    'Everyday memory' impairments in autism spectrum disorders

    ‘Everyday memory’ is conceptualised as memory within the context of day-to-day life and, despite its functional relevance, has been little studied in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). In the first study of its kind, 94 adolescents with an ASD and 55 without an ASD completed measures of everyday memory from the Rivermead Behavioural Memory Test (RBMT) and a standard word recall task (Children’s Auditory Verbal Learning Test-2: CAVLT-2). The ASD group showed significant impairments on the RBMT, including in prospective memory, alongside impaired performance on the CAVLT-2. Social and communication ability was significantly associated with prospective remembering in an everyday memory context but not with the CAVLT-2.     Levels of soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1, eicosanoids and cytokines in ascites of patients with liver cirrhosis, peritoneal cancer and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis

    The levels of the eicosanoids leukotriene B4, prostaglandin E2, prostacycline and thromboxane B2, the cytokines interleukin-1ÎČ, interleukin-6 and tumour necrosis factor-α and soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1 were measured in ascites and plasma samples of patients with liver cirrhosis (53), peritoneal cancer (26) and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (10) to assess their value as a possible diagnostic and prognostic parameter in the course of the disease. Soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1, of the eicosanoids prostaglandin E2 and leukotriene B4, and the protein concentration in ascites were all significantly elevated in ascites of patients with peritoneal cancer in comparison to ascites of patients with liver cirrhosis. In ascites of patients with spontaneous bacterial infection interleukin-6 concentration was significantly elevated and the protein concentration was significantly lower in comparison to the other two groups. None of these parameters, however, seems to be of practical use as a diagnostic parameter, as there is an overlap between all the levels of these mediators in ascites of liver cirrhosis, peritoneal cancer and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis group. Soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1 levels were much higher in plasma than in ascites, in contrast to interleukin-6 levels which were much higher in ascites than in plasma. Soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1 in ascites correlated with soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1 in plasma (r = 0.6926, P = 0.0001). Soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1, interleukin-6 and the number of polymorphonuclear cells in peritoneal fluid correlated during episodes of infection in patients with a peritonitis. For this reason soluble intercellular adhesion molecule 1 and interleukin-6 could be of prognostic value for patients with peritonitis

    International audienceHollow cylinders with a diameter in the nanometer range are carving out prime positions in nanoscience. Thanks to their physico-chemical properties, they could be key elements for next-generation nanofluidics devices, for selective molecular sieving, energy conversion or as catalytic nanoreactors. Several difficult problems such as fine diameter and interface control are solved for imogolite nanotubes. This chapter will present an overview of this unique class of clay nanotubes, from their geological occurrence to their synthesis and their applications. In particular, emphasis will be put on providing an up-to-date description of their structure and properties, their synthesis and the strategies developed to modify their interfaces in a controlled manner. Developments on their applications, in particular for polymer/imogolite nanotubes composites, molecular confinement or catalysis, are presented

    The isobutylene-isobutane alkylation process in liquid HF revisited

    Details on the mechanism of HF catalyzed isobutylene-isobutane alkylation were investigated. On the basis of available experimental data and high-level quantum chemical calculations, a detailed reaction mechanism is proposed taking into account solvation effects of the medium. On the basis of our computational results, we explain why the density of the liquid media and stirring rates are the most important parameters to achieve maximum yield of alkylate, in agreement with experimental findings. The ab initio Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics calculations show that isobutylene is irreversibly protonated in the liquid HF medium at higher densities, leading to the ion pair formation, which is shown to be a minimum on the potential energy surface after optimization using periodic boundary conditions. The HF medium solvates preferentially the fluoride anion, which is found as solvated [FHF](-) or solvated F(-)center dot(HF)(3). On the other hand, the tert-butyl cation is weakly solvated, where the closest HF molecules appear at a distance of about 2.9 angstrom with the fluorine termination of an HF chain
