies are needed to evaluate MAYV, which has not been widely examined
