On the C0 compactness of the set of the solutions of the Yamabe equation
AbstractOn a compact Riemannian manifold, we talk again on the C0 compactness of the set of the solutions of the Yamabe equation. Among other results, we give here a very simple proof of the compactness of this set when the conformal Laplacian L is invertible, except on the standard sphere of course
Modeling and simulation of drying operation in PVC powder production line: a pneumatic dryer model
A one-dimensional steady-state model is developed to simulate drying of PVC powder in a pneumatic dryer. In this model, a two-phase continuum model was used to describe the steady-state flow of a dilute dispersed phase (wet PVC powder) and a continuous phase (humid air) through dryer. The particle scale kinetics was obtained by immersion of a fixed mass of wet PVC’s particles (cake) in a batch dense fluidized bed containing inert hot particles (glass bead). The drying kinetics was described by a shrinking core type model and integrated in pneumatic dryer model. The results show that the inlet temperature is the most important parameter
in the operation. The drying rate is controlled by a two-stage process. The first stage corresponds to the surface water evaporation, and the second to the pore water evaporation
Microdialect and Group Signature in the Song of the Skylark Alauda arvensis
The Skylark Alauda arvensis is a territorial species of open landscape in which pairs settle in stable and adjacent territories during the breeding season. Due to the heterogeneity of the habitat, territories are gathered in patches spaced by a few kilometres, in which each male produces very long and complex flight songs as a part of the territorial behaviour. We showed that, in a given patch, all the males (neighbours) share some particular sequences of syllables in their songs, whereas males settled in different patches (strangers) have almost no sequences in common. Such a phenomenon is known as microdialect. To test the hypothesis that these shared sequences support a group signature, we made playback experiments with ‘‘chimeric’’ signals: songs of strangers where the sequences shared by neighbours were artificially inserted. Behavioural responses to playbacks indicated a neighbour-stranger discrimination consistent with the dear enemy phenomenon, i.e. a reduced aggression toward neighbours compared to strangers. Furthermore, the same level of responses, observed when a ‘‘chimeric’’ song and a neighbour song were broadcast, indicated that shared sequences are recognized and identified as markers of the neighbourhood identity
A Robust Linguistic Platform for Efficient and Domain specific Web Content Analysis
Web semantic access in specific domains calls for specialized search engines
with enhanced semantic querying and indexing capacities, which pertain both to
information retrieval (IR) and to information extraction (IE). A rich
linguistic analysis is required either to identify the relevant semantic units
to index and weight them according to linguistic specific statistical
distribution, or as the basis of an information extraction process. Recent
developments make Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques reliable enough
to process large collections of documents and to enrich them with semantic
annotations. This paper focuses on the design and the development of a text
processing platform, Ogmios, which has been developed in the ALVIS project. The
Ogmios platform exploits existing NLP modules and resources, which may be tuned
to specific domains and produces linguistically annotated documents. We show
how the three constraints of genericity, domain semantic awareness and
performance can be handled all together
Durtal – La Motte-Crouillon
Direct and Inverse Results on Bounded Domains for Meshless Methods via Localized Bases on Manifolds
This article develops direct and inverse estimates for certain finite
dimensional spaces arising in kernel approximation. Both the direct and inverse
estimates are based on approximation spaces spanned by local Lagrange functions
which are spatially highly localized. The construction of such functions is
computationally efficient and generalizes the construction given by the authors
for restricted surface splines on . The kernels for which the
theory applies includes the Sobolev-Mat\'ern kernels for closed, compact,
connected, Riemannian manifolds.Comment: 29 pages. To appear in Festschrift for the 80th Birthday of Ian Sloa
