    Reducing the energy demand in irrigation water supply systems. Experiences from southern Europe

    In recent years, many modernization processes have been undertaken in irrigation districts with a view to improving water use efficiency. In southern Spain, many irrigation districts have either been modernized or are currently being upgraded. However, as part of the modernization process some unexpected side effects have been observed. This paper analyzes the relative advantages and limitations of modernization based on field data collected in a typical Andalusian irrigation district. Although the amount of water diverted for irrigation to farms has been considerably reduced, consumptive use has increased. The costs for operation and system maintenance have dramatically risen (400%), as the energy for pumping water is much higher now compared to the gravity fed systems used previously. Then a regional analysis of the relationship between energy requirements and irrigation water applied in ten irrigation districts, in Southern Spain, has been carried out. Results show that 1000 kWh ha–1 is the energy required to apply an average depth of 2590 m3 ha-1. Finally, energy saving options are identified and discussed

    Cis- and trans-regulatory mechanisms of gene expression in the ASJ sensory neuron of Caenorhabditis elegans

The identity of a given cell type is determined by the expression of a set of genes sharing common cis-regulatory motifs and being regulated by shared transcription factors. Here, we identify cis and trans regulatory elements that drive gene expression in the bilateral sensory neuron ASJ, located in the head of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. For this purpose, we have dissected the promoters of the only two genes so far reported to be exclusively expressed in ASJ, trx-1 and ssu-1. We hereby identify the ASJ motif, a functional cis-regulatory bipartite promoter region composed of two individual 6 bp elements separated by a 3 bp linker. The first element is a 6 bp CG-rich sequence that presumably binds the Sp family member zinc-finger transcription factor SPTF-1. Interestingly, within the C. elegans nervous system SPTF-1 is also found to be expressed only in ASJ neurons where it regulates expression of other genes in these neurons and ASJ cell fate. The second element of the bipartite motif is a 6 bp AT-rich sequence that is predicted to potentially bind a transcription factor of the homeobox family. Together, our findings identify a specific promoter signature and SPTF-1 as a transcription factor that functions as a terminal selector gene to regulate gene expression in C. elegans ASJ sensory neurons.Some C. elegans strains were provided by the CGC, which is funded by the National Institutes of Health Office of Research Infrastructure Programs (P40 OD010440), and by the Japanese National Bioresource Project, which is funded by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport, Science and Technology.     Caracterización y posibilidades de reutilización en obras de infraestructura de los RCD's procedentes de la demolición de la prisión provincial de Córdoba

    Comunicación presentada al III Congreso de Ingeniería Civil, Territorio y Medio Ambiente, Zaragoza, 2006El presente trabajo ha permitido la caracterización de los residuos de construcción y demolición (RCD’s) procedentes del derribo de la cimentación de la antigua Prisión Provincial de Córdoba. Tras una trituración primaria y secundaria, los materiales son sometidos a una trituración con molino de impactos que reduce el material a granulometrías inferiores a 50 mm, posteriormente el material es transportado hasta una criba vibrante de dos tamices que permite obtener tres fracciones de árido reciclado: 0-10 mm, 10-40 mm y mayor de 40 mm. Para la identificación de cada una de las fracciones se han realizado ensayos en laboratorio de granulometría, plasticidad, contenido en materia orgánica, contenido en sales y yesos, hinchamiento y colapso. Para caracterizar su comportamiento se han realizado principalmente ensayos Proctor e índice C.B.R. Los resultados obtenidos han puesto de manifiesto su excelente comportamiento mecánico y su elevada capacidad de soporte, sin embargo de acuerdo con el contenido en sales solubles y yesos el material se clasifica como suelo tolerable según el Pliego de Prescripciones Técnicas Generales para Obras de Carreteras y Puentes (PG-3). El árido reciclado 10-40 mm no cumple las condiciones granulométricas para su utilización en rellenos tipo terraplén según el PG-3, y se propone continuar la investigación realizando mezclas a distintos porcentajes de las fracciones 0-10 mm y 10-40 mm

    Data on the oral health of the elderly depict a worrying situation, with an elevated prevalence of caries and moderate periodontal disease, frequent edentulism, and numerous cases of dry mouth and oral cancer. There is wide evidence that periodontitis is a risk factor for certain systemic diseases, and impaired oral health has been associated with mastication and nutritional problems, especially among the elderly, with highly negative effects on their quality of life. In this nonsystematic review, the authors discuss the importance of evaluating the oral health of the geriatric population in a comprehensive manner, beyond simple clinical assessments

