A semiclassical theory of the Anderson transition
We study analytically the metal-insulator transition in a disordered
conductor by combining the self-consistent theory of localization with the one
parameter scaling theory. We provide explicit expressions of the critical
exponents and the critical disorder as a function of the spatial
dimensionality, . The critical exponent controlling the divergence of
the localization length at the transition is found to be . This result confirms that the upper critical dimension is
infinity. Level statistics are investigated in detail. We show that the two
level correlation function decays exponentially and the number variance is
linear with a slope which is an increasing function of the spatial

Communication and mass media in delillo’s white noise and pynchon’s the crying of lot 49
White Noise and The Crying of Lot 49 are considered Image Fiction novels, works that try to make visible the influence that mass media had on modern era. This is exemplified in both novels, as media deeply affect their plot’s development as well as the characters’ evolution and ways of communicating. This essay focuses on this from three main points of view: the extent to which the audience engages with the media in both works, the extent to which media become the only source of information and the consequences this may have, and the importance of concepts such as “noise,” language or drugs in both novels.White Noise y The Crying of Lot 49 se clasifican como “Novelas de imagen y ficción,” obras que tratan de hacer visible la influencia que los medios de comunicación tuvieron en la era moderna. Classical singularities and Semi-Poisson statistics in quantum chaos and disordered systems
We investigate a 1D disordered Hamiltonian with a non analytical step-like
dispersion relation whose level statistics is exactly described by Semi-Poisson
statistics(SP). It is shown that this result is robust, namely, does not depend
neither on the microscopic details of the potential nor on a magnetic flux but
only on the type of non-analyticity. We also argue that a deterministic kicked
rotator with a non-analytical step-like potential has the same spectral
properties. Semi-Poisson statistics (SP), typical of pseudo-integrable
billiards, has been frequently claimed to describe critical statistics, namely,
the level statistics of a disordered system at the Anderson transition (AT).
However we provide convincing evidence they are indeed different: each of them

Anderson transition in systems with chiral symmetry
Anderson localization is a universal quantum feature caused by destructive
interference. On the other hand chiral symmetry is a key ingredient in
different problems of theoretical physics: from nonperturbative QCD to highly
doped semiconductors. We investigate the interplay of these two phenomena in
the context of a three-dimensional disordered system. We show that chiral
symmetry induces an Anderson transition (AT) in the region close to the band
center. Typical properties at the AT such as multifractality and critical
statistics are quantitatively affected by this additional symmetry. The origin
of the AT has been traced back to the power-law decay of the eigenstates; this

The relationship of drug reimbursement with the price and the quality of pharmaceutical innovations
This paper studies the strategic interaction between pharmaceutical firms' pricing decisions and government agencies' reimbursement decisions which discriminate between patients by giving reimbursement rights to patients for whom the drug is most effective. We show that if the reimbursement decision preceeds the pricing decision, the agency only reimburses some patients if the private and public health benefits from the new drug diverge. That is, when (i) there are large externalities of consuming the drug and (ii) the difference in costs between the new drug and the alternative treatment is large. Alternatively, if the firm can commit to a price in advance of the reimbursement decision, we identify a strategic effect which implies that by committing to a high price ex ante, the firm can force a listing outcome and make the agency more willing to reimburse than in the absence of commitment
Aspects of reduction and transformation of Lagrangian systems with symmetry
This paper contains results on geometric Routh reduction and it is a
continuation of a previous paper where a new class of transformations is
introduced between Lagrangian systems obtained after Routh reduction. In
general, these reduced Lagrangian systems have magnetic force terms and are
singular in the sense that the Lagrangian does not depend on some velocity
components. The main purpose of this paper is to show that the Routh reduction
process itself is entirely captured by the application of such a new

Multi-sensor system using plastic optical fibers for intrinsically safe level measurements
A system for measuring liquid level in multiple tanks using optical fibe technology has been developed. Oil fiel service industry or any sector requiring liquid level measurements in flammabl atmospheres can be benefite from this intrinsically safe technology. The device used a single lens for the emitting and receiving fibe and it is based on amplitude variations as a function of the liquid distance and not in time of fligh or phase detection. Being the firs fiber-opti liquid level sensor with those characteristics for long ranges (>200 cm). A simple model to describe their behavior has been derived and tested on two prototypes. A Monte-Carlo method is used to fi the experimental data and obtain the model parameters. High accuracy between experimental data and fitte curve is obtained. The prototypes have a good linearity, better than 1.5% FS (full scale). Sensor heads are made of plastic optical fiber (POF) that are easy to handle, flexible and economical. They are excited by 650 nm lasers, housed in ST-connectors to obtain compact and rough prototypes. Optical multiplexing is used to increase the measuring safety area. Frequency division multiplexing is used to address each sensor head. A discussion about the influenc of tilts and aberrations is also included.Publicad
Is it possible to observe experimentally a metal-insulator transition in ultra cold atoms?
Kicked rotors with certain non-analytic potentials avoid dynamical
localization and undergo a metal-insulator transition. We show that typical
properties of this transition are still present as the non-analyticity is
progressively smoothed out provided that the smoothing is less than a certain
limiting value. We have identified a smoothing dependent time scale such that
full dynamical localization is absent and the quantum momentum distribution
develops power-law tails with anomalous decay exponents as in the case of a
conductor at the metal-insulator transition. We discuss under what conditions
these findings may be verified experimentally by using ultra cold atoms
techniques. It is found that ultra-cold atoms can indeed be utilized for the
experimental investigation of the metal-insulator transition.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure
