Micro-geographic risk factors for malarial infection.
BACKGROUND: Knowledge of geography is integral to the study of insect-borne infectious disease such as malaria. This study was designed to evaluate whether geographic parameters are associated with malarial infection in the East Sepik province of Papua New Guinea (PNG), a remote area where malaria is a major cause of morbidity and mortality.
METHODS: A global positioning system (GPS) unit was used at each village to collect elevation, latitude and longitude data. Concurrently, a sketch map of each village was generated and the villages were sub-divided into regions of roughly equal populations. Blood samples were taken from subjects in each region using filter paper collection. The samples were later processed using nested PCR for qualitative determination of malarial infection. The area was mapped using the GPS-information and overlaid with prevalence data. Data tables were examined using traditional chi square statistical techniques. A logistic regression analysis was then used to determine the significance of geographic risk factors including, elevation, distance from administrative centre and village of residence.
RESULTS: Three hundred and thirty-two samples were included (24% of the total estimated population). Ninety-six were positive, yielding a prevalence of 29%. Chi square testing within each village found a non-random distribution of cases across sub-regions (p < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression techniques suggested malarial infection changed with elevation (OR = 0.64 per 10 m, p < 0.05) and distance from administrative centre (OR = 1.3 per 100 m, p < 0.05).
CONCLUSION: These results suggest that malarial infection is significantly and independently associated with lower elevation and greater distance from administrative centre in a rural area in PNG. This type of analysis can provide information that may be used to target specific areas in developing countries for malaria prevention and treatment
Sildenafil Citrate-Restored eNOS and PDE5 Regulation in Sickle Cell Mouse Penis Prevents Priapism Via Control of Oxidative/Nitrosative Stress
Sildenafil citrate revolutionized the practice of sexual medicine upon its federal regulatory agency approval approximately 15 years ago as the prototypical phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor indicated for the treatment of male erectile dysfunction. We now provide scientific support for its alternative use in the management of priapism, a clinical disorder of prolonged and uncontrolled penile erection. Sildenafil administered continuously to sickle cell mice, which show a priapism phenotype, reverses oxidative/nitrosative stress effects in the penis, mainly via reversion of uncoupled endothelial nitric oxide synthase to the functional coupled state of the enzyme, which in turn corrects aberrant signaling and function of the nitric oxide/cyclic GMP/protein kinase G/phosphodiesterase type 5 cascade. Priapism tendencies in these mice are reverted partially toward normal neurostimulated erection frequencies and durations after sildenafil treatment in association with normalized cyclic GMP concentration, protein kinase G activity and phosphodiesterase type 5 activity in the penis. Thus, sildenafil exerts pleiotropic effects in the penis that extend to diverse erection disorders. © 2013 Bivalacqua et al
Error Corrective Boosting for Learning Fully Convolutional Networks with Limited Data
Training deep fully convolutional neural networks (F-CNNs) for semantic image
segmentation requires access to abundant labeled data. While large datasets of
unlabeled image data are available in medical applications, access to manually
labeled data is very limited. We propose to automatically create auxiliary
labels on initially unlabeled data with existing tools and to use them for
pre-training. For the subsequent fine-tuning of the network with manually
labeled data, we introduce error corrective boosting (ECB), which emphasizes
parameter updates on classes with lower accuracy. Furthermore, we introduce
SkipDeconv-Net (SD-Net), a new F-CNN architecture for brain segmentation that
combines skip connections with the unpooling strategy for upsampling. The
SD-Net addresses challenges of severe class imbalance and errors along
boundaries. With application to whole-brain MRI T1 scan segmentation, we
generate auxiliary labels on a large dataset with FreeSurfer and fine-tune on
two datasets with manual annotations. Our results show that the inclusion of
auxiliary labels and ECB yields significant improvements. SD-Net segments a 3D
scan in 7 secs in comparison to 30 hours for the closest multi-atlas
segmentation method, while reaching similar performance. It also outperforms

Visual Similarity Perception of Directed Acyclic Graphs: A Study on Influencing Factors
While visual comparison of directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) is commonly
encountered in various disciplines (e.g., finance, biology), knowledge about
humans' perception of graph similarity is currently quite limited. By graph
similarity perception we mean how humans perceive commonalities and differences
in graphs and herewith come to a similarity judgment. As a step toward filling
this gap the study reported in this paper strives to identify factors which
influence the similarity perception of DAGs. In particular, we conducted a
card-sorting study employing a qualitative and quantitative analysis approach
to identify 1) groups of DAGs that are perceived as similar by the participants
and 2) the reasons behind their choice of groups. Our results suggest that
similarity is mainly influenced by the number of levels, the number of nodes on

