    La formación de equipos directivos e-competentes y el fomento de las nuevas tecnologías en la universidad / Training e-competentmanagerial teams and fostering the use of new technology at the university

    La investigación se desarrolló con el objetivo de valorar la estrategia de intervención diseñada con vista a potenciar la formación de equipos directivos “e-competentes” para dirigir el proceso de integración de los entornos virtuales de aprendizaje al proceso formativo en las Facultades de Cultura Física y Ciencias Agropecuarias de la Universidad de Camagüey. Se utilizaron métodos empíricos para conocer la visión de directivos y profesores sobre el proceso de integración de las tecnologías y métodos teóricos para conocer el estado de las investigaciones respecto al tema estudiado, así como para interpretar los resultados encontrados. La estrategia aplicada estuvo conformada por tres etapas y cinco direcciones. La aplicación de la estrategia arrojó resultados positivos en la Facultad de Cultura Física y fracasó en la otra Facultad. En el presente trabajo se analizan los resultados alcanzados en cada una de las Facultades. El estudio confirmo que el éxito en la introducción del aprendizaje apoyado en las TIC está directamente relacionado con el liderazgo e-competente. Igualmente se concluye que las limitantes pedagógicas, tecnológicas y organizacionales de la Universidad para integrar las TIC a los procesos sustantivos que desarrolla pudieran encontrar un paliativo en el desarrollo de equipos directivos e-competentes en cada una de sus facultades.ABSTRACTThe research aims at assessing a strategy devised to enhance "e-competent" team managers’ training for introducing virtual learning environments techniques into the process of professional education at the faculties of Sports and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Camagüey. The use of empirical methods reveals managers and professors’ viewpoints on ICT-supported learning strategies, together with a study of the state of the art. The devised strategy includes three stage and five areas (technological, pedagogical, organizational, teacher developmental and student developmental). The strategy yields positive outcomes at the Faculty of Sport but fails at the other faculty. This paper describes such outcomes in each faculty. The study confirms that the successful outcomes of ICT-supported learning are directly related to team managers’ pedagogical, organizational, and technological competence. Likewise, the university staff pedagogical, technological, and organizational shortcomings in integrating ICT into the substantive process might significantly be reduced by developing managers’ pedagogical, organizational and technological leadership

    Recomendaciones para el diseño de cursos virtuales en las modalidades semipresencial y a distancia utilizando la plataforma Moodle

    Objective: The paper aims at providing guidelines for designing online courses using the Moodle platform in the blended and distance educational modalities. Methods: The authors rely on theoretical methods such as analytical-synthetic, inductive-deductive and the rise from the abstract to the concrete in documentary review, and in the examination of Moodle platform supported courses. Result: Based on the analysis and remodeling of documents ruling virtual courses design, a set of guidelines is devised for blended and distance modalities.Conclusion: The authors arrived at the conclusion that by making available information about   virtual course design characteristics features in the blended and distance modality, teachers’ performance in the virtual environment will be favored. The guidelines offered do not hindir their creative capacity.Objetivo: El artículo ofrece recomendaciones metodológicas para el diseño de cursos virtuales utilizando la plataforma Moodle en las modalidades educativas semipresencial y a distancia. Métodos: Se emplearon métodos teóricos como el analítico-sintético, inductivo-deductivo y ascenso de lo abstracto a lo concreto, que permitieron, a partir de la revisión documental, y de la observación y análisis de cursos soportados en la plataforma Moodle concretar un grupo de indicaciones metodológicas. Resultado: A partir del análisis y adecuación de documentos que norman el diseño de cursos virtuales se ofrecen recomendaciones para realizar el diseño de los mismos en las modalidades semipresencial y a distancia. Conclusión: Se concluye que al poner a disposición de los docentes un material que aborde los aspectos metodológicos que deben regir el diseño de cursos virtuales en la modalidad semipresencial y distancia se favorecerá el desempeño de los mismos en el entorno virtual. Las recomendaciones que se ofrecen no limitan la capacidad creadora de los docentes

