Novel diffusion mechanism on the GaAs(001) surface: the role of adatom-dimer interaction
Employing first principles total energy calculations we have studied the
behavior of Ga and Al adatoms on the GaAs(001)-beta2 surface. The adsorption
site and two relevant diffusion channels are identified. The channels are
characterized by different adatom-surface dimer interaction. Both affect in a
novel way the adatom migration: in one channel the diffusing adatom jumps
across the surface dimers and leaves the dimer bonds intact, in the other one
the surface dimer bonds are broken. The two channels are taken into account to
derive effective adatom diffusion barriers. From the diffusion barriers we
conclude a strong diffusion anisotropy for both Al and Ga adatoms with the
direction of fastest diffusion parallel to the surface dimers. In agreement
with experimental observations we find higher diffusion barriers for Al than

Leading-effect vs. Risk-taking in Dynamic Tournaments: Evidence from a Real-life Randomized Experiment
Two 'order effects' may emerge in dynamic tournaments with information feedback. First, participants adjust effort across stages, which could advantage the leading participant who faces a larger 'effective prize' after an initial victory (leading-effect). Second, participants lagging behind may increase risk at the final stage as they have 'nothing to lose' (risk-taking). We use a randomized natural experiment in professional two-game soccer tournaments where the treatment (order of a stage-specific advantage) and team characteristics, e.g. ability, are independent. We develop an identification strategy to test for leading-effects controlling for risk-taking. We find no evidence of leading-effects and negligible risk-taking effects
Body odor quality predicts behavioral attractiveness in humans
Growing effort is being made to understand how different attractive physical traits co-vary within individuals, partly because this might indicate an underlying index of genetic quality. In humans, attention has focused on potential markers of quality such as facial attractiveness, axillary odor quality, the second-to-fourth digit (2D:4D) ratio and body mass index (BMI). Here we extend this approach to include visually-assessed kinesic cues (nonverbal behavior linked to movement) which are statistically independent of structural physical traits. The utility of such kinesic cues in mate assessment is controversial, particularly during everyday conversational contexts, as they could be unreliable and susceptible to deception. However, we show here that the attractiveness of nonverbal behavior, in 20 male participants, is predicted by perceived quality of their axillary body odor. This finding indicates covariation between two desirable traits in different sensory modalities. Depending on two different rating contexts (either a simple attractiveness rating or a rating for long-term partners by 10 female raters not using hormonal contraception), we also found significant relationships between perceived attractiveness of nonverbal behavior and BMI, and between axillary odor ratings and 2D:4D ratio. Axillary odor pleasantness was the single attribute that consistently predicted attractiveness of nonverbal behavior. Our results demonstrate that nonverbal kinesic cues could reliably reveal mate quality, at least in males, and could corroborate and contribute to mate assessment based on other physical traits
Academic freedom in Europe: time for a Magna Charta?
This paper is a preliminary attempt to establish a working definition of academic freedom for the European Union states. The paper details why such a definition is required for the European Union and then examines some of the difficulties of defining academic freedom. By drawing upon experience of the legal difficulties beset by the concept in the USA and building on previous analyses of constitutional and legislative protection for academic freedom, and of legal regulations concerning institutional governance and academic tenure, a working definition of academic freedom is then derived. The resultant definition which, it is suggested, could form the basis for a European Magna Charta Libertatis Academicae, goes beyond traditional discussions of academic freedom by specifying not only the rights inherent in the concept but also its accompanying duties, necessary limitations and safeguards. Secondary school pupils' preferences for different types of structured grouping practices
