    A search for rapid optical variability in radio-quiet quasars

    The detection of rapid variability on a time-scale of hours in radio-quiet quasars (RQQSOs) could be a powerful discriminator between starburst, accretion disc and relativistic jet models of these sources. This paper contains an account of a dedicated search for rapid optical variability in RQQSOs. The technique used differential photometry between the RQQSO and stars in the same field of view of the CCD. The 23 RQQSOs that were observed all have high luminosities (-27 1. The total amount of observation time was about 60 hours and these observations are part of an ongoing programme, started in September 1990, to search for rapid variability in RQQSOs. No evidence for short-term variability greater than about 0.1 magnitudes was detected in any of the 23 sources, however long-term variability was recorded for the radio-quiet quasar PG 2112+059. The finding charts are included here because they identify the RQQSO and the reference stars used in the photometry, and hence are available for use by other observers.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&AS. 10 pages, 3 figures.     The need for higher degrees by research for complementary medicine practitioners

The need for research in complementary medicine (CM), which is meaningful and relevant within a real world setting, has been growing since the advent of the evidence-based practice movement. This need has not, however, been successfully addressed due to both insufficient interest amongst the research population and issues with the usefulness of much of the completed research to inform the practical needs of clinicians and policy makers. These issues may be attenuated by seeing an increased number of CM practitioners involved in future research projects. However, the absence of appropriate and focused research training for CM practitioners may hinder the number of practitioners pursuing research careers. With this in mind, there is a real need to see an increase in both the availability of higher degrees by research at both undergraduate and postgraduate level for CM practitioners as well as the institutions offering these degrees. In particular, ensuring that CM practitioners are able to receive primary supervision of a research project by researchers with a detailed understanding of CM is vital if effective and meaningful CM research, which is well-supported within higher education institutions, is to occur

    Properties of sub-diffraction limited focusing by optical phase conjugation

    Recent work has demonstrated sub-diffraction limited focusing using time-reversal mirrors and sources in scattering media at microwave frequencies. We numerically investigate the possibility of observing analogous effects in the optical domain using small cylindrical scatterers of realistic dielectric materials combined with an enclosing optical phase conjugate mirror in two-dimensional geometries. Such focusing is possible but appears not to significantly exceed the focusing available from an equivalent homogenized material, and is highly sensitive to precise scatterer configuration. © 2010 Optical Society of America

    Meta-model Pruning

    Large and complex meta-models such as those of Uml and its profiles are growing due to modelling and inter-operability needs of numerous\ud stakeholders. The complexity of such meta-models has led to coining\ud of the term meta-muddle. Individual users often exercise only a small\ud view of a meta-muddle for tasks ranging from model creation to construction\ud of model transformations. What is the effective meta-model that represents\ud this view? We present a flexible meta-model pruning algorithm and\ud tool to extract effective meta-models from a meta-muddle. We use\ud the notion of model typing for meta-models to verify that the algorithm\ud generates a super-type of the large meta-model representing the meta-muddle.\ud This implies that all programs written using the effective meta-model\ud will work for the meta-muddle hence preserving backward compatibility.\ud All instances of the effective meta-model are also instances of the\ud meta-muddle. We illustrate how pruning the original Uml metamodel\ud produces different effective meta-models

    Regulation of Global Gene Expression in Human Loa loa Infection Is a Function of Chronicity

    Infection with the filarial parasite Loa loa causes a parasite-specific downregulation of T cell responses. However, differences exist (clinical and immunologic) between patients born and living in filarial endemic regions (endemics) and those who become infected during travel or short-term residency (expatriates). T cell responses are more depressed in endemics while expatriates have more clinical “allergic-type” symptoms. In this study, we showed that these differences reflect transcriptional differences within the T cell compartment. Using microarrays, we examined global gene expression in both CD4+ and CD8+ T cells of microfilaremic endemic and expatriate patients and found differences not only ex vivo, but also to parasite and, for CD8+ cells, to nonparasite antigens. Functional analysis showed that endemic patients expressed genes linked to inflammatory disease and caspase associated cell death at homeostasis while expatriates tended to have a more activation-induced gene profile at homeostasis and a CD4+ inflammatory response to parasite antigen. Patient groups were similar in their CD4+ response to nonparasite antigen but strongly differed in their CD8+ responses, demonstrating the potential global ramifications of chronic, longstanding infection.