    Reduced current density and surface expression of a CLCN1 mutation causing dominant or recessive myotonia in Costa Rica

    Mutations in CLCN1 coding for the muscle ClC-1 Cl- channel lead to dominant (Thomsen's disease) of recessive (Becker's disease) myotonia. Here we characterized several CLCN1 mutations identified in Costa Rica myotonia patients: Q412P (Morales 2008. RevBiolTrop 56:1), R105C, Q154R, and F167L (R105C and F167L have been described earlier in German families (Meyer-Kleine 1995. AmJHumGenet57:1325, Zhang 2000. Neurology54:937). In different families, the Q412P mutation was found to be inherited both in recessive and dominant fashion. We studied the Cl- currents generated by these mutants in Xenopus oocytes using electrophysiological techniques, and for the Q412P mutant also surface membrane expression. Assaying for fast and common gating properties and single channel conductance, we found that none of the mutations exhibited significant alterations of gating parameters or conductance. In fact, mutations R105C, Q154R, and F167L were indistinguishable from WT ClC-1 (in agreement with earlier studies for R105C and F167L (Desaphy 2013, ExpNeurol 248:530). However, mutation Q412P displayed a dramatically reduced current density and a reduced surface expression. However, mimicking the heterozygous status of patients by co-injecting WT and mutant RNA in a 1:1 ratio did not reveal a significant reduction of current density compared to the injection of the half amount of WT. Our results indicate that Q412P does not exert a dominant negative effect on WT and that the pathophysiology of the R105C, Q154R, and F167L mutations is not due to reduced open probability or single channel current, but that these mutations must affect mechanisms that are not well reproduced in a non-skeletal muscle expression systems.     Abscisic acid mimic-fluorine derivative 4 alleviates water deficit stress by regulating ABA-responsive genes, proline accumulation, CO2 assimilation, water use efficiency and better nutrient uptake in tomato plants

    Water deficit represents a serious limitation for agriculture and both genetic and chemical approaches are being used to cope with this stress and maintain plant yield. Next-generation agrochemicals that control stomatal aperture are promising for controlling water use efficiency. For example, chemical control of abscisic acid (ABA) signaling through ABA-receptor agonists is a powerful method to activate plant adaptation to water deficit. Such agonists are molecules able to bind and activate ABA receptors and, although their development has experienced significant advances in the last decade, few translational studies have been performed in crops. Here, we describe protection by the ABA mimic-fluorine derivative 4 (AMF4) agonist of the vegetative growth in tomato plants subjected to water restriction. Photosynthesis in mock-treated plants is markedly impaired under water deficit conditions, whereas AMF4 treatment notably improves CO2 assimilation, the relative plant water content and growth. As expected for an antitranspirant molecule, AMF4 treatment diminishes stomatal conductance and transpiration in the first phase of the experiment; however, when photosynthesis declines in mock-treated plants as stress persists, higher photosynthetic and transpiration parameters are recorded in agonist-treated plants. Additionally, AMF4 increases proline levels over those achieved in mock-treated plants in response to water deficit. Thus water deficit and AMF4 cooperate to upregulate P5CS1 through both ABA-independent and ABA-dependent pathways, and therefore, higher proline levels are produced Finally, analysis of macronutrients reveals higher levels of Ca, K and Mg in AMF4- compared to mock-treated plants subjected to water deficit. Overall, these physiological analyses reveal a protective effect of AMF4 over photosynthesis under water deficit and enhanced water use efficiency after agonist treatment. In summary, AMF4 treatment is a promising approach for farmers to protect the vegetative growth of tomatoes under water deficit stress

    Design and Calibration of an Organic Diffusive Probe to Extend the Diffusion Gradient Technique to Organic Pollutants

