Comparison of Selected Differential Producing, Ultrasonic, and Magnetic Flow Meters

    Get PDF
Flow meters are used to measure flow accurately. There are many different flow meters and it is necessary to know which will function best for specific situations. A wide variety of flow meters were selected for the study to assist in showing that each flow meter has its tradeoffs. The selected meters include: three types of Venturi meters, a wedge meter, a V-cone meter, an electromagnetic flow meter, and an ultrasonic flow meter. The characteristics researched in this study are discharge coefficient (Cd) over a range of Reynolds numbers (Re), head loss across each flow meter, life, and cost of meter. Each meter was tested over a wide range of Re to find the corresponding Cd and head loss. The life and cost of each meter were researched and estimated based on the flow meter companies and local distributor’s findings. With the findings, the tradeoffs are illustrated and will assist buyers in selecting a flow meter that will best fit their needs. While there are more flow meters available than was tested, the current study can direct buyers in a correct process of selecting meters for all situations

The paper address the nature of the principles of the Declaration and the Declaration\u27s relationship to the Constitution and how these related to slavery. The argument is that the Declaration did stand for universal equality of the individual before God and the law and therefore its principles condemned slavery. The Constitution did not embrace slavery even though it failed to ban slavery but did set the foundation for the end of slavery

Quick actuating closure and handling system

    Get PDF
A quick activating closure and handling system, which utilizes conical sections for locking, was developed to allow quick access to the combustor internal components of the 8 ft High Temperature Tunnel. These critical components include the existing methane spraybar, a transpiration cooled nozzle and the new liquid oxygen (LOX) injection system housed within the combustor. A substantial cost savings will be realized once the mechanism is installed since it will substantially reduce the access time and increase the time available for conducting wind tunnel tests. A need exists for more frequent inspections when the wind tunnel operates at the more severe conditions generated by using LOX in the combustor. A loads analysis and a structural (finite element) analysis were conducted to verify that the new closure system is compatible with the existing pressure shell. In addition, strain gages were placed on the pressure vessel to verify how the pressure shell reacts to transient pressure loads. A scale model of the new closure system was built to verify the operation of the conical sections in the locking mechanisms

The Influence of Prices on the Persistence of Adult Undergraduates

We would like to thank the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators and the University of New Orleans College of Education for research grants supporting this research. The views expressed in this paper are the authors and do not represent official policies or positions of NASFAA or the University of New Orleans. This article examines the influence of tuition charges and the amounts of grants, loans, and work awarded on within-year persistence by adult undergraduate students (over 22 years of age) enrolled in public and private four-year colleges. The findings include: 1) adult undergraduates are more likely to be from disadvantaged backgrounds than traditional college-age students; 2) adult undergraduates seem to be more responsive to tuition charges than traditional college-age students; and 3) adults enrolled in public colleges are more sensitive to tuition charges than those enrolled in private colleges

Proteomic analysis of the excretory-secretory products from larval stages of Ascaris suum reveals high abundance of glycosyl hydrolases

Background: Ascaris lumbricoides and Ascaris suum are socioeconomically important and widespread parasites of humans and pigs, respectively. The excretory-secretory (ES) molecules produced and presented at the parasite-host interface during the different phases of tissue invasion and migration are likely to play critical roles in the induction and development of protective immune and other host responses. Methodology/Principal Findings: The aim of this study was to identify the ES proteins of the different larval stages (L3-egg, L3-lung and L4) by LC-MS/MS. In total, 106 different proteins were identified, 20 in L3-egg, 45 in L3-lung stage and 58 in L4. Although most of the proteins identified were stage-specific, 15 were identified in the ES products of at least two stages. Two proteins, i.e. a 14-3-3-like protein and a serpin-like protein, were present in the ES products from the three different larval stages investigated. Interestingly, a comparison of ES products from L4 with those of L3-egg and L3-lung showed an abundance of metabolic enzymes, particularly glycosyl hydrolases. Further study indicated that most of these glycolytic enzymes were transcriptionally upregulated from L4 onwards, with a peak in the adult stage, particularly in intestinal tissue. This was also confirmed by enzymatic assays, showing the highest glycosidase activity in protein extracts from adult worms gut. Conclusions/Significance: The present proteomic analysis provides important information on the host-parasite interaction and the molecular of migratory stages of A. suum. In particularly, the high transcriptionally upregulated of glycosyl hydrolases from L4 onwards reveals indicate that the degradation of complex carbohydrates forms an essential part of the energy metabolism of this parasite once it establishes in the small intestine

"Conservation Biology in Sub-Saharan Africa comprehensively explores the challenges and potential solutions to key conservation issues in Sub-Saharan Africa. Easy to read, this lucid and accessible textbook includes fifteen chapters that cover a full range of conservation topics, including threats to biodiversity, environmental laws, and protected areas management, as well as related topics such as sustainability, poverty, and human-wildlife conflict. This rich resource also includes a background discussion of what conservation biology is, a wide range of theoretical approaches to the subject, and concrete examples of conservation practice in specific African contexts. Strategies are outlined to protect biodiversity whilst promoting economic development in the region. Boxes covering specific themes written by scientists who live and work throughout the region are included in each chapter, together with recommended readings and suggested discussion topics. Each chapter also includes an extensive bibliography. Conservation Biology in Sub-Saharan Africa provides the most up-to-date study in the field. It is an essential resource, available on-line without charge, for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as a handy guide for professionals working to stop the rapid loss of biodiversity in Sub-Saharan Africa and elsewhere.

Studi tentang sertifikasi hasil tangkapan ikan di Pelabuhan Perikanan Samudera Bitung (Study on Fish Catch Certification in Samudera Bitung Fishing Port)

European Union is nowadays the largest market in the world for fisheries products; it is also the strickest country in controlling the food security. It has also established requirements for marine fisheries products (fresh or processed products) exported directly or indirectly to European Union must be free of IUU Fshing. The fish catch certification follows the legal aspects and national reguaations in line with international regulations. Fish catch certification consists of Initial Sheet, Derivative Sheet, and Simplified Derivative Sheet. The objectives of the study are to know the issuance procedure of fish catch certificate in the form of preliminary document, the issuance procedure of fich catch certificate iin the form of derivative document as export supporting document, and the issuance procedure of fish catch certificate in simple form of derivative document. This study was carried out in September - November 2016 in Samudera Bitung Fisheries Port. The initial sheet is used for >20 GT-fishing vessels and proposed by the ship owner or its representative, the derivative sheet was used for the fish processing unit, and the simplified derivative sheet was export and fishing document for 20 GT, dokumen Lembar Turunan untuk unit pengolahan ikan, dan dokumen Lembar Turunan yang diserhanakan sebagai dokumen ekspor dan penangkapan ikan bagi kapal penangkap berukuran  < 20 GT.
