Strong spin-dependent negative differential resistance in composite graphene superlattices

    Get PDF
We find clear signatures of spin-dependent negative differential resistance in compound systems comprising a graphene nanoribbon and a set of ferromagnetic insulator strips deposited on top of it. The periodic array of ferromagnetic strips induces a proximity exchange splitting of the electronic states in graphene, resulting in the appearance of a superlattice with a spin-dependent energy spectrum. The electric current through the device can be highly polarized and both the current and its polarization manifest nonmonotonic dependence on the bias voltage. The device operates therefore as an Esaki spin diode, which opens possibilities to design new spintronic circuits

Systemic Design for a sustainable local economic development: Lea-Artibai case study

[EN] The Systemic Design approach provides a methodology to define complex territorial network of companies with reduced environmental impact. This method defines a way of analysis to understand and map the complexity of current issues addressing them at different levels, in order to design appropriate and long lasting solutions mainly based on the increase of relations between the involved actors. The creation of a network of connections permits to obtain several positive outcomes that involve both the territory and the society that lives in it and it also makes the system more resilient. An holistic diagnosis is the starting point for the identification of different areas to develop a systemic project. This methodology was applied to Lea-Artibai, a department of the Basque Country. Its economy is historically based on forestry and fishing that are currently facing a long-lasting crisis and it is difficult to intervene in these sectors for the complexity of the regulatory system. The holistic diagnosis highlighted other territorial potentialities of the area, mainly the agri-food sector (with traditional products and dishes) and the deeply rooted culture of cooperation. As a kick-off for the creation of the net between the different actors of the department was chosen the creation of a 'Systemic Buying Group (SBG)'. It enables to start the cooperation between the partners for the success of the pilot project: a large cooperative with its employees as potential clients, a cooperative of local producers and transformers, a little shop working as the bridge of communication between them. At their side operate AZARO Fundazioa (a private non–profit centre for entrepreneurship and innovation that promotes the creation of new businesses and the competitive improvement of the business network) as the coordinator of the project and the Systemic Design Group of Politecnico di Torino in the role of project leader. The project underlines the role of design as a deeply interdisciplinary field of work that is able to talk and cooperate with different disciplines to reach a collective goal: the environmental, social and economic sustainability. The SBG becomes the driver of change for the enhancement of the territory and the implementation of systemic design in the area, for an economy based on the quality instead of the quantity. A concrete action that acts on a small scale permits to manage the transition from the design of intangible to tangible.Battistoni, C.; Pallaro, A.; Arrizabalaga Arambarri, L. (2016). A new compilation of stomach content data for commercially-important pelagic fish species in the Northeast Atlantic

There is increasing demand for information on predator–prey interactions in the ocean as a result of legislative commitments aimed at achieving sustainable exploitation. However, comprehensive data sets are lacking for many fish species and this has hampered development of multispecies fisheries models and the formulation of effective food-web indicators. This work describes a new compilation of stomach content data for five pelagic fish species (herring, blue whiting, mackerel, albacore and bluefin tuna) sampled across the northeast Atlantic and submitted to the PANGAEA open-access data portal (www.pangaea.de). We provide detailed descriptions of sample origin and of the corresponding database structures. We describe the main results in terms of diet composition and predator–prey relationships. The feeding preferences of small pelagic fish (herring, blue whiting, mackerel) were sampled over a very broad geographic area within the North Atlantic basin, from Greenland in the west, to the Lofoten Islands in the east and from the Bay of Biscay northwards to the Arctic. This analysis revealed significant differences in the prey items selected in different parts of the region at different times of year. Tunas (albacore and bluefin) were sampled in the Bay of Biscay and Celtic Sea. Dominant prey items for these species varied by location, year and season. This data compilation exercise represents one of the largest and most wide-ranging ever attempted for pelagic fish in the North Atlantic. The earliest data included in the database were collected in 1864, whereas the most recent were collected in 2012. Data sets are available at doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.820041 and doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.826992

Experimentally Generating Any Desired Partially Coherent Schell-model Source Using Phase-only Control

    Get PDF
A technique is presented to produce any desired partially coherent Schell-model source using a single phase-only liquid-crystal spatial light modulator (SLM). Existing methods use SLMs in combination with amplitude filters to manipulate the phase and amplitude of an initially coherent source. The technique presented here controls both the phase and amplitude using a single SLM, thereby making the amplitude filters unnecessary. This simplifies the optical setup and significantly increases the utility and flexibility of the resulting system. The analytical development of the technique is presented and discussed. To validate the proposed approach, experimental results of three partially coherent Schell-model sources are presented and analyzed. A brief discussion of possible applications is provided in closing