    The objective of this study was to develop a method for measuring the mobility of persistent organic pollutants in the solid phase of soils within the context of environmental pollution risk assessment. A new diffusive probe, purposely designed by adapting the diffusive gradient technique method, measures labile organic species by immobilizing them after diffusion through a thin deionized water layer. The measure of the mass accumulated is used to calculate the flow of pollutant from solid phase to pore water. Naphthalene was chosen as a model persistent organic pollutant. The probe was calibrated at different temperatures and was then tested in several microcosms at different porosity and reactivities with naphthalene (one clay soil, two sandy soils and one natural soil). The probe response showed good agreement with the expected different abilities of the solid phases in restoring the solution phase. The concentration of naphthalene in the pore water was well buffered by rapid equilibria with the solid phase in the investigated natural soil. In contrast, pore water concentration in the sandy soils decreased rapidly and the flow was slackened, especially for the sandy soil with finer particles. In clay, only a fraction of the total naphthalene content was present in the labile fraction, while the remaining was tightly bound and was not released to the pore water. Therefore, this first stage of testing points out that the diffusive gradient technique, if optimized, can properly quantify the mobility of organic pollutants in soil

    Spatio-temporal distribution of pyrethroids in soil in Mediterranean paddy fields

    [EN] The demand of rice by the increase in population in many countries has intensified the application of pesticides and the use of poor quality water to irrigate fields. The terrestrial environment is one compartment affected by these situations, where soil is working as a reservoir, retaining organic pollutants. Therefore, it is necessary to develop methods to determine insecticides in soil and monitor susceptible areas to be contaminated, applying adequate techniques to remediate them. Materials and methods This study investigates the occurrence of ten pyrethroid insecticides (PYs) and its spatio-temporal variance in soil at two different depths collected in two periods (before plow and during rice production), in a paddy field area located in the Mediterranean coast. Pyrethroids were quantified using gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC MS) after ultrasound-assisted extraction with ethyl acetate. The results obtained were assessed statistically using non-parametric methods, and significant statistical differences (p&#8201;<&#8201;0.05) in pyrethroids content with soil depth and proximity to wastewater treatment plants were evaluated. Moreover, a geographic information system (GIS) was used to monitor the occurrence of PYs in paddy fields and detect risk areas. Results and discussion Pyrethroids were detected at concentrations &#8804;57.0 ng g&#8722;1 before plow and &#8804;62.3 ng g&#8722;1 during rice production, being resmethrin and cyfluthrin the compounds found at higher concentrations in soil. Pyrethroids were detected mainly at the top soil, and a GIS program was used to depict the obtained results, showing that effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were the main sources of soil contamination. No toxic effects were expected to soil organisms, but it is of concern that PYs may affect aquatic organisms, which represents the worst case scenario. Conclusions A methodology to determine pyrethroids in soil was developed to monitor a paddy field area. The use of water from WWTPs to irrigate rice fields is one of the main pollution sources of pyrethroids. It is a matter of concern that PYs may present toxic effects on aquatic organisms, as they can be desorbed from soil.     Novel magnetite nanoparticles coated with waste sourced bio- based substances as sustainable and renewable adsorbing materials

    This study examines the possibility of using bio-based product isolated from urban solid wastes as a material for environmental technological applications. To this end, Fe3O4 nanoparticles coated with different amounts of soluble bio-based products (SBO) were synthesized as low-cost nanoadsorbent for the removal of pollutants in wastewater. Particles of 10 nm diameter with Fe3O4 core and SBO shell were obtained. The concentration of SBO employed in the synthesis had no effect on the size and structure of the NPs, but ruled the pHPZC and aggregation of the nanoparticles in water. The cationic dye crystal violet (CV) was used as a model pollutant to test the adsorption capacity of the nanoparticles. The results indicated that both the medium pH and NP dosage were significant parameters to enhance the removal of CV. The results contribute to the studies which show how wastes can become a source of revenue through the industrial exploitation of their chemical value.Fil: Magnacca, Giuliana.     Development and Validation of Hepamet Fibrosis Scoring System-a Simple, Non-invasive Test to Identify Patients With Nonalcoholic Fatty liver Disease With Advanced Fibrosis

