    E-Tailing and Internet-Related Real Estate Cost Savings: A Comparative Analysis of E-tailers and Retailers

    This article explores differences in the corporate real estate strategies of traditional retailers and those of electronic retailers, or e-tailers. The primary issue addressed is whether e-tailing companies realize benefits of their non-retail, online operations, specifically in the form of lower real estate-related expense ratios when compared to traditional brick-and-mortar retailers. The study reveals three trends. First, the majority of retailers studied continue to focus their corporate real estate strategies in the retail space world. However, some companies are incorporating their online operations into their real estate strategies and are beginning to see lower real estate-related costs as a result. Second, there are differences among e-tailers in their real estate strategies as well as some indication of differences in the real estate-related costs associated with the strategy chosen. Third, e-tailers are not realizing real estate-related cost savings over their retailing competitors.

    MicroRNA Expression in Human Airway Smooth Muscle Cells: Role of miR-25 in Regulation of Airway Smooth Muscle Phenotype

    Defining mechanisms by which differentiated, contractile smooth muscle cells become proliferative and secretory in response to mechanical and environmental stress is crucial for determining the contribution of airway smooth muscle (ASM) to inflammatory responses that result in airway disease. Regulation by microRNAs (miRNAs) has emerged as an important post-transcriptional mechanism regulating gene expression that may modulate ASM phenotype, but little is known about the expression and functions of miRNA in smooth muscle. In the present study we used microarrays to determine whether miRNAs in human ASM cells are altered by a proinflammatory stimulus. In ASM cells exposed to IL-1β, TNF-α, and IFN-γ, we found 11 miRNAs to be significantly down-regulated. We verified decreased expression of miR-25, miR-140*, mir-188, and miR-320 by quantitative PCR. Analysis of miR-25 expression indicates that it has a broad role in regulating ASM phenotype by modulating expression of inflammatory mediators such as RANTES, eotaxin, and TNF-α; genes involved in extracellular matrix turnover; and contractile proteins, most notably myosin heavy chain. miRNA binding algorithms predict that miR-25 targets Krüppel-like factor 4 (KLF4), a potent inhibitor of smooth muscle–specific gene expression and mediator of inflammation. Our study demonstrates that inhibition of miR-25 in cytokine-stimulated ASM cells up-regulates KLF4 expression via a post-transcriptional mechanism. This provides novel evidence that miR-25 targets KLF4 in ASM cells and proposes that miR-25 may be an important mediator of ASM phenotype

    The audiological health of horn players

    Among orchestral musicians, horn players are one of the most at-risk groups for noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). To investigate this group further, pure tone audiometry and a 14-item questionnaire were used to assess the hearing health, as well as attitudes and practices regarding hearing conservation, among 142 French horn players attending an international horn conference in Brisbane, Australia. Of this study's French horn players, 11.1% to 22.2%, and 17.7% to 32.9% of those aged 40years, showed some form of hearing loss (corrected for age and gender) typical of NIHL, using conservative versus lenient criteria, respectively. Stepwise multiple regression analyses showed no obvious predictor of hearing loss in this study's participants. Of the 18% of participants who reported using hearing protection, 81% used this protection sometimes and 50% used generic, foam, or other inferior forms of protection. Continued efforts to better manage the hearing health of horn players is warranted particularly as any hearing loss will affect a horn player's ability to perform and therefore his or her livelihood. Managing the hearing health of horn players will be challenging, however, with no simple predictor of NIHL loss being identified in this study's sample

    Aging, Depot Origin, and Preadipocyte Gene Expression

    Fat distribution changes with aging. Inherent changes in fat cell progenitors may contribute because fat cells turn over throughout life. To define mechanisms, gene expression was profiled in preadipocytes cultured from epididymal and perirenal depots of young and old rats. 8.4% of probe sets differed significantly between depots, particularly developmental genes. Only 0.02% differed with aging, despite using less stringent criteria than for comparing depots. Twenty-five genes selected based on fold change with aging were analyzed in preadipocytes from additional young, middle-aged, and old animals by polymerase chain reaction. Thirteen changed significantly with aging, 13 among depots, and 9 with both. Genes involved in inflammation, stress, and differentiation changed with aging, as occurs in fat tissue. Age-related changes were greater in perirenal than epididymal preadipocytes, consistent with larger declines in replication and adipogenesis in perirenal preadipocytes. Thus, age-related changes in preadipocyte gene expression differ among depots, potentially contributing to fat redistribution and dysfunction

    A roadmap for research on crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) to enhance sustainable food and bioenergy production in a hotter, drier world

    Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) is a specialized mode of photosynthesis that features nocturnal CO(2) uptake, facilitates increased water-use efficiency (WUE), and enables CAM plants to inhabit water-limited environments such as semi-arid deserts or seasonally dry forests. Human population growth and global climate change now present challenges for agricultural production systems to increase food, feed, forage, fiber, and fuel production. One approach to meet these challenges is to increase reliance on CAM crops, such as Agave and Opuntia, for biomass production on semi-arid, abandoned, marginal, or degraded agricultural lands. Major research efforts are now underway to assess the productivity of CAM crop species and to harness the WUE of CAM by engineering this pathway into existing food, feed, and bioenergy crops. An improved understanding of CAM has potential for high returns on research investment. To exploit the potential of CAM crops and CAM bioengineering, it will be necessary to elucidate the evolution, genomic features, and regulatory mechanisms of CAM. Field trials and predictive models will be required to assess the productivity of CAM crops, while new synthetic biology approaches need to be developed for CAM engineering. Infrastructure will be needed for CAM model systems, field trials, mutant collections, and data management

    Daily sleep quality affects drug craving, partially through indirect associations with positive affect, in patients in treatment for nonmedical use of prescription drugs

    OBJECTIVE: Sleep disturbance has been identified as a risk factor for relapse in addiction to a range of substances. The relationship between sleep quality and treatment outcome has received relatively little attention in research on nonmedical use of prescription drugs (NMUPD). This study examined the within-person association between sleep quality and craving in medically detoxified patients in residence for the treatment of NMUPD. METHOD: Participants (n= 68) provided daily reports of their sleep quality, negative affect (NA), positive affect (PA), and craving for an average of 9.36 (SD= 2.99) days. Within-person associations of sleep quality and craving were examined using multilevel modeling. Within-person mediation analyses were used to evaluate the mediating roles of NA and PA in the relationship between sleep quality and craving. RESULTS: Greater cravings were observed on days of lower than usual sleep quality (γ(10) = −0.10, p = .003). Thirty-one percent of the overall association between sleep quality and craving was explained by PA, such that poorer sleep quality was associated with lower PA and, in turn, lower PA was associated with greater craving. No evidence emerged for an indirect association between sleep quality and craving through NA. CONCLUSIONS: Daily fluctuations in sleep quality were associated with fluctuations in craving, an association partially explained by the association between sleep quality and daily PA. These data encourage further research on the relationship between sleep, affect, and craving in NMUPD patients, as well as in patients with other substance use disorders