The aim of this paper is to explore pupils’ preferences for particular types of grouping practices an area neglected in earlier research focusing on the personal and social outcomes of ability grouping. The sample comprised over 5,000 year 9 pupils (aged 13-14 years) in 45 mixed secondary comprehensive schools in England. The schools represented three levels of ability grouping in the lower school (years 7 to 9). Pupils responded to a questionnaire which explored the types of grouping that they preferred and the reasons for their choices. The majority of pupils preferred setting, although this was mediated by their set placement, type of school, socio-economic status and gender. The key reason given for this preference was that it enabled work to be matched to learning needs. The evolution and storage of primitive melts in the Eastern Volcanic Zone of Iceland: the 10 ka Grímsvötn tephra series (i.e. the Saksunarvatn ash)
Major, trace and volatile elements were measured in a suite of primitive macrocrysts and melt inclusions from the thickest layer of the 10 ka Grímsvötn tephra series (i.e. Saksunarvatn ash) at Lake Hvítárvatn in central Iceland. In the absence of primitive tholeiitic eruptions (MgO > 7 wt.%) within the Eastern Volcanic Zone (EVZ) of Iceland, these crystal and inclusion compositions provide an important insight into magmatic processes in this volcanically productive region. Matrix glass compositions show strong similarities with glass compositions from the AD 1783–84 Laki eruption, confirming the affinity of the tephra series with the Grímsvötn volcanic system. Macrocrysts can be divided into a primitive assemblage of zoned macrocryst cores (An_78–An_92, Mg#_cpx = 82–87, Fo_79.5–Fo_87) and an evolved assemblage consisting of unzoned macrocrysts and the rims of zoned macrocrysts (An_60–An_68, Mg#_cpx = 71–78, Fo_70–Fo_76). Although the evolved assemblage is close to being in equilibrium with the matrix glass, trace element disequilibrium between primitive and evolved assemblages indicates that they were derived from different distributions of mantle melt compositions. Juxtaposition of disequilibrium assemblages probably occurred during disaggregation of incompatible trace element-depleted mushes (mean La/Yb_melt = 2.1) into aphyric and incompatible trace element-enriched liquids (La/Yb_melt = 3.6) shortly before the growth of the evolved macrocryst assemblage. Post-entrapment modification of plagioclase-hosted melt inclusions has been minimal and high-Mg# inclusions record differentiation and mixing of compositionally variable mantle melts that are amongst the most primitive liquids known from the EVZ. Coupled high field strength element (HFSE) depletion and incompatible trace element enrichment in a subset of primitive plagioclase-hosted melt inclusions can be accounted for by inclusion formation following plagioclase dissolution driven by interaction with plagioclase-undersaturated melts. Thermobarometric calculations indicate that final crystal-melt equilibration within the evolved assemblage occurred at ~1140°C and 0.0–1.5 kbar. Considering the large volume of the erupted tephra and textural evidence for rapid crystallisation of the evolved assemblage, 0.0–1.5 kbar is considered unlikely to represent a pressure of long-term magma accumulation and storage. Multiple thermometers indicate that the primitive assemblage crystallised at high temperatures of 1240–1300°C. Different barometers, however, return markedly different crystallisation depth estimates. Raw clinopyroxene-melt pressures of 5.5–7.5 kbar conflict with apparent melt inclusion entrapment pressures of 1.4 kbar. After applying a correction derived from published experimental data, clinopyroxene-melt equilibria return mid-crustal pressures of 4±1.5 kbar, which are consistent with pressures estimated from the major element content of primitive melt inclusions. Long-term storage of primitive magmas in the mid-crust implies that low CO_2 concentrations measured in primitive plagioclase-hosted inclusions (262–800 ppm) result from post-entrapment CO_2 loss during transport through the shallow crust. In order to reconstruct basaltic plumbing system geometries from petrological data with greater confidence, mineral-melt equilibrium models require refinement at pressures of magma storage in Iceland. Microbial community composition of deep-sea corals from the Red Sea provides insight into functional adaption to a unique environment
Microbes associated with deep-sea corals remain poorly studied. The lack of symbiotic algae suggests that associated microbes may play a fundamental role in maintaining a viable coral host via acquisition and recycling of nutrients. Here we employed 16 S rRNA gene sequencing to study bacterial communities of three deep-sea scleractinian corals from the Red Sea, Dendrophyllia sp., Eguchipsammia fistula, and Rhizotrochus typus. We found diverse, species-specific microbiomes, distinct from the surrounding seawater. Microbiomes were comprised of few abundant bacteria, which constituted the majority of sequences (up to 58% depending on the coral species). In addition, we found a high diversity of rare bacteria (taxa at 90% of all bacteria). Interestingly, we identified anaerobic bacteria, potentially providing metabolic functions at low oxygen conditions, as well as bacteria harboring the potential to degrade crude oil components. Considering the presence of oil and gas fields in the Red Sea, these bacteria may unlock this carbon source for the coral host. In conclusion, the prevailing environmental conditions of the deep Red Sea (>20 °C, <2 mg oxygen L−1) may require distinct functional adaptations, and our data suggest that bacterial communities may contribute to coral functioning in this challenging environment.This work was supported from baseline funds to CRV and under the Center Competitive Funding

