OBJECTIVE: Parkinson’s disease is characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms that impair patients’ gait performance, especially while performing dual/concurrent tasks. These deficits impair patients’ daily function, because dual-tasking is a crucial ability in terms of everyday living. The aim of this study was to systematically review the effects of dual task interventions on gait performance of patients with Parkinson’s disease. METHOD: Studies were retrieved from MEDLINE/PubMed, LILACS and SciELO. We used the PICOS strategy to determine eligibility criteria. The search strategy included an advanced search on the included databases, using the following search query: “Parkinson’s Disease” AND “Double Task” OR “Concurrent Tasks” OR “Gait” AND “Walk”. Study selection was carried out by two independent researchers and a third one was called when consensus was needed. RESULTS: A total of 188 articles were identified: 169 articles from Medline/PubMed, 10 articles in SciELO, 8 articles in LILACS and 1 item from manual searches. A total of 56 articles were analyzed regarding the eligibility and exclusion criteria based on full text. A final total of 7 studies were included in the systematic review. CONCLUSION: The different types of dual-task interventions reported (dance, sound stimuli, visual and somatosensory) were associated to improvements in several gait performance indicators of Parkinson’s disease patients, including gait speed, stride time and length, cadence and step length. External stimuli seem to play a critical role on specific training effects on dual-task gait performance.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Chronic effects of aerobic exercise on panic disorder: a systematic review of randomized and non-randomized trials

    Get PDF
In general, most studies have supported an association between the acute effects of exercise and a reduced state anxiety, but failed to completely explain the relationship between the chronic effect of exercise and anxiety traits. The aim of this study was to systematically review the literature regarding the chronic effect of exercise on symptoms associated with panic disorder. The studies were retrieved from a MEDLINE/PubMed, ISI Web of Knowledge and SciELO. We adopted PICOS’s strategy recommended to determine the eligibility criteria. The survey was conducted using an advanced search in the ISI Web of Science and MEDLINE / PubMed with MeSH terms and Entry Terms for the keywords “Panic Disorder” basis and “Exercise”. Boolean operators “AND” and “OR” were used separately or in combination. Two independent researchers performed the selection of studies; in case of disagreement they sought a consensus on the selection. A total of 265 articles were identified: 199 articles from PubMed/Medline, 63 articles from ISI Web of Science and 3 articles by manual searches. Thus, 31 articles were analyzed by the eligibility criteria and the exclusion criteria, a total of five studies included in the systematic review. The regular practice of aerobic exercise seems to be an appropriate intervention to promote improvements in the severity of anxiety symptoms in PD patients.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Cultivated plants may work as an educational tool, creating in humans a feeling of affection with nature, which may increase public’s support to conservation programs. However, most cultivated plants in Brazilian cities are exotics, reducing the role of street trees and gardens in environmental education. This study identified the plant species present in the open spaces of the rectory of Unifor. We recorded 93 species belonging to 41 families. Overall, 88% of the species were exotics and only 12% natives for the coastal region of CearĂĄ. Nowadays, there is a majority of exotic species beeing grown, whereas the natives are underused. It would be interesting to introduce more native plants in the gardens of the rectory, to allow people to know the native plants of the coastal region of CearĂĄ, so that the gardens of the area could be used as an instrument for environmental education.

Objectives: The aim of this prospective longitudinal study was to evaluate the relationships between anxiety, depression, and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in a sample of pre-university students submitted to a stressful event. Study design: 153 students from a pre-university course (82 females and 71 males between 16 and 31 years old) were given a survey about TMD symptoms and a survey about anxiety and depression scale at the beginning and the end of the preparatory course (August 2009-T1, and November 2009-T2). Results: Results were analyzed using a chi-square test and Odds Ratio (OR), significance level of ĂĄ = 0.05. Statistical significance were found to depression rates in students with TMD (16% on T1 and 26% on T2, p = 0.001) as well as in general sample (12% on T1 and 22% on T2, p = 0.009), anxiety and TMD symptoms presented constant rates in both periods. Increased risk of having TMD were found in participants with anxiety (OR 2.6 in T2 and 5.6 in T1) and depression (2.0 in T2 and 3.3 in T1), but only anxiety reach statistical significance in both periods. Conclusions: TMD symptoms were a fluctuating variable that exchange between some individuals of this study. Independently of the TMD, depression rates significant increased in the evaluated period. Finally, anxiety was the psychological symptom related to the increased risk of having TMD

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of CPA in muscle damage and oxidative stress induced by aerobic exercise. Participate in the study ten healthy young (24 ± 4 years), eutrophic (23.2 ± 1 kg/m2),VO2max = 44.9 ± 10 ml/kg/min, four women performed three aerobic exercise sessions lasting 50 minutes randomly supplemented with water (WAT), isolated carbohydrate (CHO) or carbohydrate associated with proteins and antioxidants (CPA) every 10 minutes of exercise. Blood samples were taken before, immediately and 24 hours after each exercise session for analysis markers of muscle damage creatine kinase (CK) and oxidative stress malondialdehyde (MDA). Blood glucose was measured before, during and after the exercise. After testing the data for normality and homogeneity through the Shapiro-Wilk and Levine tests, one-way ANOVA or two-way analyses were made to compare the initial and the answers to the experimental procedure respectively, or their corresponding non-parametric. CHO and CPA resulted in maintaining or increasing glucose, respectively, during exercise, whereas WAT resulted in glycemia reduction. CHO or CPA did not affect CK post exercise concentration. MDA values were very similar immediately after exercise between CHO and CPA, however occurred significant reduction from post exercice to 24 hours after exercise in CPA procedure (4.8 ± 1.8 to 2.5 ± 0.8, p <0,05), while CHO (5.1 ± 0.8 to 4.6 ± 0.9) and WAT (4.9 ± 0.9 to 5.1 ± 0.6) did not promotes the same phenomenon. This study revealed that carbohydrates associated with proteins and antioxidants have ergogenic effect by increasing blood glucose during a single bout of aerobic exercise and accelerate the restoration of oxidative stress
