How can young people on the frontiers of care contribute to evaluating the outcomes of a sustained activity programme?
Information management for high content live cell imaging.
BACKGROUND: High content live cell imaging experiments are able to track the cellular localisation of labelled proteins in multiple live cells over a time course. Experiments using high content live cell imaging will generate multiple large datasets that are often stored in an ad-hoc manner. This hinders identification of previously gathered data that may be relevant to current analyses. Whilst solutions exist for managing image data, they are primarily concerned with storage and retrieval of the images themselves and not the data derived from the images. There is therefore a requirement for an information management solution that facilitates the indexing of experimental metadata and results of high content live cell imaging experiments. RESULTS: We have designed and implemented a data model and information management solution for the data gathered through high content live cell imaging experiments. Many of the experiments to be stored measure the translocation of fluorescently labelled proteins from cytoplasm to nucleus in individual cells. The functionality of this database has been enhanced by the addition of an algorithm that automatically annotates results of these experiments with the timings of translocations and periods of any oscillatory translocations as they are uploaded to the repository. Testing has shown the algorithm to perform well with a variety of previously unseen data. CONCLUSION: Our repository is a fully functional example of how high throughput imaging data may be effectively indexed and managed to address the requirements of end users. By implementing the automated analysis of experimental results, we have provided a clear impetus for individuals to ensure that their data forms part of that which is stored in the repository. Although focused on imaging, the solution provided is sufficiently generic to be applied to other functional proteomics and genomics experiments. Phonics: A ‘subject’ or part of the bigger picture of reading? Views and practices of student teachers
Abstract
This paper explores the extent to which student teachers, in their final year of a 3-year undergraduate programme teach phonics as part of an holistic reading programme linked to reading for meaning and for pleasure. It reports the results of surveys, lesson observations and interviews with a sample of students studying at one university in the Northwest of England. Results reveal that student teachers, as opposed to their espoused views, do not always do this. Findings suggest the prevailing influence of school culture on the practices of student teachers and their emerging subject knowledge.
Thermal rearrangements of some hydroxamic acid derivatives
An historical survey of the thermolyses of hydroxamic acids and O-acylated hydroxamic acids is presented, and thermal rearrangements which proceed by [l,3 ]-sigmatropic and free radical shifts are reviewed, together with the phenomenon of chemically induced dynamic nuclear polarisation (CIDNP). N-Methyl hydroxamic acids are found to undergo, on distillation, a novel thermal rearrangement to the isomeric N-methyl-O-acylhydroxylamines, the thermodynamically less stable product. The rearrangement is shown to occur, at least in part, via an intermolecular mechanism involving formation of N-methylhydroxylamine and N-methyl-N,0-diacylhydroxylamine. Various O-thiocarbamoylated N-methyl hydroxamic acids are found to undergo, in solution, a thermal [l,3 ] rearrangement to the isomeric hydrosulphamine derivatives. This rearrangement, which is accompanied by appreciable fragmentation to the corresponding N-methyl amide, is shown to proceed largely via a pathway involving caged free radical pairs
A Relativist Conceptual Model for Assessing Multiple Stakeholders Perceived Needs
The poster presents a conceptual model for assessing need in multiple stakeholder groups. The model adopts a relativists position by identifying distinct stakeholder groups and investigates their shared reality through survey or interviews. Once assessed, the conceptual model can determine where views meet, diverge and be negotiated between groups

The Role of Eif6 in Skeletal Muscle Homeostasis Revealed by Endurance Training Co-expression Networks
Regular endurance training improves muscle oxidative capacity and reduces the risk of age-related disorders. Understanding the molecular networks underlying this phenomenon is crucial. Here, by exploiting the power of computational modeling, we show that endurance training induces profound changes in gene regulatory networks linking signaling and selective control of translation to energy metabolism and tissue remodeling. We discovered that knockdown of the mTOR-independent factor Eif6, which we predicted to be a key regulator of this process, affects mitochondrial respiration efficiency, ROS production, and exercise performance. Our work demonstrates the validity of a data-driven approach to understanding muscle homeostasis
Do we need more male primary teachers? Tensions and contradictions in the perspectives of male and female trainees.
Primary teaching ITT courses across the UK have been under pressure from central government, Ofsted and the media to recruit more male students to their courses with the aim of increasing the proportion of males in the primary teaching workforce. This is because increasing the number of male role models in primary schools has been mooted as the solution to boys’ underachievement, especially in reading and writing. There is, however, little evidence showing any correlation between boys’ educational outcomes and the number of male primary teachers in schools. The purpose of the project reported in this paper was to ascertain the beliefs of the future primary school workforce about this focus on the need for male role models in schools. A mixed methods approach was employed; 120 male and female primary trainees were surveyed and a further 48 took part in group interviews, all of whom were based in an Initial Teacher Training department in a university in North West England. Results indicated that although aspiring teachers felt that males and females could make equally good role models for children their personal value systems perpetuated the myth that boys need male role models to achieve better educational outcomes