Institutional assessment as an instrument of rationalization back to the school as a formal organisation
O papel central da avaliação, da avaliação institucional e dos
processos de garantia da qualidade de escolas e universidades
nas políticas educacionais é objeto de discussão, também
considerando a reforma do Estado. As teorias da nova gestão
pública e as perspectivas gestionárias são consideradas como
algumas das principais fontes de inspiração e de legitimação no
contexto dominante de uma educação contábil. Dados empíricos
preliminares resultantes do processo de avaliação externa de
escolas básicas e secundárias portuguesas são apresentados
e interpretados de acordo com os principais conceitos e
representações organizacionais de escola presentes nos relatórios
externos. Examinando algumas das imagens e dos significados de
escola, cultura de escola, autonomia, objetivos, liderança e eficácia
presentes nos relatórios de avaliação, o autor releva a importância
das imagens formais, racionais e burocráticas de escolas. Várias
questões de investigação são apresentadas tendo por base aquilo
a que o autor chama o processo da hiperburocratização das
organizações educativas. Algumas dimensões do conceito de
burocracia de Max Weber são revisitadas, em articulação com
perspectivas neocientíficas de garantia da qualidade e com as
tecnologias da informação e comunicação. O autor sugere que
maior relevância deve ser atribuída aos modelos formais e racionais
de interpretação das organizações educativas, pois os processos de
avaliação e de garantia da qualidade estão a contribuir para a
formalização de escolas e universidades e para a intensificação do
seu processo de racionalização, isto é, para a emergência de uma
imagem analítica das escolas como hiperburocracias.The central role of evaluation, institutional assessment and quality
assurance processes of schools and universities in education policy
is object of discussion also considering the reform of the state. New
Public Management theories and managerialist perspectives are
considered some of the main sources of inspiration and legitimation
in the dominant context of an audit education. Preliminary
empirical data from external assessment of Portuguese primary and
secondary schools are introduced and interpreted according to the
main concepts and organizational representations of school found
in external reports. Examining some of the central organizational
images and meanings of school, school culture, autonomy, goals,
leadership and effectiveness included in the external reviews, the
author stresses the importance of formal, rational and bureaucratic
images of schools. Several new research questions are presented
for further inquiry based on the hypothesis of what it is called by
the author the process of hyperbureaucratization of educational
organizations. Some of the main dimensions of the concept of
bureaucracy as presented by Max Weber are revisited in close
relation with neo-scientific approaches of quality assurance and
taking in consideration the use of information and communication
technologies. Accordingly the author suggests that much more
importance must be given to formal and rational models of
interpreting educational organizations because assessment and
quality assurance procedures are contributing to the formalization
of schools and universities and to the intensification of their process
of rationalization, i. e., to the emergence of an analytic image of

Crystal and melt inclusion timescales reveal the evolution of magma migration before eruption
Volatile element concentrations measured in melt inclusions are a key tool used to understand magma migration and degassing, although their original values may be affected by different re-equilibration processes. Additionally, the inclusion-bearing crystals can have a wide range of origins and ages, further complicating the interpretation of magmatic processes. To clarify some of these issues, here we combined olivine diffusion chronometry and melt inclusion data from the 2008 eruption of Llaima volcano (Chile). We found that magma intrusion occurred about 4 years before the eruption at a minimum depth of approximately 8 km. Magma migration and reaction became shallower with time, and about 6 months before the eruption magma reached 3–4 km depth. This can be linked to reported seismicity and ash emissions.
