    Geometric Exponents of Dilute Logarithmic Minimal Models

    The fractal dimensions of the hull, the external perimeter and of the red bonds are measured through Monte Carlo simulations for dilute minimal models, and compared with predictions from conformal field theory and SLE methods. The dilute models used are those first introduced by Nienhuis. Their loop fugacity is beta = -2cos(pi/barkappa}) where the parameter barkappa is linked to their description through conformal loop ensembles. It is also linked to conformal field theories through their central charges c = 13 - 6(barkappa + barkappa^{-1}) and, for the minimal models of interest here, barkappa = p/p' where p and p' are two coprime integers. The geometric exponents of the hull and external perimeter are studied for the pairs (p,p') = (1,1), (2,3), (3,4), (4,5), (5,6), (5,7), and that of the red bonds for (p,p') = (3,4). Monte Carlo upgrades are proposed for these models as well as several techniques to improve their speeds. The measured fractal dimensions are obtained by extrapolation on the lattice size H,V -> infinity. The extrapolating curves have large slopes; despite these, the measured dimensions coincide with theoretical predictions up to three or four digits. In some cases, the theoretical values lie slightly outside the confidence intervals; explanations of these small discrepancies are proposed.Comment: 41 pages, 32 figures, added reference

    International audienceUnlike traditional valuation methods, viability theory provides tools for eradicating the risk, by determining the minimum initial capital that would meet the commitments of the investor, regardless market developments. In this study, we compare two approaches to risk assessment within a framework of asset-liability management (ALM) of a guaranteed fund. The optimal allocation of assets for such funds is determined initially by the classical portfolio insurance (thus with a statistical evaluation of risk) and then in a second step, by tools of viability theory. Although the results from the two approaches are not strictly comparable in terms of numerical point of view (as in both cases the goals are different in nature), this study offers, on a practical example of ALM management, two radically different philosophies: one is the statistical evaluation of risk, based on probabilistic models, while the other one eradicates risk, using viability theory

    The management of hepatobiliary cystadenomas: lessons learned

    AbstractBackgroundMucinous cystic neoplasms of the liver (hepatobiliary cystadenomas) are rare neoplastic lesions. Such cysts are often incorrectly diagnosed and managed, and carry a risk of malignancy. The objective of this study was to review the surgical experience with these lesions over 15 years.MethodsA retrospective chart review identified consecutive patients undergoing surgery for liver cystadenomas from 1997–2011. Clinical data were collected and summarized.ResultsThirteen patients (mean age 51 years, 12/13 females) with cysts 4.6–18.1cm were identified. Most cysts were located in the left lobe/centrally (11/12) and had septations (8/13). Mural nodularity was infrequent (3/13). Nine patients had liver resection/enucleation, whereas four had unroofing. Frozen section analysis had a high false‐negative rate (4/6). All patients had cystadenomas, of which two had foci of invasive carcinoma (cystadenocarcinoma) within mural nodules. There was no 90‐day mortality. All but one patient (myocardial infarction) were alive at a median follow‐up of 23.1 months. No patient with unroofing has developed malignancy to date.ConclusionsNon‐invasive hepatobiliary cystadenomas present as large central/left‐sided cysts in young or middle‐aged women. Associated malignancy was relatively uncommon and found within mural nodules. Intra‐operative frozen section analysis was ineffective at ruling out cystadenomas. Complete excision is recommended, but close follow‐up might be considered in patients with a prohibitive technical or medical risk, in the absence of nodularity on high‐quality imaging

    Phenotypic Insecticide Resistance in Anopheles gambiae (Diptera: Culicidae): Specific Characterization of Underlying Resistance Mechanisms Still Matters

