We present the 0.5 - 78 keV spectral analysis of 18 broad line AGN belonging to the INTEGRAL complete sample. Using simultaneous Swift-XRT and NuSTAR observations and employing a simple phenomenological model to fit the data, we measure with a good constraint the high energy cut-off in 13 sources, while we place lower limits on 5 objects. We found a mean high-energy cut-off of 111 keV (standard deviation = 45 keV) for the whole sample, in perfect agreement with what found in our previous work using non simultaneous observations and with what recently published using NuSTAR data. This work suggests that simultaneity of the observations in the soft and hard X-ray band is important but not always essential, especially if flux and spectral variability are properly accounted for. A lesser agreement is found when we compare our cut-off measurements with the ones obtained by Ricci et al. (2017) using Swift-BAT high energy data, finding that their values are systematically higher than ours. We have investigated whether a linear correlation exists between photon index and the cut-off and found a weak one, probably to be ascribed to the non perfect modelling of the soft part of the spectra, due to the poor statistical quality of the 2-10 keV X-ray data. No correlation is also found between the Eddington ratio and the cut-off, suggesting that only using high statistical quality broad-band spectra is it possible to verify the theoretical predictions and study the physical characteristics of the hot corona and its geometry.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Societ

Narrow Line Seyfert 1s in the IBISCO sample

We present the broad-band soft and hard X-ray spectral analysis of 8 Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies extracted from the IBISCO Sample. The study also focuses on the properties of the NLS1 in our sample in relation to those of the IBISCO parent Seyfert population. The IBISCO sample comprises 57 AGN selected from the INTEGRAL IBIS AGN catalogue (in the 20-100 keV band), with z<<0.05 and covering a wide range of luminosities, BH masses and absorption. All AGN have also measurements of the molecular gas (H2_2) content of their host galaxies, through the detection of CO emission lines. The main goals of this analysis are to accurately determine the X-ray continuum emission, investigate the presence of absorption features around 7 keV (indicative of the presence of outflows) and measure the bolometric luminosity in order to study the accretion parameters of the eight IBISCO NLS1, and study the accretion mechanisms and investigate the feeding and feedback cycle in these peculiar AGN. Preliminary results show that NLS1 tend to have higher Eddington ratios and larger molecular gas fractions than their parent Seyfert population in the IBISCO sample. Nuclear (AGN) vs. host galaxy properties scaling relations of NLS1 in relation to the parent Seyfert population are also explored.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, 1 table. Curarse en Salud: Mexican Curanderos in Mental Health

    Get PDF
Also known as traditional folk healers, Curanderos’ name stems from the word “curar” which means “to heal” in Spanish. Curanderismo is the practice and Curanderos are the practitioners. Prior research has found there are significant barriers Latinx communities face when seeking mental health care in the U.S. Reasons include institutional barriers such as language, citizenship, and socio-economic status and cultural barriers such as lack of cultural competency by practitioners. Because of the holistic healing nature Curanderismo emphasizes, extensive research has been conducted to understand why these marginalized communities seek Curanderos’ treatment. Culture and psychopathology have a significant relationship because psychiatric disorders can manifest differently across cultures. Curanderos can be used to bridge disparities for this community, because they have the cultural competency and understanding of complex paradoxes experienced by patients. Curanderismo does not look at different aspects of health individually but utilizes a holistic approach. The three main aspects of health are the mind (alma), body (cuerpo), and spirit (spiritu); the emotional, physical, spiritual, and mental health. Spirituality can play a huge role in a person’s cultural background; an aspect of health Curanderos understand extensively but often overlooked in psychology research. Curanderos are not an “alternative,” a term used mainly to describe this treatment, but as “the standard”. This proposed study is to comprehend the role it has for health within Mexican communities, specifically in the U.S. The proposed methodology chosen will be qualitative constructivist grounded theory (Charmaz, 2014). 20 participants; 5 Curanderos and 15 people who have been treated by Curanderos will be interviewed. Practitioners will be asked the same 9 questions. People who have been treated will have a different set of questions but will all be asked the same 9 individually in 1 hour interviews. At the end, conceptual development and theory construction will be created to answer the central aim question. I anticipate the opportunity to listen to multiple rich personal accounts from the participants, through CGT (Charmaz, 2014). This approach to data collection will help to understand what role Curanderismo plays in the mental health care for Mexican communities living in the U.S. Through my proposed study, it can open a conversation about using more qualitative methodologies in research of Curanderismo and emphasize culturally sensitive frameworks in treatment and diagnosis. Utilization of CGT (Charmaz, 2014) does not compare or measure effectiveness of Curanderismo to another medical practice but understands the impact it has on its own community by gaining rich personal accounts from people themselves

