The Search for Neutrino Oscillations numubar->nuebar with KARMEN
The neutrino experiment KARMEN is situated at the beam stop neutrino source
ISIS. It provides numu's, nue's and numubar's in equal intensities from the pi+
mu+ decay at rest (DAR). The oscillation channel numub->nueb is investigated in
the appearance mode with a 56t liquid scintillation calorimeter at a mean
distance of 17.7m from the nu source looking for p(nue,e+)n reactions. The
cosmic induced background for this oscillation search could be reduced by a
factor of 40 due to an additional veto counter installed in 1996. In the data
collected through 1997 and 1998 no potential oscillation event was observed.
Using a unified approach to small signals this leads to an upper limit for the
mixing angle of sin**2(2t) < 1.3x10^{-3} (90%CL) at large Dm**2. The excluded
area in (sin**2(2t),Dm**2) covers almost entirely the favored region defined by
the LSND numub->nueb evidence.Comment: Proceedings Contribution to Neutrino98 in Takayama, Japan, June 4-9,

Cave-adapted evolution in the North American amblyopsid fishes inferred using phylogenomics and geometric morphometrics
© 2020 The Authors. Evolution © 2020 The Society for the Study of Evolution. Cave adaptation has evolved repeatedly across the Tree of Life, famously leading to pigmentation and eye degeneration and loss, yet its macroevolutionary implications remain poorly understood. We use the North American amblyopsid fishes, a family spanning a wide degree of cave adaptation, to examine the impact of cave specialization on the modes and tempo of evolution. We reconstruct evolutionary relationships using ultraconserved element loci, estimate the ancestral histories of eye-state, and examine the impact of cave adaptation on body shape evolution. Our phylogenomic analyses provide a well-supported hypothesis for amblyopsid evolutionary relationships. The obligate blind cavefishes form a clade and the cave-facultative eyed spring cavefishes are nested within the obligate cavefishes. Using ancestral state reconstruction, we find support for at least two independent subterranean colonization events within the Amblyopsidae. Eyed and blind fishes have different body shapes, but not different rates of body shape evolution. North American amblyopsids highlight the complex nature of cave-adaptive evolution and the necessity to include multiple lines of evidence to uncover the underlying processes involved in the loss of complex traits
Sensitivity to the KARMEN Timing Anomaly at MiniBooNE
We present sensitivities for the MiniBooNE experiment to a rare exotic pion
decay producing a massive particle, Q^0. This type of decay represents one
possible explanation for the timing anomaly reported by the KARMEN
collaboration. MiniBooNE will be able to explore an area of the KARMEN signal
that has not yet been investigated
Plasma procalcitonin concentrations are increased in dogs with sepsis
Sepsis, the life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection, is difficult to identify and to prognosticate for. In people with sepsis, procalcitonin (PCT) measurement aids diagnosis, enables therapeutic monitoring and improves prognostic accuracy. This study used a commercial canine PCT assay to measure plasma PCT concentrations in dogs with gastric dilatation volvulus (GDV) syndrome and in dogs with sepsis. It was hypothesised that dogs with GDV syndrome and with sepsis have greater plasma PCT concentrations than healthy dogs and that dogs with sepsis have greater PCT concentrations than dogs with GDV syndrome. Before analysing canine plasma samples, the ability of the assay to identify canine PCT, in addition to assay imprecision and the lower limit of detection were established. The assay had low imprecision with coefficients of variation 644.5 per cent. The lower limit of detection was 3.4 pg/ml. Plasma PCT concentrations were measured in 20 dogs with sepsis, in 32 dogs with GDV syndrome and in 52 healthy dogs. Median (IQR) PCT concentration in dogs with sepsis 78.7 pg/ml (39.1-164.7) was significantly greater than in healthy dogs 49.8 pg/ml (36.2-63.7) (P=0.019), but there were no significant differences between PCT concentrations in dogs with GDV syndrome and controls (P=0.072) or between dogs with sepsis and GDV syndrome (P=1.000). Dogs with sepsis have significantly increased plasma PCT concentrations compared with healthy dogs, although considerable overlap between these populations was identified. Future investigations should confirm this finding in other populations and evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic value of PCT in dogs with sepsis
