    Alteraciones de la función pulmonar en los lactantes con bronquiolitis : valoración de la mecánica pulmonar y espiración parcial forzada con chaquetilla neumática

(2) describir y cuantificar las alteraciones de pruebas de funcion pulmonar producidas en los lactantes que sufren bronuiolitis en fase aguda y en la convalecencia. (3) comparar las distintas pruebas de funcion pulmonar en cuanto a su capacidad de diferenciar entre las situaciones normales y patológicas. Material y métodos: sujetos del estudio: (1) grupo control, con 44 lactantes sanos de 0,26 a 0,73 años decimales. (2) grupo bronquiolitis, 19 lactantes con bronquiolitis en fase aguda entre 0,18 y 0,89 años decimales. (3) grupo postbronquiolitis, 17 lactantes del grupo anterior entre 2 y 5 meses tras su bronquiolitis. Pruebas de funcion pulmonar y variables medidas: técnica de oclusión única teleinspiratoria (mide la distensibilidad y la resistencia total del sistema respiratorio, crs y rrs) y espiración parcial forzada con chaquetilla neumática (mide el flujo maximo a nivel de la capacidad residual funcional, vmaxfrc). Resultados: los valores normales de crs (7,50 +- 1,77 ml/cmh2o) no se correlacionaron con la talla, edad o peso. Los valores normales de la resistencia se correlacionaron con la edad: rrs = -53,4 e + 80,6, edad en años decimales, rrs en cmh2o/l.s). Los valores normales de vmaxfrc se correlacionaron con la talla: vmaxfrc = 6,8 t - 251,6 talla en cm y vmaxfrc en ml/s. Durante la fase aguda de la bronquiolitis hay una disminución de crs y de vmaxfrc, siendo esta ultima variable la mas afectada. Durante la convalecencia solo hay una disminución moderada de vmaxfrc.     Assessment of competences in designing online preparatory materials for the Cambridge First Certificate in English examination

    The implementation of the competence-based approach set out by the Bologna Declaration within the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) entails important changes in learning processes and brings new approaches to content teaching and learning, inevitably affecting planning, methodology and assessment (Cano García, 2008). Such is the case of the design and development of the First Certificate in English Online Course & Tester at the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (UPV) by the CAMILLE research group. These materials, published through InGenio1, are split into two parts: a preparatory course and a tester platform. This article explores some of the key competences to be included in these preparatory materials, taking into consideration the course and tester and their innovative features in terms of content, design and navigation, with a special focus on how they contribute to the adaptation to the new requirements specified by the Bologna Process. It also illustrates the ways in which these new requirements may influence how teachers and students use these materials when it comes to preparation for the FCE and addresses some important issues concerning competence-based learning and assessment and some of the strategies and tools which have been taken into consideration.     Flow regime effects over non-cavitating diesel injection nozzles

    [EN] The research conducted and explained in this paper aims to explore and understand the influence of flow regime (laminar, transition or turbulent) inside diesel injector nozzles. For this purpose, an experimental study based on mass flow rate and momentum flux measurements on three convergent nozzles has been carried out. The combination of both types of measurement has been helpful to obtain information about the nature of the flow and its consequences on important variables, such as injection effective velocity and effective area of nozzle outlet orifices.     Designing and Evaluating Online Language Learning Materials for Higher Education

    Nowadays, finding, choosing and developing or adapting materials is a very important component of education as well as a key element for the success of the whole learning process. A language teacher is also a materials developer and the materials development process should aim at ensuring that local needs and wants do not dictate decisions and that important learning principles are not forgotten. In the case of materials for Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL), a very thorough and pedagogically-sound set of guidelines should be followed prior to the design of the materials. Following that, a careful evaluation should take place so as to guarantee that those guidelines have been followed and that the materials are therefore valid, efficient and effective. This is especially important in the case of in-house CALL materials development. This paper describes the basis for the evaluation and validation of the In Genio FCE Online Course and Tester. These are two language learning in-house CALL materials for students of English, developed by the CAMILLE Research Group at the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (UPV) in Spain. A large part of the focus of this paper will be on the aspects concerning the evaluation of the two previously mentioned materials according to well-established frameworks and guidelines from the most relevant literature

    The design and integration of ESP content in an upper-intermediate online course

    [EN] Language instructors who adopt the role of materials writers in order to provide their students with more accurate tailor-made learning resources usually start by closely examining their learners needs and demands, as well as the distinctive features of the teaching context or situation in which those materials are going to be implemented. This idea is especially relevant when the linguistic resources are developed to be used by future engineers who access them to practice and learn a language that will have a dominant presence in their future working environment. This is a fact that encouraged the authors to design an online upper-intermediate level English course which incorporates relevant language resources directly linked to the disciplines and content covered by their students university undergraduate degrees. The course is known as the InGenio FCE Online Course & Tester (Universitat Politècnica de València, 2011). The article illustrates how language instructors try to explore and find new ways, methods, typologies of exercises, and techniques which might help them create, promote, and implement learning systems capable of fostering an integral communicative competence and make the entire learning process more dynamic and attractive. A specific case study dealing with students who seek to make the most of combining Computer-Assisted Language Learning and English for Specific Purposes is described and analysed here.     Refractometric sensor based on whispering-gallery modes of thin capillaries

    Whispering-gallery modes resonances of submicron wall thickness capillaries exhibit very large wavelength shifts as a function of the refractive index of the medium that fills the inside. The sensitivity to refractive index changes is larger than in other optical microcavities as microspheres, microdisks and microrings. The outer surface where total internal reflection takes place remains always in air, enabling the measure of refractive index values higher than the refractive index of the capillary material. The fabrication of capillaries with submicron wall thickness has required the development of a specific technique. A refractometer with a response higher than 390 nm per refractive index unit is demonstrated. These sensors are readily compatible with microfluidic systems

    A Novel Synthetic Route to Prepare High Surface Area Mayenite Catalyst for TCE Oxidation

    [EN] Mayenite (Ca12Al14O33) was synthesized by a novel route based on the use of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) as a soft templating agent. The material was tested for the total oxidation of trichloroethylene in the gas phase and the catalytic performance was analysed when using different initial amounts of PMMA in the catalyst synthesis. The results were compared with those obtained with a mayenite synthetized by a classical hydrothermal method. The highest activity in terms of TCE conversion was achieved in the presence of mayenite prepared using 10% w/w of PMMA; its activity was also higher than that of the hydrothermal mayenite.     The role of social and collaborative networks in the development of in-house multimedia language learning materials

    The development of in-house language learning materials has being going on for many decades. In the past, it was difficult for language teachers worldwide to share their in-house materials with other teachers, and so was having access to the materials developed by others. This often produced a feeling of isolation and, very frequently, provoked a duplication of efforts and a bigger investment of time. However, thanks to the Web 2.0 teachers and practitioners worldwide can communicate with each other and share experiences and materials. While this aspect of the so-called Social Web has being successfully exploded in the past few decades, especially in the case of online communities of teachers and practitioners worldwide, the possibilities of non-dedicated social and collaborative networks have not been so attentively looked. This paper describes the development of different language learning materials as well as some of the steps taken in order to get collaboration from users of two non-dedicated websites worldwide so as to increase the quality, authenticity and variety of those in-house language learning materials. The materials are part of the English online Course and Tester developed by the CAMILLE Research Group at the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), in Spain.