Flat-spectrum radio sources as likely counterparts of unidentified INTEGRAL sources (Research Note)

Many sources in the fourth INTEGRAL/IBIS catalogue are still unidentified, since they lack an optical counterpart. An important tool that can help in identifying/classifying these sources is the cross-correlation with radio catalogues, which are very sensitive and positionally accurate. Moreover, the radio properties of a source, such as the spectrum or morphology, could provide further insight into its nature. Flat-spectrum radio sources at high Galactic latitudes are likely to be AGN, possibly associated to a blazar or to the compact core of a radio galaxy. Here we present a small sample of 6 sources extracted from the fourth INTEGRAL/IBIS catalogue that are still unidentified/unclassified, but which are very likely associated with a bright, flat-spectrum radio object. To confirm the association and to study the source X-ray spectral parameters, we performed X-ray follow-up observations with Swift/XRT. We report the results obtained from this search and discuss the nature of each source. 5 of the 6 radio associations are also detected in X-rays; in 3 cases they are the only counterpart found. IGR J06073--0024 is a flat-spectrum radio quasar at z=1.08, IGR J14488--4008 is a newly discovered radio galaxy, while IGR J18129--0649 is an AGN of a still unknown type. The nature of IGR J07225--3810 and IGR J19386--4653 is less well defined, since in both cases we find another X-ray source in the INTEGRAL error circle; nevertheless, the flat-spectrum radio source, likely to be a radio loud AGN, remains a viable and more convincing association in both cases. Only for IGR J11544--7618 could we not find any convincing counterpart since the radio association is not an X-ray emitter.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication on Astronomy and Astrophysic

In this paper we report the discovery and detailed radio/X-ray analysis of a peculiar giant radio galaxy (GRG) detected by INTEGRAL, IGR J14488-4008. The source has been recently classified as a Seyfert 1.2 galaxy at redshift 0.123; the radio data denote the source to be a type II Fanaroff-Riley radio galaxy, with a linear projected size exceeding 1.5 Mpc, clearly assigning IGR J14488-4008 to the class of GRG. In the X-rays, the source shows a remarkable spectrum, characterised by absorption by ionised elements, a characteristic so far found in only other four broad line radio galaxies.Comment: 7 pages, 3 tables, 5 figures. We explore the effect of political competition on the local provision of public goods in three countries: Brazil, Colombia and Mexico from 1991 to 2010 using municipal data. These countries share characteristics that make a comparative analysis useful in understanding the role of governance structures, which include the degree of fiscal and political decentralization. Based on a multidimensional approach of political competition and bringing to the fore the role of congressional elections, we establish the effect of several measures of political competition based on lower chamber elections on indicators of primary education, sanitation and infant mortality. We find that Brazil displays the highest elasticity with expected signs in several public goods to most measures of political competition, while Mexico shows strong connection of political competition indicators to all public goods but negative effects of voter turnout and electoral volatility; Colombia is the least responsive except for infant mortality. These differences are attributed to influences stemming from local accountability and party discipline

Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina. This research aims to assess the effect of intemperism on physical and mechanical properties of bamboo stalks Guadua angustifolia Kunth, which came from a plantation located in La Florida, Cajamarca. The bamboo samples were subjected to intemperism for six months (June to December 2017) in the district of La Molina, province of Lima, Peru, placed at three exposure angles: 0, 45 and 90 degrees. During this period, physical properties such as moisture content and density were evaluated; additionally, color change tests were performed. At the end of the process, some mechanical properties like compression parallel to grain, bending and tension were compared before and after the exposure period. It was found that characteristics of bamboo were significantly affected by climatic conditions as: temperature, radiation and humidity at La Molina, Lima – Peru, therefore it was noticed variation in color properties, decreasing the modulus of elasticity (MOE) of compression parallel to grain and maximum resistance (RM) of tension. On the other hand, no variation was observed neither in the modulus of rupture (MOR) of bending nor the modulus of elasticity (MOE) after the intemperism period. Besides the maximum resistance (RM) of compression parallel to grain, showed no significant influence after the exposure period. Moreover, it can be inferred that middle area of the stem presented better behavior in terms of density and tension properties than basal area