    An effective control of malaria vectors requires an extensive knowledge of mechanisms underlying the resistance-phenotypes developed by these vectors against insecticides. We investigated Anopheles gambiae mosquitoes from Benin and Togo for their intensity of insecticide resistance and we discussed the involvement of genotyped mechanisms in the resistance-phenotypes observed. Three- to five-day-old adult mosquitoes emerged from field and laboratory An. gambiae larvae were assayed using WHO tube intensity tests against various doses of deltamethrin: 1× (0.05%); 2× (0.1%); 5× (0.25%); 7.5× (0.375%) and those of pirimiphos-methyl: 0.5× (0.125%); 1× (0.25%). Members of An. gambiae complex were screened in field populations using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays. The presence of kdrR(1014F/1014S) and ace-1R(119S) mutations was also investigated using TaqMan and PCR-RFLP techniques, respectively. Anopheles gambiae from field were very resistant to deltamethrin, whereas KisKdr and AcerKdrKis strains displayed 100% mortality rates at 2× the diagnostic dose. In contrast, the field mosquitoes displayed a low resistance-intensity against 1× the diagnostic dose of pirimiphos-methyl, whereas AcerKis and AcerKdrKis strains showed susceptibility at 0.5× the diagnostic dose. Anopheles gambiae s.s., Anopheles coluzzii, and Anopheles arabiensis were identified. Allelic frequencies of kdrR (1014F) and ace-1R (119S) mutations in the field populations varied from 0.65 to 1 and 0 to 0.84, respectively. The field An. gambiae displayed high-resistance levels against deltamethrin and pirimiphos-methyl when compared with those of the laboratory An. gambiae-resistant strains. These results exhibit the complexity of underlying insecticide resistance mechanisms in these field malaria vectors

    Can we quickly and thoroughly assess pain with the PACSLAC-II? : a convergent validity study in long-term care residents suffering from dementia.

    Abstract : A previous study found that the modified version of the Pain Assessment Checklist for Seniors with Limited Ability to Communicate (PACSLAC-II) is a valid tool to assess pain in elderly individuals suffering from dementia and who are unable to communicate verbally. The primary objective of this study was to confirm the convergent validity of the PACSLAC-II using direct evaluation of long-term care residents in real-life situations, using two other well-validated pain assessment scales (i.e., PACSLAC and Pain Assessment in Advanced Dementia [PAINAD]). A secondary objective was to document and compare the time required to complete and score each assessment scale. During two potentially painful procedures (i.e., transfer/mobilization), 46 long-term care residents (mean age = 83 ± 10 years) suffering from dementia were observed by three independent evaluators, each using one of the assessment scales (randomly assigned). Correlational analyses and analysis of variance were used to evaluate the association between each scale and to compare scoring time. The PACSLAC (r = 0.61) and the PAINAD (r = 0.65) were both moderately associated with the PACSLAC-II (all p values < .001). The PAINAD's average scoring time (63 ± 19 seconds) was lower than the PACSLAC-II's (96 ± 2 seconds), which was lower than the PACSLAC's (135 ± 53 seconds) (all p values < .001). These results suggest that the PACSLAC-II is a valid tool for assessing pain in individuals with dementia. The time required to complete and score the PACSLAC-II was reasonable, supporting its usefulness in clinical settings

    Grafted Human Embryonic Progenitors Expressing Neurogenin-2 Stimulate Axonal Sprouting and Improve Motor Recovery after Severe Spinal Cord Injury

    7 p.Background: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a widely spread pathology with currently no effective treatment for any symptom. Regenerative medicine through cell transplantation is a very attractive strategy and may be used in different non-exclusive ways to promote functional recovery. We investigated functional and structural outcomes after grafting human embryonic neural progenitors (hENPs) in spinal cord-lesioned rats.Methods and Principal Findings: With the objective of translation to clinics we have chosen a paradigm of delayed grafting, i.e., one week after lesion, in a severe model of spinal cord compression in adult rats. hENPs were either naive or engineered to express Neurogenin 2 (Ngn2). Moreover, we have compared integrating and non-integrating lentiviral vectors, since the latter present reduced risks of insertional mutagenesis. We show that transplantation of hENPs transduced to express Ngn2 fully restore weight support and improve functional motor recovery after severe spinal cord compression at thoracic level. This was correlated with partial restoration of serotonin innervations at lumbar level, and translocation of 5HT1A receptors to the plasma membrane of motoneurons. Since hENPs were not detectable 4 weeks after grafting, transitory expression of Ngn2 appears sufficient to achieve motor recovery and to permit axonal regeneration. Importantly, we also demonstrate that transplantation of naive hENPs is detrimental to functional recovery.Conclusions and Significance: Transplantation and short-term survival of Ngn2-expressing hENPs restore weight support after SCI and partially restore serotonin fibers density and 5HT1A receptor pattern caudal to the lesion. Moreover, grafting of naive-hENPs was found to worsen the outcome versus injured only animals, thus pointing to the possible detrimental effect of stem cell-based therapy per se in SCI.