    Middleware to Operate Smart Photovoltaic Irrigation Systems in Real Time

    Climate change, water scarcity and higher energy requirements and electric tariff compromises the continuity of the irrigated agriculture. Precision agriculture (PA) or renewable energy sources which are based on communication and information technologies and a large amount of data are key to ensuring this economic activity and guaranteeing food security at the global level. Several works which are based on the use of PA and renewable energy sources have been developed in order to optimize different variables of irrigated agriculture such as irrigation scheduling. However, the large amount of technologies and sensors that these models need to be implemented are still far from being easily accessible and usable by farmers. In this way, a middleware called Real time Smart Solar Irrigation Manager (RESSIM) has been developed in this work and implemented in MATLABTM with the aim to provide to farmers a user-friendly tool for the daily making decision process of irrigation scheduling using a smart photovoltaic irrigation management module. RESSIM middleware was successfully tested in a real field during a full irrigation season of olive trees using a real smart photovoltaic irrigation system

    Active core rewarming avoids bioelectrical impedance changes in postanesthetic patients

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Postoperative hypothermia is a common cause of complications in patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Hypothermia is known to elicit electrophysiological, biochemical, and cellular alterations thus leading to changes in the active and passive membrane properties. These changes might influence the bioelectrical impedance (BI). Our aim was to determine whether the BI depends on the core temperature.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We studied 60 patients (52 female and 8 male) age 40 to 80 years with an ASA I-II classification that had undergone laparoscopic cholecystectomy under balanced inhalation anesthesia. The experimental group (<it>n </it>= 30) received active core rewarming during the transanesthetic and postanesthesic periods. The control group (<it>n </it>= 30) received passive external rewarming. The BI was recorded by using a 4-contact electrode system to collect dual sets of measurements in the deltoid muscle. The body temperature, hemodynamic variables, respiratory rate, blood-gas levels, biochemical parameters, and shivering were also measured. The Mann-Whitney unpaired <it>t</it>-test was used to determine the differences in shivering between each group at each measurement period. Measurements of body temperature, hemodynamics variables, respiratory rate, and BI were analyzed using the two-way repeated-measures ANOVA.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The gradual decrease in the body temperature was followed by the BI increase over time. The highest BI values (95 ± 11 Ω) appeared when the lowest values of the temperature (35.5 ± 0.5°C) were reached. The active core rewarming kept the body temperature within the physiological range (over 36.5°C). This effect was accompanied by low stable values (68 ± 3 Ω) of BI. A significant decrease over time in the hemodynamic values, respiratory rate, and shivering was seen in the active core-rewarming group when compared with the controls. The temporal course of shivering was different from those of body temperatue and BI. The control patients showed a significant increase in the serum-potassium levels, which were not seen in the active-core rewarming group.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The BI analysis changed as a function of the changes of core temperature and independently of the shivering. In addition, our results support the beneficial use of active core rewarming to prevent accidental hypothermia.</p

    Algunos aspectos sobre sexualidad en adolescentes de una secundaria básica del municipio Jaruco

    Se realizó un estudio descriptivo transversal con el objetivo de identificar algunos aspectos de la sexualidad en 312 adolescentes de 12 a 15 años matriculados en la secundaria básica urbana “Capitán San Luis”, del municipio Jaruco, provincia Mayabeque, desde septiembre del 2008 hasta diciembre del 2008. La información se recogió mediante un cuestionario dirigido a los adolescentes, que daba salida a los objetivos propuestos. Se concluyó que predominaron los adolescentes de 12 y 14 años, el sexo masculino y los que opinaron tener pocos conocimientos sobre la sexualidad. El preservativo fue el método anticonceptivo más conocido y usado, siendo los amigos la vía más frecuente por la cual recibieron información. Predominaron los que refirieron tener relaciones sexuales, sobre todo el sexo masculino. La edad promedio de comienzo de las relaciones sexuales fue los 14 años. El 47,27% de las adolescentes con vida sexual activa tuvo amenorreas y en el 23,63% se confirmó un embarazo, predominando la regulación menstrual como conducta para evitar el nacimiento del producto de la concepción