    BACKGROUND &amp; AIMS: Fibrosis affects prognoses for patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Several non-invasive scoring systems have aimed to identify patients at risk for advanced fibrosis, but inconclusive results and variations in features of patients (diabetes, obesity and older age) reduce their diagnostic accuracy. We sought to develop a scoring system based on serum markers to identify patients with NAFLD at risk for advanced fibrosis. METHODS: We collected data from 2452 patients with NAFLD at medical centers in Italy, France, Cuba, and China. We developed the Hepamet fibrosis scoring system using demographic, anthropometric, and laboratory test data, collected at time of liver biopsy, from a training cohort of patients from Spain (n=768) and validated the system using patients from Cuba (n=344), Italy (n=288), France (n=830), and China (n=232). Hepamet fibrosis score (HFS) were compared with those of previously developed fibrosis scoring systems (the NAFLD fibrosis score [NFS] and FIB-4). The diagnostic accuracy of the Hepamet fibrosis scoring system was assessed based on area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curve, sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic odds ratio, and positive and negative predictive values and likelihood ratios. RESULTS: Variables used to determine HFS were patient sex, age, homeostatic model assessment score, presence of diabetes, levels of aspartate aminotransferase, and albumin, and platelet counts; these were independently associated with advanced fibrosis. HFS discriminated between patients with and without advanced fibrosis with an AUROC curve value of 0.85 whereas NFS or FIB-4 did so with AUROC values of 0.80 (P=.0001). In the validation set, cut-off HFS of 0.12 and 0.47 identified patients with and without advanced fibrosis with 97.2% specificity, 74% sensitivity, a 92% negative predictive value, a 76.3% positive predictive value, a 13.22 positive likelihood ratio, and a 0.31 negative likelihood ratio. HFS were not affected by patient age, body mass index, hypertransaminasemia, or diabetes. The Hepamet fibrosis scoring system had the greatest net benefit in identifying patients who should undergo liver biopsy analysis and led to significant improvements in reclassification, reducing the number of patients with undetermined results to 20% from 30% for the FIB-4 and NFS systems (P&lt;.05). CONCLUSIONS: Using clinical and laboratory data from patients with NAFLD, we developed and validated the Hepamet fibrosis scoring system, which identified patients with advanced fibrosis with greater accuracy than the FIB-4 and NFS systems. the Hepamet system provides a greater net benefit for the decision-making process to identify patients who should undergo liver biopsy analysis

    Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on TAVR Activity: A Worldwide Registry

    Background: The COVID-19 pandemic had a considerable impact on the provision of structural heart intervention worldwide. Our objectives were: 1) to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) activity globally; and 2) to determine the differences in the impact according to geographic region and the demographic, development, and economic status of diverse international health care systems. Methods: We developed a multinational registry of global TAVR activity and invited individual TAVR sites to submit TAVR implant data before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, the number of TAVR procedures performed monthly from January 2019 to December 2021 was collected. The adaptive measures to maintain TAVR activity by each site were recorded, as was a variety of indices relating to type of health care system and national economic indices. The primary subject of interest was the impact on TAVR activity during each of the pandemic waves (2020 and 2021) compared with the same period pre–COVID-19 (2019). Results: Data were received from 130 centers from 61 countries, with 14 subcontinents and 5 continents participating in the study. Overall, TAVR activity increased by 16.7% (2,337 procedures) between 2018 and 2019 (ie, before the pandemic), but between 2019 and 2020 (ie, first year of the pandemic), there was no significant growth (–0.1%; –10 procedures). In contrast, activity again increased by 18.9% (3,085 procedures) between 2020 and 2021 (ie, second year of the pandemic). During the first pandemic wave, there was a reduction of 18.9% (945 procedures) in TAVR activity among participating sites, while during the second and third waves, there was an increase of 6.7% (489 procedures) and 15.9% (1,042 procedures), respectively.