Distribution of sound pressure around a singing cricket: radiation pattern and asymmetry in the sound field
Male field crickets generate calls to attract distant females through tegminal stridulation: the
rubbing together of the overlying right wing which bears a file of cuticular teeth against the
underlying left wing which carries a sclerotised scraper. During stridulation, specialised areas of
membrane on both wings are set into oscillating vibrations to produce acoustic radiation. The
location of females is unknown to the calling males and thus increasing effective signal range in all
directions will maximise transmission effectiveness. However, producing an omnidirectional sound
field of high sound pressure levels may be problematic due to the mechanical asymmetry found in
this sound generation system. Mechanical asymmetry occurs by the right wing coming to partially
cover the left wing during the closing stroke phase of stridulation. As such, it is hypothesised that the
sound field on the left-wing side of the animal will contain lower sound pressure components than
on the right-wing side as a result of this coverage. This hypothesis was tested using a novel method
to accurately record a high resolution, three dimensional mapping of sound pressure levels around
restrained Gryllus bimaculatus field crickets singing under pharmacological stimulation. The results
indicate that a bilateral asymmetry is present across individuals, with greater amplitude components
present in the right wing side of the animal. Individual variation in sound pressure to either the right
or left-wing side is also observed. However, statistically significant differences in bilateral sound field
asymmetry as presented here may not affect signalling in the field
Mitochondrial DNA Copy Number Is Associated with Breast Cancer Risk
Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) copy number in peripheral blood is associated with increased risk of several cancers. However, data from prospective studies on mtDNA copy number and breast cancer risk are lacking. We evaluated the association between mtDNA copy number in peripheral blood and breast cancer risk in a nested case-control study of 183 breast cancer cases with pre-diagnostic blood samples and 529 individually matched controls among participants of the Singapore Chinese Health Study. The mtDNA copy number was measured using real time PCR. Conditional logistic regression analyses showed that there was an overall positive association between mtDNA copy number and breast cancer risk (Ptrend = 0.01). The elevated risk for higher mtDNA copy numbers was primarily seen for women with <3 years between blood draw and cancer diagnosis; ORs (95% CIs) for 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th quintile of mtDNA copy number were 1.52 (0.61, 3.82), 2.52 (1.03, 6.12), 3.12 (1.31, 7.43), and 3.06 (1.25, 7.47), respectively, compared with the 1st quintile (Ptrend = 0.004). There was no association between mtDNA copy number and breast cancer risk among women who donated a blood sample ≥3 years before breast cancer diagnosis (Ptrend = 0.41). This study supports a prospective association between increased mtDNA copy number and breast cancer risk that is dependent on the time interval between blood collection and breast cancer diagnosis. Future studies are warranted to confirm these findings and to elucidate the biological role of mtDNA copy number in breast cancer risk. © 2013 Thyagarajan et al
Zone center phonons of the orthorhombic RMnO3 (R = Pr, Eu, Tb, Dy, Ho) perovskites
A short range force constant model (SRFCM) has been applied for the first
time to investigate the phonons in RMnO3 (R = Pr, Eu, Tb, Dy, Ho) perovskites
in their orthorhombic phase. The calculations with 17 stretching and bending
force constants provide good agreement for the observed Raman frequencies. The
infrared frequencies have been assigned for the first time.

This is a report on the CNS barrier congress held in London, UK, March 22-23rd 2017 and sponsored by Kisaco Research Ltd. The two 1-day sessions were chaired by John Greenwood and Margareta Hammarlund-Udenaes, respectively, and each session ended with a discussion led by the chair. Speakers consisted of invited academic researchers studying the brain barriers in relation to neurological diseases and industry researchers studying new methods to deliver therapeutics to treat neurological diseases. Freezing and chemical preservatives alter the stable isotope values of carbon and nitrogen of the Asiatic clam (Corbicula fluminea)
We tested the impacts of most common sample preservation methods used for aquatic sample materials on the stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen in clams, a typical baseline indicator organism for many aquatic food web studies utilising stable isotope analysis (SIA). In addition to common chemical preservatives ethanol and formalin, we also assessed the potential impacts of freezing on δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N values and compared the preserved samples against freshly dried and analysed samples. All preservation methods, including freezing, had significant impacts on δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N values and the effects in general were greater on the carbon isotope values (1.3-2.2% difference) than on the nitrogen isotope values (0.9-1.0% difference). However, the impacts produced by the preservation were rather consistent within each method during the whole 1 year experiment allowing these to be accounted for, if clams are intended for use in retrospective stable isotope studies
